what does 'hats' mean?

Someone sent me a message after a game that just said "hats". I have no idea what it meant? I asked but he never messaged back.
 
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say: your opponent was raging because you used Raiden(judging from your avatar).

Raiden and Kung Lao are considered the two best characters in the game, so when someone says "hats" or "hat tier" it's a reference to those characters.
 
Raiden, KL and Freddy are jokingly called "hat tier" on account that any characters that have hats seem to be far superior to everyone else on the roster.
 
A hat is something you wear. Usually on the head.

I definitely disagree. I can see how Kung Lao is pretty tough to fight. But when I see someone pick Raiden, I usually know right then that I'm in for an easy fight. People spam his teleport and superman, and that doesnt work if you know how to defend it.

I did play Raiden against the guy. But I definitely did well. I know I got at least one 44 percent combo on him, and a few in the 35-40 range. They make not take skill to 'use', but I have Raiden mastered.
 
Lol "hat tier"? I can still kinda see that I guess. Haven't been playing much MK lately but I played like 4 days ago and Freddy was still glitched with projectiles and sh*t. I can see why people hate on them, because I sure as hell do too
