Character Crisis

For the first time in fighting game history, I'm having a hard time selecting a main character. I'm still trying to figure out how exactly do I want to play this game. I initially went with Kitana because I thought her Assassin variation would have more of a rushdown play style. Assassin does enhance her rushdown capabilities but she's still a zoner at heart. I don't find enjoyment in zoning people out so this character obviously wasn't going to fit my style.

Moving on, I went to Cassie Cage, the daughter of my main from MK9. A diehard rushdown character. Should've been a perfect fit for me......but it wasn't. Practicing with her felt like a chore. I wasn't improving my skills simply because I wasn't having fun. Dropped.

From there I went down the list of characters I was remotely interested in: Takeda, D'vorah, Jax, Jin. I couldn't connect with any of them. At this point, I just said f#%k it and shifted the responsibility of finding my main to the random select icon. I'll force myself to learn whatever character the CPU selects. What character did it choose? The first lady of MK: Sonya Blade! A character I had to interest in at all. Played with her in story but didn't really make a attempt to learn her. So, I take her into training mode to see what she has to offer and dang it was I blown away. Super fast run, good mix ups, dive kick and all three of her variations were unique and very fun to play. She arouses my interest. I want to dissect her. I want to level up with her. I connect with her.

Anyone else having/had a character crisis?

I have. Cassie was gonna be my main, but she has horrible combos. I main Sonya too now, but just the Covert Ops variation.

I've found on this game that the characters I've never been huge a huge fan of seem to be my favorites, Jax I like and want to improve with and Liu Kang seems natural to pick up and play as.

A little bit, but I always come back to Mileena, I picked up Kenshi as a second. I say a little bit because Mileena is in dire need of a buff, her over heads are so slow it's pathetic, they gave her no tools to work with. A roll doesn't hit low, her teleport kick isn't an overhead. The list goes on. It makes me sad cause I really don't want to main anyone else.

Didn't expect Mileena to be my 2nd string (haven't liked her since MK2). But she's straight up relentless and has great mix ups. I've played over 200 matches with her, and have a 90% win percentage. Beast.

Went with Goro (due to the absence of Sheeva) and loved him so far. I haven't played with anyone else at all outside of story mode. I'm really waiting for Jason though. Otherwise my secondary was going to be Sonya or Raiden.

Cassie has horrible combos? I hope you realize that she's undoubtedly one of the best characters in the game right now. She has insane setups, decent mix-ups & her damage is great.

It's still too early to say which characters are the best but Cassie is definitely a strong character. All three of her variations are good.

When in doubt, go with Sonya

Covert Ops is the most fun but I also want to learn Special Forces.

I use one character and one variation like I discussed in other threads ..I'm doing really well.i hope you find your character sooner than later ...I will eventually learn Cassie or Sonya

I dunno, Cassie wasn't clicking with me, though Johnny Cage certainly has.

I was going to go with Kotal (Too slow), Erron Black (Too Zoney), and Mileena (Too similar between variations). I started trying out different characters, and I have to say A-List Johnny is about what I like with a character; mind games with his ability to charge specials, ability to hit-confirm meter burn, rushdown with a touch of zone. And if I wanna learn how to Zone Proper there's Stunt Double Johnny.

Johnny Cage has always been my favorite personality wise, this game made me say he's my favorite playstyle wise too.

It just irritates me when people blame a character for their lack of skill. "Hey, I can't use this character, they must be terrible!"

You playing the game or having a relationship with it?! Lol

I like Jacqui honestly for that in your face style of attack. I'm also trying to learn kenshi and subby as they have potential as well

I really want to learn Takeda too but he's actully been a bit tougher to use than I thought

I love Johnny similar reasons.I can't get the hang of his A-list variTion just yet because I can't find any specific mixups that the he uses in that variation .

I also thought Takeda would be a guy I'd get decent with but so far I cant get any sort of rhythm going no matter what variation I try

I know the feeling. I've gone from Reptile, to Sub Zero, to Scorpion, to Ermac, to Sonya, to dabbling in Jaqui and Kenshi... I think I am gonna just not main anyone at this rate lol

Well, I do sleep with the game every night

Yeah, it's frustrating but don't give up. Did you try every single character on the roster? Your main could be the one character you least expected or one of the four DLC characters.

Urggh, Kim is a pretty girl but she has a ugly crying face. How is that even possible?
