Then I'd rather have them be off the game completely, to be honest. To have one of my favourite characters be an unplayable boss character would just make me feel frustrated about not being able to play as them.

Any one of the current roster could theoretically be Shang Tsung in shapeshifted disguise. They pulled it off once with Raiden.

I'm voting for Reiko, but i don't think it's going to be him. Also, i'm going to HATE if it's Mileena or Rain. I'd be ok if it's Liu Kang.

It won't be Shinnok. That we can say with almost 100% certainty.
I think Liu Kang and Raiden are the ones that make most sense. Especially Liu Kang. Everybody wants it. Plus there are like 10 reasons why it will likely be him I listed in a different thread like a week ago.
I could see Mileena and Reiko being it as well. However, if you further think about it time-wise, it wouldn't make much sense or match. I don't think Mileena/Reiko will be the main characters for the entire span of the game.
So, after we beat Quan-Chi and Shinnok, 5 years in, followed likely by Mileena/Reiko some more few years later, who else will be left based on what we know? Who will be the one "above" them so to speak?
There's also Fujin and Havik. Wild cards I guess. The more believable/possible ones anyway.
Then there is also Shang Tsung. What happened to him?
And Sindel. What happened to her?
And Shao Kahn. What happened to him?
3 evil veterans. Could one of them be back (again) as big bad? I could see them pulling it off somehow. It wouldn't be very original, but it's possible.
Out of those 3, the most interesting is Shao Kahn. I know he's been done to death. However, the way he could return could be very interesting indeed.
Where is Shao Kahn? Is he in some cage supervised by the Elder Gods? Is he in Ermac? Is he in Cyber Sub-Zero aka KL?
Or is he all these places in parts or has he been moving from one place to another?
If the Sub-Zero in the game is Noob Saibot... and Shao took over CSZ ,what or who would Cyber Sub-Zero be? Would he be also Sub-Zero? Or would they make Noob out of him? Or Shao Kahn? Or?
Or could it be Onaga again using different people as possesed puppets? Sub-Zero/Raiden/Kotal? Although I find it unlikely since the final boss should be just one character.
I hope Shaun isn't lying when he said the next big trailer should give us a hint.

I don't see Shang Tsung coming back until at least MK11. I guess after Sindel was killed, he was free from her body and he is somewhere in Outworld. I would imagine he is hiding in the shadows to make the perfect return after Quan Chi is dead and the Civil War in Outworld is over.
