which characters MAKE Mortal Kombat what it is?

Scorpion and Sub-Zero. They are to MK what Ryu and Ken are to SF, the Mishimas are to Tekken, and the Yankees are to baseball; the undisputed stars of the series, and any statement to the contrary is a lie. In fact, their star power is so big that they are bigger than Mortal Kombat.

I consider myself the kind of MK fan that would buy it as long as it's the same universe. ALL characters are interchange-able to me and I'd still purchase it.

To me Mortal Kombat is a collection of stories. If you take out Sonya/Kano/Jax. The story could still continue, but a chunk of MK will be missing, but overall it's still MK. Much like taking a bite out of an apple. It's still an apple. It's just not in it's fullest form.

I think you can replace bit off pieces of this "apple" as long as it happens in stages. I'd be a bit unhappy if in one game the entire apple was eaten in one sitting, then the next game it's a brand new apple.

That's what MK is to me.

It's a combination of stories that create MK. Anybody can be dropped and it'll still be MK to me, because it's got plenty of other stories to keep it Mortal Kombat.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong.

There are plenty of characters I'd like to stick around for a VERY long time becasue I REALLY like them. but it's not the end all be all. if they are killed off.

You can't have game without both of these guys. Mk3 tried it, only having sub, and it just didn't feel right.

Lots of things don't feel right when you change them. Remember when Michael Jordan came out of retirement and wore the #45? Yeah...his face was still Michael Jordan, the word "Jordan" was still on the back of the Jersey, and the word "Bulls" was still on the front, but the 45 made the whole thing look out of place (although it wasn't the first time in his NBA career he wore a number other than 23; one time, he was forced to wear a makeshift #12 jersey without his name on the back in a game against Orlando because some douchebag snuck into the visitors locker room and stole his regular #23 jersey). So if there was anything I could compare Scorpion being excluded from a game's roster to, it would be Jordan's #45 jersey when he came out of retirement.
