Anyone else think Achievements/Trophies are a waste of time?

Yeah i never like trophies. I Hate all this Competition of who is the one with more trophies thing. I love to be like old school with nothing of that stuff. I wish the next gen consoles dont have it or had a option to turn it off.

I completely disagree. Depending on how the cheeves are constructed, they add much longevity to a game. To be perfectly honest, were it not for cheeves I would probably not even give 90% of the games I've played in this generation of consoles a second glance. They give you something to shoot for. Some test your skill by having you complete certain in-game feats, others test your abilities by having you do higher difficulties. In the end, they just give you something to shoot for, a reason to play the game some more.

Face it, games have grown in complexity over the years. It's not so simple as "pick up and play" anymore, because we gamers demand more out of our games. It's not the 8-bit era, or even the 16-bit era where you just play for fun...we need to be engaged in a great story, we need to have likeable characters...but the downside to that is the elimination of casual gaming makes these games a chore to play more than once...and once you've beaten them you don't feel like going back half the time. That's where cheeves come in...you have a reason to go back just so you feel like you accomplished something.

I never understood people who think cheeves are a waste of time...they add longevity by giving you more to do. If you want to ignore them, that's up to you. Maybe it's because I'm older, but for me to come back and replay a game, I need a reason to. I can just pick up and play anymore...too much responsibility...family, work, bills. Once I'm done with a game, the extra fun aspect comes in when I'm hunting cheeves.

The only competition I have in cheeves or trophies is with friends, we try to outdo each other. And that is fun too. But personally? Trophies/Cheeves like the multiplayer ones you'll find in Halo or Gears of War? I don't give a damn about those. I despise competitive multiplayer enough as it is, so I have no desire to try to get multiplayer related cheeves.

I enjoy unlocking them, but some can be very annoying. In dead Space for example, I am only missing one for the platinium :bawling:

Etryus, I know what you mean. Dead Space 2's Hard Core mode achievement/trophy is retarded. It's doable, but not something I'm going to devote any extra time to.

Actually I am speaking about Dead Space 1. There is this annoying trophy where you have to explode meteorites while keeping more than 50% of your shield (you start with 75%) ... The number of active meteorites is generated randomly and you need to be extremely lucky so that you don't get a meteorite shower.

I thought you didn't beat it on its highest difficulty setting or something. If you play it on Easy I'm sure you can unlock that Trophy/Achievement. Dead Space 2 Hardcore is ridiculous ( 3 freaking saves) are you kidding me? I'm on chapter 3 and I already used up 2 saves.

i only care about trophies if it's a game i like, RE5, uncharted, where all fun, but don't realy care for the trophies much

So I heard about Dead Space 2.. I managed to finish DS 1 on highest difficulty using only the plasma cutter (for double gold trophies). But that specific meteor trophy is the same on all difficulties, I have searched the net/forums for days. People do it again and again until they get lucky. How does it work, well you are using a canon to blast meteorites and the game generates randomly 1-2-3 or 4 meteorites. If it sends alot of 1 meteorites, then it's easier. Unfortunatly it's hardcore, sometimes I get 4 then 4 right behind the first wave lol.
Oh well maybe some day I'll manage it.

@Etryus

Yeah, that Meteor shooting gallery trophy/cheeve was a nightmare to get. Here's what you do:

Turn up the game's brightness all the way. If necessary, turn up the brightness settings on your television as well. You'll be able to see the meteors coming long beforehand. The most important thing about this? STAY CALM. The biggest blunder you can do is get panicked and start shooting wildly at everything that comes at you. Focus on the meteors coming directly at you, the ones that are far off to the side don't do as much damage as direct hits. Take your time, aim the cannon, and use only ONE barrel. If you use both you'll overheat the gun quickly. Remember to focus first on the bigger ones, since they split into smaller chunks once you blow them up. One hit from a large meteor can easily do 40% damage to the hull.

The meteor shooting gallery isn't affected by difficulty, so don't bother setting it to easy. You'll get a bit better each time you attempt it. After not being able to nail that cheeve for over a year, I read the "stay calm" strategy and nailed it in under an hour.

Thanks for the tip! I'll be trying it as soon as I dive in DS again. I might take some yoga lessons before in order to stay calm :top:

They are not a waste of time because you don't have to do them if you don't want to. Besides, most of them unlock by themselves while you are playing. I don't worry about those very much. Just enjoy the game and don't make your life too difficult.

I have an obsession with achievements :P

Right now i believe i have a gamerscore of about 84,000 :)
Im completely aware of the fact that they dont really do anything, but it just feels cool unlocking them, makes me feel good inside :)

I think with that last comment, Eks wins. Pretty much right on the money.

And in relation to the topic at hand again, sometimes Achievements have other benefits besides adding to trophy/gamerscore. For example, Mass Effect as a particular game that I recall wherein you got a specific in-game reward for almost every cheeve. Everything from increased damage with certain weapon types to high experience gains and whatnot.

More games should couple in-game benefits with cheeves to make them worth getting a little bit more.

I guess for some people, trophy-unlocking is a challenge or a time-killer. I wouldn't call it waste of time though, more like a fun feature.

For me, I've played games on the PS3 for over two years now. I don't think I've ever purposely unlocked a trophy before though. ;)

Personally, I only worry about getting trophies/achievements when I want to extend the replayability of the game, or if there's an unlockable item that you get from getting one.

i dont really care 4 trophies. i play a game because i want to not because im competing against a trophy nerd :P
