I am proud to say I own Goro: Prince of Pain #1 and Mortal Kombat: Rayden and Kano. Not just the regular versions, either; Goro #1 is the limited edition silver cover variant, and Rayden & Kano is the gold glossy variant.
I don't think MK will ever have a truly great 3D game, mainly because they will always be compared to the 2D versions. They had a franchise that got its popularity on the 2D versions so they should stick to that, even if it means pulling a SF4 and having 3D for the graphics alone.
No, Mortal Kombat got its popularity for being bloody, gritty, dark and different. Had MK not featured the aforementioned factors, it would have been just another fighting game in a long line of 2D fighting games. But the blood, grittiness and darkness is precisely what separated Mortal Kombat from other fighting games, not its 2D game play. MK-UMK3 were all 2D, because 2D was how a majority of fighting games were made at the time. After Trilogy, the series needed to evolve, because that 2D format and game play of Mortal Kombat was simply outdated. Sure, MKII and UMK3 are still popular, but do we want a new game exactly like II and U-3? No. Those games have a lasting nostalgic popularity, but it's not something that should be repackaged and offered as new to the market. The main reason is because Mortal Kombat has a long history of constantly evolving, and mostly, for the better.
The notion that no MK 3D game will ever be truly great because of the 2D versions is absolutely retarded. Deadly Alliance was a fantastic game, and Deception was a solid follow-up. The only people who won't admit that are those who blindly cling to their 2D MK games.
If you would have read my post in context you would have seen that I was addressing someone saying that all MK fans would blindly buy MK9.
Of course all MK fans will blindly buy MK9. But, there's a difference between blindly
buying, and blindly
liking. Of course some fans are going to hate MK9 for some reason or the other. But, if you think all MK fans won't buy the first legitimate MK game in years, you're living on another planet. MK9 is as highly anticipated by MK fans as MKIII, MK3 and Deadly Alliance all were.
