MK movie update/MK Legacy discussion

It was pretty cool to me. I was looking for more in Kitana and Mileena's arc. Especially the Mileena vs Johnny fight. However, here's my top 5 "That cliff hanger was worser than..." List:
5. Halo 2
4. Wet
3. Mortal Kombat Konquest
2. Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
1. Fire Emblem (The Anime)

I watched the whole season 2 now. I've got to say it isn't really bad. It was pretty cool infact! My favorite episode has got to be episode 6. I love how Mileena "Caged" Johnny Cage on her own way. ;)

For season 3, here is who I hope will be in.
Jade
Sindel
Noob Saibot
Skarlet
Rain
Kabal
Smoke
Sheeva
Goro
Kintaro
Motaro

Characters that will most likely return...
Johnny Cage
Sonya
Jax
Kano
Raiden
Scorpion
Kitana
Stryker
Liu Kang
Kung Lao
Shao Kahn
Shang Tsung
Quan Chi
Kenshi
Sektor
Cyrax

I fully agree with your last point: ending a season with a cliffhanger is not essentially a bad thing but just letting it go without any kind of closure whatsoever is always a horrible decision. The viewer needs to get some kind of fulfillment at the end just to be able to take in the whole thing he/she just watched as something coherent. One could argue that at least Scorpion and Sub-Zero got a closure but this is hardly true because the actual conflict was not resolved in any shape or form.

However there's one thing I really liked: the first two episodes were constructed in a fine way and handling Liu Kang as a negative character is a very fresh and appropriate element to the franchise and actually has some depth in it. The idea of too strong righteusness turning into hate and evil was portrayed pretty well and that's not like what we are used to see in martial art movies. The dialogue where Shang Tsung convinced Liu Kang to switch sides was very poorly written sadly which kinda ruined this aspect for me but still I can't argue with the fact that the Kung Lao / Liu Kang parts were the strongest moments of the season.

It's also a good thing that fatalities were included. This is something the first film and every other motion picture adaptations of MK lacked so far so it was great to see them.

At the bottom line this is why I think it was the worst MK motion picture ever: making a simple and coherent story about a group of people beating up another group of people is not nuclear physics. It's not a question of budget, it's not a question of time, it's simply a question of common sense. There are a lot of scenes and characters (they include Stryker and tell us nothing about him?) I could cut after a second of thinking after seeing them written in the script because they doesn't serve fleshing out the concept of the season: the tournament. We didn't need to see a scene where Liu Kang murders a bunch of random people, we didn't need to see Johnny Cage in the can after what happened in the first season, we didn't need to see Kitana and Mileena arguing with each other because after watching their backstory in season one we knew this would happen, we knew she was betrayed by Khan and we knew for sure she'll switch sides. Hell, we don't even have to see when they go back to the backstory of Scorpion / Sub-Zero, that was already established so why spend a full episode on Sub-Zero learning one thing?

You can handle these things through dialogue or a bit of narration so you can focus your money and time on the tournament itself which is basically the foundation that is meant to hold the whole thing together. Instead of focusing on the backstory you can have the fighters interact with each other in the present so we can at least feel they are on the same team. You can give a tournament what a tournament begins with: an opening speech by Shang Tsung where you meet the new fighters and learn what the MK tournament is all about. A bunch of people wandering around on an empty island filled with MK flags and chasing around each other is not really a tournament to me. If they decide the fate of the world in these circumstances that's kinda lame. :D Ultimately this ruined the whole thing for me.

And as I've said, this is a very simple way of storytelling, even a 12 year old could do it after watching Enter the Dragon, the first MK film or even that good awful Dead or Alive movie. Messing up a thing so simple is a very, VERY huge flaw and is actually inexcusable.

So just to have a score at the end, it's 2.5-3 out of 10 in my opinion.

Amen! I mean I did get some enjoyment out of it but everything stated above is 100% true. The script writers were awful. Let's hope this guy doing the movie is better than that. If only Joss Whedon was working on it....

If Joss Whedon was working on it, he'd probably find someway to make Sonya the main character, or Kitana...

yea...pretty sure I also dont want that guy involved.

