Talking about it is always the best thing because that person will not feel like he is alone and, if he feels comfortable with you, he will talk to you about his feelings. That should relieve some of the sadness and make him feel a bit better.
I never understood why people get so hung up...I mean, I get the fact that people are in love with someone and all that jazz but there are so many people out there, there is not just one person for everyone. If your relationship fails, you learn from it, get back on your feet and start again. It is not as easy as it sounds, as there is obvious hurt involved, but everyone has the ability to get over it and get on with life. We have the ability to get over the deaths of loved ones, there is no reason why we can't move on from love. Some people just aren't meant to be together so you go out and find someone else. There is also no reason why a former couple can't still be friends. Some couple make better friends than couples. My parents divorced when I was 13 and they are much happier as friends.
Plus, in this case, he was simply rejected. It isn't like he was in a relationship.
