Advertising

Balls of Steel
We all know it, we all know there is no way to avoid it. How far do you think advertising should be allowed to go?

I think eventually it is just going to be the way it is in Idiocracy (hilarious movie) where there will just be an advertisement (or several) at all times with anything that has a screen.

I actually boycott products that get advertized too much. I hate commercials, and I really hate infomercials. I dont watch TV much anymore though so I wouldn't know which products not to buy right now probably all of the name brand stuff lol

Great topic idea Mike!

I'm kind of on the fence with this one. On the one hand, it seems necessary for a business to advertise in order to attract customers and be successful. Without it, capitalism wouldn't function too well. On the other hand, there is something purely evil about trying to convince people to purchase a product they didn't already know they need. Hm...

COMMERCIAL'S ARE NECESSARY,
they provide info. on items, but there should not be many commercial's right after each other...

How do you think the programs you watch get their money? You need those commercials....plus, it's a pee break.

I never let commercials coax me into buying anything. I buy what I like, not because something is advertised as the 'in' thing to purchase. I don't care much for being a part of the 'in' crowd.

Everyone's had to have been swayed by a ad at somepoint.

when i see a coca-cola commercial... It makes me want a coke even though I wasn't thinkinga bout it lol.

Sometimes food commercials make me realize I'm hungry. Doesn't mean though I'm eating at that specific advertised place.

But it does mean it's somewhat working.

notice i only used foods as examples though, as they are a necessity to live and therefore I'm easily swayed by them.

when it comes to games/cleaning products/medicine. I never bite on anything I don't trust them lol.

A product will never tell you their faults unless it's medicine and even then they say the side effects so fast you need to play it frame by frame to even catch it all.

but to reiterate what Jade said.

Ad's are needed for some things to survive... I mean... w/o ads would there be Radio/TV? let alone a updated one(New stuff like shows)?

EVO wouldn't exist w/o ad's either.

So much truth in this. Because of that I have no problems with commercials as long as they aren't too obtrusive. I don't mind the idea of product placement in TV/movies as long as its passive and you don't see the product forced into the camera too many times.

I kind of like what they were doing on WipeOut HD (not sure if they still do this). But you would sometimes get a Dr. Pepper commercial during the load screen. I liked it cause it was a funny commercial and much better then watching a bar fill.

Also... I <3 Geico's commercials lol, they are always welcome

I think we should have the choice to skip ads or not. The point of Advertisements is to see if a person is interested in a product, if their not then they should have the right to skip it.

I agree with this if only you are forced to watch atleast a few seconds. Because, people would just skip it EVERYTIME before half a second even passed. so how can you judge it when you are skipping it before you even see it? Sponsor's aren't benefitting that way.

I hate the fact they infest every corner of the virtual world. Even youtube isnt safe.

Yep. If you don't like ads, I hope you like paying subscription fees for everything that you do.

Once most people find out how much subscription rates are, even when they are next to nothing, they prefer ad based content. It is virtually impossible to make money on the internet except for through ad revenue. If it wasn't for ads, Google would have to charge you a fee every time you searched something.

Ads keep the world free. Plus, the more ubiquitous they are, the more clever they become. The big problem advertisers face is cutting through "noise," meaning making their ads stand out because people quickly learn how to ignore ads. That's how great and memorable campaigns are born.

Personally, as overplayed as she is, I still adore Flo on the Progressive ads. I also like the Allstate mayhem guy.

lol, you mean the guy that basically plays charades?

I'm cool with advertising, I realize that it's necessary for many different reasons, but there is one place that I just can't stand seeing ads: sports uniforms. I absolutely hate seeing a giant corporate logo on the chest of a team uniform. I can't take any sport seriously when their players are just running advertisements. A sports uniform stands for a team, not a company.

I'm just glad the NFL, NHL or MLB haven't gotten to that point yet. I don't know what I'd do if that happened. It's already bad enough that the jerseys have the logo of the manufacturer that makes them (Reebok, Nike).

Also, corporate naming rights for stadiums, I hate that.

It's... Okay. I mean, I hate it and absolutely cannot stand being pitched to. I especially cannot stand the ASPCA adverts that they show on Comedy Central. Seriously.. Wrong ****ing network. My only problem with it, is advertising to children. They don't know any better. It's not right. Advertise to adults all you want, most of us can think for ourselves. But kids don't know what to think. I forget what country it's illegal in, but they completely banned advertising to kids somewhere and we need to get on that track. Although I highly doubt we ever will.
