Your Predicted Tier 1 (confirmed character spoilers)

People people, don't start getting upset when others don't place your favorite character in Tier 1!

At this time all we can do is speculate, we are yet to see high-level play of any character (even the demo 4 have been balanced a lot). It will take at least a week or two to elaborate a comprehensive tier list. In the beginning newbie-friendly characters will dominate the online modes and after a while people will figure out each char's strengths and start using them accordingly.

This thread is amusing and fun, but it should be kept at that, it's all just speculations : )

Personally I'll play every character to see which one I'm best with, haven't played MK seriously in a while so I'm rusty, no idea which will be tier 1 for me

Only a week or two? I'd expect it to take longer. Is that usually how long it takes for tier lists to come out?

Fair enough, we will know either way in a couple of days :D

^ Wasn't upset, he had a differing opinion to everyone else's and I was wondering what he was thinking that no one else was. Were I paying attention to anyonee else's name, I would have asked the same. :D

I'll be sure to give Kabal a chance, and my tiers are most likely not final. I expect them to change dramatically ;)

Ermac will be up there I'm not sure why the people who made these lists so far have him low grade. Lupinko said he was beast and had really good telekinetic grabs and throws etc.

I've never played any fighting game outside of MK. Enlighten us on why diagonal fireballs are pretty amazing.

Just jumping back and throwing fireballs in the air can be effective in small doses because it basically creates a vertical wall your opponent has to deal with, but there are a shit load of other strategies to put an end to runaway tactics. Using them as your opponent gets off the ground after being knocked down is very effective as it forces them to block, then you can apply an offensive mixup as you land next to them while they are FORCED into the block. Becomes pretty annoying.

Whats frame-trapping?

Okay, I'll try to explain without actually going into frame discussion here.
Normally when a character uses any attack and it is blocked the person who blocked the move could react quicker than the person who attacked because the person who attacked is still in the ending-lag of his/her move. But there are some moves that have your character recover from his attack quicker than the person who blocked to get out of the block stun they endured from the attack. So basically the person who attacked with this move is still at the slight advantage even though the person blocked.

Frame trapping is using these certain attacks to trick your opponent into thinking they are open to attack so they do an attack themselves but you slap them out of it with your move. If you do these moves in succession it puts the opponent into a difficult situation because they are forced on the defense and have to see when it is a good time to backdash, hit with a crouchedjab to dodge a high, jump away, or do something clever.
Rufus and Akuma are examples of players who play like this in Street Fighter.

Hope you understood this.

It normally takes months [up to a year] for a real tier list to develop. Analysis and everything. [not taking into account tournament win statistics and the like]

The only real character I can guess at is Shao Kahn. If he is playable, he will certainly be high tier. [assuming he isn't banned if so] (Nah, I'm just kidding, if he is too bulky he'd probably be on a low tier]

Tier 1: Sheeva, Sheeva, Sheeva

Honestly though, we're seriously talking about tiers? When some of us have only been using the four demo characters? :P

Thanks for the diagonal fireball and the framing explanation, Circus. In case you're wondering, the framing explanation did make a lot of sense to a non-tournament player.

Just having fun with speculation. When I'm checking this thread months later, it'll be interesting to see who called it way back when no one had a clue. It's not like we're setting anything in stone here.

Serious guesses now:
High: Sub-Zero, Reptile [I think he'll be one of the best zoners in the game, fragile though], Kabal [maybe], Noob, and JC.
Middle [High]: Stryker, Raiden, Scorpion, Cyrax, Kano, Smoke, Baraka ... [Low] Ermac, Sektor, Quan Chi,...
Low: Sheeva [Unless she has new specials, or if she can cross a gap quickly, otherwise I think she'll be pretty much bottom.]
The rest I'm not too sure on.

