Having experienced my share of racial discrimination, representation in a video game is the least of my worries. When it comes to fiction, I want good characters, period, not somebody that is shoehorned for the sake of appeasing a specific race/ethnicity.

You people are throwing fits on both ends...this is a video game ..take your race debate somewhere else and quit throwing a fit.Nobody even made any good points on either side. The one who did the most talking just seemed like another person ranting on facebook...As a matter of fact im sure a lot of you guys trying to spark race debates on this forum get more attention here than you do on your facebook accounts.

Yeaaa at least if you rant on this forum people actually like your post and reply to it.

What are you so worried about ujustgotcaged? We are debating an off topic debate. Actually, its not totally off topic. Forums are about talking, debating, and even arguing. Its all just data and could go on forever, nothing is wasted.

There's a roster leak....go look at the MKX media thread...

I'm not going to debate with you about if it's okay to debate in a thread that's not even about debating lol

Tanya4eva You misunderstood my post, I said Bruce Lee is a JEET KUNE DO practitioner, those noises are made for that SPECIFIC FIGHTING STYLE, which Liu Kang also practices. Not stereotypical.

I just want to end it off with this: Diversity in media is good when utilized correctly. Say NRS creates a new franchise, has a completely diverse cast with different roles in it. Sure that's totally okay, and I'm assuming that's what they thought with Jax. However that completely went to shit with the whole rapper outfit, jive talk, and complete story irrelevance. THEY messed it up.

Now, some of you get the impression that some of us are completely against diversity in media. That is not the case in the slightest. What I am against is people rallying and crying that they feel "underrepresented" in a specific source of fiction, whether it be movie, video game, etc. First of all, who the hell are you to tell an artist what they may or may not put in their work? Secondly, if race, sexual orientation, whatever, has nothing to do with character's story, plot, development, relevance, etc., what is the point of getting up in arms?

This is why I say that the White Western population have been scared shitless into thinking that any non inclusion of minorities is wrong. It isn't, I'm a person of colour, do I care if a person of Indian background isn't in MK? No I do not, because nationality/race means nothing to me in a fighting game. Put yourself in my shoes for a second and tell yourself what would be more offensive, the non inclusion of a character of Indian background, or the inclusion of an Indian character due to public outcry, who wears a turban, is pretty much just a filler character with no relevance whatsoever? I'd imagine most of you would choose the latter.

This is why I said what I said about why is there a burning desire or need for some of you to be represented in a game where racial background, sexual orientation is irrelevant. The end result would be someone like Jax. End of story.

This. Well said. Would thank if I could.

My favourite character is Jade. And I'm a pasty white gay guy. She doesn't represent me and I don't want to be her, nor do I want to sex her. I just think she is a cool character.

I don't care about being represented in games. I just want cool games with cool characters in them. Then it doesn't matter what skin colour or sexuality the characters have, as long there is varitey. And MK has alot of variety in both humans and monstrous beings.

Your ethnicity or race or gender or sexuality or whatever shouldn't be represented in the game just for the sake of being represented. And I don't feel any of the MK characters do that. Jax might be the first black guy, but he isn't in the game just to have a black guy! He is so much more than that, and if you guys can't see that, then I suggest you open your minds and step out of those narrow boxes you live in.

The only racism in MK is the racism YOU guys make.

I agree with everything you said, and yes I highly doubt that Jax was created to be the black dude in MK for the sake of having a black dude in, but the qualities that NRS have given him are extremely stereotypical. Especially when compared to Kai and Cyrax.

He is a super-intelligent engineer in robotics/cybernetics/bionics, have build a portal device for the Special Forces to travel through to other worlds, such as Outworld, he created his own cybernetic arms, he re-programmed cyber Subbie, is a master military tactician and the major of said Special Forces... How is any of that stereotypical black guy?

So he is also a buff guy who talks street. If those are the only qualities you look at, then it is you who are being racist.

But why did NRS have to deliberately do that to the character is what I am asking. Why give him a Rapper Costume? How am I being the racist here when I do not approve of NRS doing that to the character?

Because you are creating a problem where there is none.
I do agree, Jax's MKDA-MKA alt was VERY stereotypical though.

However, many people tend to walk on eggshells when it comes to dealing with a black character, because they don't want to offend anyone or be racist. But because they have that mindset, they actually have a racist mind, because they see a black person being something else than just another human being.

Fact is though, the stereotypes are there for a reason. The black stereotype lives because alot of black people are living that stereotype! Jax wearing a hoodie and having a golden chain around his neck... well, alot of black men wear that. And apparently, so does Jax now and then. It's stereotypical indeed, but it is a reflection of some real-life black men. That's not racism though, because it isn't a problem. It's just how it is.

Jax is a strong character with an expansive intelligent mind... he just happens to have a dark skin tone.

Sonya is a white, strong, blonde military woman with somewhat mannish features. That's a stereotype.
Johnny is a white, brash and somewhat dumbass Hollywood celebrity. That's a stereotype.
Liu Kang is an Asian, kung fu shaolin monk who sounds like a turkey while fighting. That's a stereotype!

However, I don't see people acting out of their way to critisize the MK team for having these characters live within these stereotypes. But as soon someone says anything about a black character, then there will always be someone pointing a finger at them while yelling "RACIST!"... but the thing is, those who point those fingers are the ones with the racist mindset.

...of course unless someone makes an obvious racist comment, then he/she is of course being racist.

Just because I didn't say 'in general' does not mean I was referring to the entire black population. As for you saying you could sit up and 'rip on gays' as you put it, go ahead. Your opinion has the same value to me as a weed growing incessantly in a garden; it doesn't have any value whatsoever.

I'm just worried that we are not focusing on the real problem here guys. I know that some are dissatisfied by the exclusion of MK's black female, but I think there is a bigger issue. Why is no one standing up for the Edenians? We need more Edenian representation than just Kitana. She's an over-privileged posh princess! Jade's exclusion is very disheartening for us African-Edenians...

Tanya NEEDS to be in this game. Brilliant story, lots of potential & her appearance/moves were pretty cool as well. She deserves a comeback.

African-Edenians. XD
Edenia doesn't have an Africa, silly.
