Batman: Arkham City

I quite enjoyed the stealth in this game, and felt it captured the essence of Batman fairly well. That's what made AA great: it balanced action, stealth and detective work very well so that it didn't get too repetitive. Batman really is a mix of all of those, so you have to mix them just right or it won't work right.

Anyway, I got more news. Yesterday, a new Robin gameplay trailer was released with fairly lengthy fighting. You can see that Robin uses his staff intermiddently when he fights, so it should be different than Batman or Catoman. Here's the trailer from youtube:

Since this is the first real time we are seeing Robin in action, what is your opinion of him? I have to say, he looks like a worthwhile bonus and character, and I can't wait to try him out when he releases as DLC.

shit i was hoping nightwing but it looks like i'm getting robin in my game.

You get Robin from Best Buy?! I might just get this game now!

Yup, Robin is from Best Buy for the USA. That commercial is British I believe, but Gamestop isn't offering Robin in the USA. Gamestop offers The Joker challenge maps and Batman:TAS skin if you're a powerup rewards member.

All pre-order bonuses are DLC later, so don't worry about picking certain retailers.

I've got the Collector's Edition of B:AC on pre-order from Gamestop. Huge anticipation for this game, HUGE. I really, really enjoyed Arkham Asylum, so I've got high hopes this will be even better.

Great Marketing campaign? I.E. slowly releasing information on the game to build hype instead of one huge announcement and then 4 months of nothing. I think it works better the first way as you are constantly reminded of the game rather than it being forgotten.

i think the constant updating is nice but this is also a game it works for. I remember Marvel Vs Capcom 3 did something similar, announcing 2 new characters a week. With Batman, we already know so much information if they show a trailer with two-face, or penguin, or catwoman we recognize the character getting more excited. plus how packed this game is helps as well. so much to show off.

NVM looks like i'm getting the batman shit. lemme guess, nightwing is from amazon?

Nightwing's not pre-order DLC at all. He is leaked future DLC that will be released after the game releases. Technically, he was actually never announced. He got leaked from the Trophy list being released, so no, Nightwing isn't a pre-order bonus.

Robin is a pre-order bonus, and as with the rest of the pre-order content, it will be released later on as DLC. The Batman suits are cool because not only can you use them in the challenge maps, but you can also use them in the single-player campaign, which is why those are cool. As far as we've been told, all the other characters are only playable in select levels in the SP or limited only to challenge maps, which is why I thought the suits were cool.

@pimppaperclip You pre-ordered at the American Gamestop, correct? If so, you get the Joker challenge maps, the Batman: Gotham Knight movie for download and if you are a powerup rewards member and pre-order, you get the TAS skin. If not, I could tell you what you'll get if you don't know already.

Here's a fairly new gameplay trailer featuring the free roam mechanic in AC:

In the video, you can see how his flight mechanics work and what free-roam is like. Batman has some sort of signal interceptor that he uses in the video to eavesdrop on the villians. It seems that quests are marked cleverly by a bat-signal similar to the one employed by Commissioner Gordon. Should be cool.

yeah i got that stuff. the first DLC i'm buying is nightwing (when he comes out)

This game should release as Batman: Arkham City Game of the Year Edition right out of the gate, because it will in fact be, game of the year.

Good news for anyone who didn't get Batman: Arkham Asylum. When you buy Arkham City you get Arkham Asylum GOTYE for free! Pretty sweet deal if you ask me!

More reviews are in, and they're looking great. As you know, the OPMA(Official Playstation Magazine Australia) gave Batman: Arkham City a perfect 10/10 score. The new reviews gave the game a 97% and a 92% score. Games Masters(97% score) said in praise that Batman: Arkham City is "brave, brutal, brilliant- the gold standard by which ALL videogames should be judged". That's a very bold statement of high praise. The 92% score was stated by Play 3, which is a German magazine, who went on to say that Batman: Arkham City is "the best superhero game ever made.

This just reinforces my belief that this game will be great, and hopefully it convinces people to buy this game. The original site that cultivated this information is provided in the link:

So, what are your opinions on these three reviews thus far? Do you feel they are accurate? I feel like they are legitimate; after the first perfect one, I thought OPMA exaggerated, but know I see that they weren't too far off. I really believe, at this rate, this game could be a serious contender for GOTY.

I'm sure that the reviews aren't hyperbole. I mean Arkham asylum was damn near perfect. Its only fall backs were not having a bigger enviroment to explore and it was a little short for my taste. The combat system was innovative and well done as were the graphics and controls. It had a great story and great characters. In Arkham City they've turned everything up to 11. Bigger enviroment, more villains, more heroes. They've polished the combat system, introduced new gadgets and loads of side quests. If anything I'd say these reviews are a preview of what the general consensus of the gaming media are going to say about this game. Every developer that rushes out sub par super hero schlock need to look at how RockSteady does it and follow suit. Because they have broken the code on how to make a great comic book/super hero game. Less than two weeks! I am so ****in ready!

Very well said. I agree with all of what you said. The funny thing about the review is that the other day I was telling my friend how this game was going to revolutionize what a sequel is and raise the bar for videogames as a whole, not just superhero games, and then this shows up. I said that not because I'm a Batman fan, but because of how the game is constructed. An open world game of that scale with that much detail has never been done before. For instance, many of the buildings in the huge area we can explore can be entered and traversed. Also, they include a large portion of Batman lore, from some lesser known villians to the location where Batman was created (Crime Alley). Red Dead had a lot of detail, but it was more about the sheer size of the area you could explore rather than taking into effect the finer details.

I've beaten AA again, and I am playing through it again. It really didn't feel repetitive to me, so I just keep playing it lol. That two for one deal is a bargain, but I think most people who are getting AC have already played AA.

I agree completely! They are treating the enviroment as a character and you can't half ass gotham city. They have almost 70 years of Batman: Lore to draw from so I would expect to see lots of iconic places up close and personal. This game has a leg up on other open world games because it's gotham city and there is so much lore and so many stories tied to it. The new interrogation system and the short wave radio that will give you tips and lead you to locations and side missions is definitely innovative. Rocksteady is doing a great job putting players in the shoes of the dark knight. I think once this game hits it's going to change how open world games are made period. This is definitely in the running for GOTY I would say it would win for sure but Rage, SkyRim and MW3 are also gonna be huge. But as far as I'm concerned this is the game I've been waiting for with the most anticipation. 3rd person action/adventures are my genre of choice.