On Shao Kahn, again, presuming if he is playable I think a few factors will determine his tier and whether he'll be broken or not:

1) If his Rhino Charge/Uppercut has the ability to cut through projectiles and the like... Wow, that'd be pretty much Top Tier. God tier pretty much.
2)Too bulky or just slightly. [The more bulky he is the more likely I think he'll be lower in tier, due to being pressured by faster characters or poked by the likes of JC]
3)If he can actually combo. XF I don't know why but if he is playable I find it hard to believe he'd be tall and able to maneuver with ease.

Haha, I see your point. :)

Hopefully they can make Sheeva playable and viable tournament-wise though. She's rock-bottom in all the MK3 tier lists, sigh.

what is up with all these Tier 1 stuff? Seriously any characters can be a beast if you know how to use them.

True, and that's always well-noted. However, people have always tiered the characters.
Here, for example...: http://ultimatemk.com/cguide.php?game=mk1arcade

Hilde was ridiculous, I think the Apprentice was high up there...

Anyways, I'm just going to take 3 guesses at some top tier.
Spoiler:
Nightwolf, Noob, Quan Chi

:( don't know anything about tiers but im just disappointed raiden has never been in a high tier in any mk game. he's meant to be the most powerful character in the mk universe after all

Why are people putting Stryker so low? If he plays like he did back in MK3, which I'm pretty sure he will, then he will surely be high-tier, whether you like him or not

Haha, most of these tier lists are super biased. There's no telling about the tiers yet, watching the gameplay doesn't mean much. So obviously people are simply gonna organize it from favorite to least favorite characters. I'm hoping Stryker, Sektor and Ermac are top tier. All I can judge on yet are characters in the demo, and Cage is by far the best there.

It's pretty hard to predict anything 99.9% accurate without the game released .... and basing only in gameplays videos and demo gameplay ....

To define a more or less "realistic" future Tier list, you need :

- Reach a decent skill level with all character, to a point you know how to play with each one, and not only the half dozen you like the most. This way , you can judge more or less what Tier Category (High, Middle or Low tier) every characters fit on.

- Have some amount of gameplay total hours in the game, to know game mechanic, combo system, strengh points and weakness points of each character.

- Have experience on online gameplay against players with same skill level as you, and against players better than you.

- Be sure the character you are judging , really fits certain Tier category, because of his/her characteristics and gameplay, and observing gameplay videos of players who "kick ass" pretty well with that character .... and not because you :

a) hate certain character, putting his level to Low Tier automatically
b) don't hate certain character, but, you have no skill with certain character move set and gameplay style, so, you never have interesting to go deeper with that character and automatically, you don't spend/waste time trying to learn that character's gameplay
c) You love some characters, this way, they are your High Tier chosen automatically ..... a totally biased judgment

For example, the fact you play bad with a natural middle tier character and cannot evolve with him/her even after hours and days of training , arcade ladder attempts and online versus, this doesn't make automatically the character low tier in common consensus agreement in the MK community , maybe only in your own personal opinion.

Some games if they have an active competitive community they get things like tier lists, Advance Tactics, and metagame things done really really fast.
Super Smash bros Melee competitively wasn't found until 5 years after its release, it was then that things like Wavedashing and L canceling were discovered pushing the tourny scene.
When Brawl came out immediately the community went in and advanced the tourny scene, within a month or so the first tier list was out and the metagame evolved at an extremely fast rate.
It all depends on how active the tourny community is as a whole and how well they push for the competitive edge.

Tier S: Kung Lao, Smoke, and Jax.

Tier A: Liu Kang, Scorpion, Ermac, Kitana, and Cyrax.

Tier B: Raiden, Sonya, Kano, Baraka, and Jade.

Tier C: Sektor, Johnny Cage, Noob, Sindel, and Kabal

Tier D: Mileena, Stryker, Nightwolf, Reptile, and Sub-Zero

Tier ?: Sheeva, Quan Chi

NOTE:
This is off moveset and personal popularity/assumptions.
Sheeva and Quan Chi are in their own bracket because I haven't seen gameplay to be sure where they stand power/gameplay wise.
