When
Midway announced a
Mortal Kombat game for the
Nintendo DS earlier in the year, many were wondering what
Midway had in store for the hit handheld. Last year, fans were treated to
Sony PSP ports of
Mortal Kombat: Unchained and two years ago with the first three
Mortal Kombat arcade games in
Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play. With the resurgence of
Nintendo and the
Nintendo Wii, publishers are paying more attention to
Nintendo even though many had recently waned with lackluster
GameCube sales. Finally after three years,
Midway will bring classic arcade
Mortal Kombat to the
Nintendo DS in a unique mixture of
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and
Puzzle Kombat. Check out our
developer interview with the producer of
Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the
Nintendo DS,
Hans Lo.
TRMK: Since this game will feature online play via WiFi are there going to be some enhancements to the online play system the MK team has used before?
Hans Lo: On WiFi we're going to be using a rating system in conjunction with Nintendo's Gamespy server. This will allow players to have the choice of playing against a friend using friend codes, or they can challenge other players who they do not know. What the system will do is try to pair up the player against someone of similar ranking within a certain range. By doing this, we allow gamers to play against a greater selection of adversaries. The player's performance will determine their ranking. So for example, as more wins are gained online, the greater the player's ranking will be.
Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the
Nintendo DS is slated to be released sometime in
November 2007. Featuring the classic arcade gameplay of
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and the
Puzzle Kombat mode from
Mortal Kombat: Deception, fans will be treated to online and local battles over
Nintendo's WiFi Connection.