Long time fan, occasional lurker - figured I'd post my thoughts.

I grew up with MK, saw both movies when they came out in theaters and personally I think these new series kick the shit out of the original movies. The only thing that was odd was the actor of Kung Lao but I blame that on watching Food Network :P

I'm glad they deviate from the core story of MK that's been told via games and movies. If they stuck true to that, we would be getting rehashed versions of what's already been told a thousand different ways. This is obviously a series for MK fans, not to tell the story of the tournament, but to just drop you down in the middle of what story they want to tell in the series. I'll give a larger format movie, something that has the time and budget to tell it as if someone who doesn't know a thing about MK would understand.

The things I love, is how they setup the Sub-Zero/Scorp backstory between their clans, but then furthered it but the framework of QUan Chi. Someone bent on revenge (cue the old school Scorp theme lol) on false pretenses makes it a bit more dramatic. Plus seeing Scorpion perform the spine rip was unexpected and made it a bit more brutal. When you expect the characters to only perform the moves from the game/movies already released - it starts to feel overly calculated. This kept it fresh. I also love what they did with Liu, he's always been the hero - perfect morals, some sense of purity. The dialog between him and Shang in the diner sets a great mood. Typically Outworld is always portrayed as just some force that wants to take over/rape resources. The idea that the human race no longer takes care of itself, or honors those who protect it - does in my mind make it a worthy contender to be "whipped clean". I love the original Shang actor has return, he gives it that retro-charm, but the character feels much darker.

I don't mind the cliffhanger, because it's not like we already know which way the story is going to head. The liberties they take make it unique and it was pretty damn enjoyable to watch. If it takes time for a 3rd season, or if they do the movie before then - this was just what I think is needed to keep things feeling fresh. I'd love to see the movie take the cue of not feeling obligated to be 100% exact to the previous games/comics/movies/etc - the concept of what the MK tournament is strong enough that you could really turn things on it's head and still tell an amazing story based on some amazing characters.

Lol ok both you guys made your point. I suggested it because after seeing the avengers, he showed he knows how to balance a story between a bunch of main characters without making it cheesy in a bad way. He knows how to do great action pieces too. Imagine if the director who made the Raid did MK. Idk if he knows the lore like KT but it would be badass.

Bollocks.

I expected too much, so it seems.

Cons:

Repeating the same fights/sequences we have already seen. Includes both seasons. I do understand that they are like flashbacks, but they really could've made them much shorter.
The atrocious Sub-Zero costume.
I thought the fights were ridiculously short...
Timeline issues...
Scorpion doing a Sub-Zero on Sub-Zero...Nice. What happened to Toasty?
Speaking of Scorpion v Sub-Zero, I've actually skipped that fight completely at first because of that annoying MK Legacy 2 logo coming up. Yeah, I thought it was the end already, and just went to the other episode...Whoever edited that is a genius.

Pros:

The relationship between Bi Han and Hanzo.
Mileena vs Cage/Kitana.
Kenshi's story and fight against Ermac.
Uhh...Not much else.

Meh's:

Seems to me that these series was focused more on Liu Kang and Kung Lao than anyone else.
Ermac's design. While I like that they stopped doing the YET ANOTHER ninja, I really thought they could've been a bit more original than just a mediocre zombie.
Raiden. After seeing Raiden in Mortal Kombat (the movie), nothing seems to be coming close. Well, other than the Raiden from the Conquest series...
Scorpion vs Sub-Zero was so-so.

Think it's safe to say that the game (2011) did a better job at storytelling than these webseries...

The movie needs to be properly thought out. MK:L is good as a web-series, I would expect to see a lot more as far as presentation goes for the movie and a lot better performances from the actors and stunt people.

The script, plot and pacing really need to be worked on. So far its kinda all over the place they need to establish just what the hell is happening as far as timelines/ time travel or what ever the heck it's supposed to be happening there.

They should delve deeper into the reason for Quan-chi enlisting Scorpion to take out Sub-zero. Is it because he fears him, or because he wanted to enlist him as well?

