Street Fighter Team Confirms Mortal Kombat Rivalry Is Back

I hoped from the day this game got announced that it would be so good it'd bring the rebirth of the fighting game wars we had in the 90's, and according to one of Capcom's developers, it's officially exactly that.

During an E3 interview with Geoff Keighley, the man showing off the latest build of Street Fighter x Tekken was asked how he felt about Mortal Kombat - and after stating that he'd been longtime friends with MK co-creator Ed Boon, threw in that Mortal Kombat is once again their primary rival.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find this video ANYWHERE. I'm dying to find it so I can get an exact quote (I got goosebumps when he said it, that's normal right?) but it doesn't seem to be anywhere and the guy showing it off wasn't Ono. Can anybody here link me to it? I'll update the thread with the url if someone finds it.

Well thats no surprise, these are the two fighting franchises out on the general market right now.

uhhh Tekken? MvC3? you know those other tournament games? Soul Calibur 4, Virtua Fighter Online or whatever, There is tons of other fighters

MK9, Street fighter, and Marvel Vs Capcop are 2-D fighters. They are more important to many people. and the sales of these games also help prove this. and hopefully in the near future we will be saying goodbye forever
to 3-D fighters.

I am talking about new releases that would directly compete with SSFIV. MvC3 is still Capcom, so I dont even know why you listed that, and the rest of the games were released way before SSFIV, their time in the general market has passed. Which is why I said MK is the only direct competitor. As soon as Sega releases another VF, or Tecmo Koei releases another DOA and most definitely when Namco releases another Soul Calibur, Capcom will be saying the same thing about them.

Never played a street fighter game, are they anything compared to the MK series?
These are the difference (good or bad, depends on opinion):

-No blood and gore in street fighter.
-You need to hold back to block. (this results in having ambiguous cross-up attacks)
-Combos are generally harder to do in SF (links).
-Projectiles don't trade in SF, they cancel each other out.
-In SSF4, only special moves do chip damage. (so you can turtle and are not penalized for blocking well)
-SF is mostly based around footsies (playing chess with mid-range pokes) and mixups.
-MK9 is more about meter management, position advantage, trap/jail strings and mind games.
-Requires more execution to play SF (inputs are more complicated and less forgiving).
-In SSF4, the negative edge window isn't retarded like MK9.
-Online is better in SF.
-MK9 is simpler to get into.
-SSF4 has auto-corrects and input shortcuts. (allows scrubby reversal mashing)
-SSF4 has more 50/50s and vortexs. (you have to guess a lot).
-Throws in MK9 are 50/50s.

What's so bad about 3D fighters? I find Soul Calibur to be completely fine being 3D, same with Virtua Fighter.

Well because E3 is in America I wouldn't doubt an American Capcom representative saying that MK is their biggest competition right now.

If it were the same interview anywhere in Asia the representative would definitely say their biggest competition is obviously Namco. Tekken and Namco are the most more popular in Japan, Korea, and other countries very into the fighting scene in Asia. So if anyone thinks 3D fighters are going to dissapear any time in the future, you're way wrong. Capcom is serious competition for Namco, but Namco's fighters over in the east are ingrained in the culture over there. They televize Tekken6 majors in South Korea.

In America Capcom reins supreme but now MK is actually serving as competition which is just awesome. Mortal Kombat and Netherealm Studios over in the east hemisphere though are as popular as Namco and Tekken are over here. Which isn't much.
It's actually pretty odd.

-MK9 is more about meter management, position advantage, trap/jail strings and mind games.

Meter management in Street Fighter actually is just as crucial than it is in MK9. Some characters without dragon punches need meter for EX versions of some moves that could be used as a make shift dragon punch. In general alot of EX moves have properties that are so important for some matchups that you can't even put on pressure if you don't have the security of a specifix EX move. It's actually pretty damn crucial.

Street Fighter is also a gigantic battle for positioning too, so it's not too different from MK in that respect too.

I'll add one to:

-In street fighter many characters have an invulnurable super fast move called dragon punches (or shoryukens) that are used to break out of pressure strings and frame traps. Think of it like Kung Lao's spin... if Kung Lao's spin was invincible. They're punishable by full combo on block though.

-Throw mechanics suck in MK9.

thats because the online isnt a lagfest in street fighter. i am livid about this.

I don't understand how MK is competition to Capcom; the new MK is practically a Street Fighter game.

Moreover, Capcom has an online network. NRS doesn't. That's a huge difference.

3D fighters suck.

Oh, and thanks, Mr. Masters. It's great to hear that even Capcom is taking notice.

I actually went back online with SF Coz of the mk lag, found sf's gameplay so slow compared to mk. Am a fan of both but mk wins it for me

She BETTER be in Street Fighter X Tekken or RAGE!!!!!

Found the interview in case you guys wanted to watch it:

(the quote is on the second video around 10:20)

Super ridiculously hyped about this. SFxT, TekTag2, TxSF.... I'm glad MK came out to sustain my appetite for amazing new fighting games but I seriously cant wait for those three games to hit because, like I've said about a million times, I'm a HUGEEEE Tekken junky.

The fact that the people over at Capcom are keeping some of the same feel for the Tekken characters strings the same as they are in actual Tekken games. I'm pretty ****ing certain that I'll end up maining two Tekken characters, but only time will tell.

Roger and Miguel better be in it!!!!!!!!

Roger Jr:

Miguel:

I'm fan of both, but, it's just comparing hot-dogs with burgers : both have the properly moment to be appreciated. 2 different stuffs that are cool in their own way .....

Anyway, I'm more of a fan of MK 2011 than SSF4, so, my great fighting game passion resides on MK 2011 ..... SSF4 , I only play for fun, I don't take serious that game, but, I agree it's a great game (SSF4).

Roger and Miguel better be in it!!!!!!!!

Agreed! Miguel is such a badass. He always looks shitfaced when he fights. And Roger goes without saying. He's a ****ing Kangaroo, you don't **** with kangaroos. Tekken is the only fighting game I love outside of MK. Amazing how many moves everyone has, and how you can link stuff so fluidly. Even Tekken 2 had a good amount of depth to it! All of em' have!