Liu Kang needs to be less of a whine ass and more of a "dark defender". A monk would never become that self absorbed. His mental discipline wouldn't allow for it, especially seeing as how he is the champion of MK! if anything he would be accustomed to seeing death and his teachings from the temple would allow him to accept these things because they are part of life. Additionally it was him who turned his back on the temple, not the other way around. He seems too weak to me personally and Kung-Lao is too apologetic.

Ermac's story was cool but they should have done more for his costume.should have had a mask over his face and given him glowing eyes.

Sub-zero's- costume I can't express enough how disappointed I am that they gave him a Phucking wet suit!!! or was it a biker suit?? either way it was garbage!!!!!

The Sub-zero / Scorpion "bromance" was too much for me. Keep them enemies / rivals. it makes the Quan-chi deception more plausible. Both sub-zero's died off to early but scorpion is still there so the question i have is who will the champ be? Scorpion?

If they do a season 3 I want to see the one fight no one even thinks about a fight so brutally epic it can only be described as necessary, inevitable and eternal. you ready for it? ........

NooB SaiboT Vs ScorpioN. yeah that's the fight i wanna see. A rivalry so bitter it carries on into the after life.

Now I know they technically work for the same sexually confused sorcerer (I hate Quanchi) but I want to see that fight. Find a way to make it happen. Noob vs Scorp Do it!
They gave the "yellow cry-hole" his shot at revenge now even it out and give Sub his!

Open it up with them competing for who will be Quan chi's permanent enforcer.

Quan chi introduces Scorpion to a "new creation, old acquaintance" .

Scorpion: "I have no interest in your playthings Quan chi!?"

Quan chi: "You'd do well to remember to place Scorpion".

Scorpion: peruses the new creation, startled. "Sub-Zero!?!?" "What is the meaning of this!?"

Noob Saibot: "The one you call sub-zero is no more". "I am Noob Saibot". "I am your better in death as i was in life".

Scorpion to Quan chi, enraged: "What do you have in mind!?!"

Quanchi: *with a sinister grin* "merely a friendly competition between old friends."

Scorpion: "Very well". "I will take pleasure in killing you again!"

Noob Saibot: "You. Will. Fail". *Saibot separates from his back Laughing maniacally"

Saibot wins, yet is not allowed to finish Scorpion off

Quan chi: "That is enough!" "Leave him Saibot".

*Saibot obediently obeys the command.

Quan chi: Come we have more pressing matters to attend to.

Scorpion is left in the netherrealm seriously wounded, powers depleted questioning his decision and the cruel fate he must endure even in the afterlife. With his powers depleted he also finds that Quan chi's hold on him is weakened do to the lack of "nether" in his body. he staggers through the wastelands of the netherrealm....blahblahblah..... this frees him up to be the new main character or whatever other grandiose scheme they have for him.

I dunno do whatever you want, but give Sub-zero his props. We've watched him get crapped on by Scorpion for the past 2 years.

The asshat that wrote avengers shouldn't ever be let near a MK project. Avengers aside from the acting was bland and boring.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that of The Avengers. As for the Legacy II series, it could've done with shorter flashbacks, longer fights, and less logo screens.

Kitana also looked like Carrie from King of Queens

Good concept, horrible execution.

Everything else has been stated by posters before me so I'm not even gonna get into that.

Overall it was enjoyable, without taking into account all the things they screwed up on.

Maybe its just me but...does anyone think that there might be more to Liu's gal being killed and his turn to the darkside than meets the eye?
Perhaps Shang was one of those Robbers in disguise and actually the one who took the gal's life?

Perhaps this is a plot by Shang to destroy Kang piece by piece for apparently 'taking his head'. Perhaps Shang is using Kang, like Chi is using Scorpion?

They already seem to be going in the same route; revenge for something.

Have kang kill all the earthrealm guys to where they can claim earth then reveal when it all said and done that it was all a lie, I killed your gal, convinced u that humanity was not worth protecting, just so happens kung lao turned his back on you, so in the end you(the former champ) could turn on earth and help outworld claim a victory. Now you are of no use to me, you die now" sorta thing?
