Ultimate History Repeat?

We all love the MK series as a story and what it has offered to gaming. Back to 2D gameplay and old school combos, characters, arenas etc. have been brought back with new content as well. all of this has made all of us so hyped for the game. so now that the game is wrapping up and we now know the major new features, whats next?

i know that this will depend on how good the game's sales and reviews are but what do you predict will happen to the franchise as a whole? will they continue to make these types of 2D style games and maybe just add new features? whats your opinion? what would you like to see happen?

I remember in an interview, Ed said that he didn't want to focus solely on Mortal Kombat. So after this game We'll probably have to wait a good 5 years for a new MK. They'll probably work on the Grid and Smash TV remakes until then.

Hopefully MK 9 will have enough content to keep people happy for quite a while.
Much like Rockband 2, I hope that MK 9 is so enjoyable that I keep playing it for years to come.

yea hopefully. i guess ive only really seen this with mmos and some first person shooters but if this MK can do it with a fighter that would be sweet

i think i played one of the old ones haha it is pretty sweet. but i just dont know if a fighter can be the type of game to last for years but hopefully they prove me wrong

Well if it's the tournament level, deep fighting system, and secret riddled game that they make it out to be, I have no doubt that this will be played more frequently than any of the older ones. That is a bold statement, but I hope I am right

Well, if they really do what they are saying, supporting this game with patches and DLCs, maybe we can have a long-life game (ok, I just made this expression).

I really hope they can do this, then instead of focusing on a new game right after MK2011 ships, they could focus on other medias as well, and give us some good entertainment about MK better than the movies, the comics, series and cartoons we already have. That would be sweet.

In all honesty it's not up to ed boon or NRS. If Warner Bros. wants a new MK in 1 to 2 years then there will be a new MK. Warner Bros. pulled MK back from the brink after the fall of Midway and seem to be placing a fair amount of money on this brand. So again, if Warner Bros. says jump, NRS will have no choice to ask "How High"

if MK9 does have as much replay value as the rock band series, I will be playing MK9 for a long time

After every interview i've seen where Ed and NRS has had nothing but positive things to say about WB, I highly doubt they would be sos trict. I get what you're saying though, and obviously them being the publishers they do have final say. I just doubt they would ever say "we need another MK game in 1-2 years" or anything of the sort. They'd prob. just say "We'd like another MK game, take the time you need to make it even better than the last one, here's your budget, and try and get it done in around 2 and a half years etc.".

That's why I think all this WB hatred dude to their marketing is bit unwarranted. WB practically saved MK, and they are a much better publisher for MK than Midway was in it's last days. WB is staying hands off and letting NRS do their thing, and letting them have extra time in order to get the best quality possible. They demand a higher quality product, but aren't unreasonable about time constraints and due dates etc. They actually know what they are doing, and they are going to take MK to mucher higher places than it's been since the 90's.

The even more ironic thing is, is this would likely not even be the case if MKvsDC had not had happened. That small working relationship with WB was likely the reason why they showed interest in picking up MK in the first place. Many people were against the game, but without it, we'd either be seeing no MK, or a much lesser publisher picking it up and wouldn't have such great stuff coming our way as we do now. We got lucky.

So even those that may not like the marketing and promotional strategy we have now, you have to appreciate how good of hands MK is now. WB is a juggernaut, with tons of money and successful franchises. Whereas MK was basically Midway's last money maker, it's only one of MANY for WB. That's why they aren't pushing MK out the door to release the game as soon as possible, like Midway did, which decreased the quality and made the games suffer. They don't need to rush MK to survive.

Oh sweet God please let them remake The Grid and Smash TV. Some of the most underrated games ever...

I have no doubt that WB has been a great partner with NRS, but at the end of the day this is a capitalist economy. If MK 9 makes a decent amount of money, as it should, I have a hard time believing a company wouldn't see the green and push for another pay day. With that being said I agree that WB will let NRS take their time in making another MK if it comes to it, and do a little urging for some more dlc, but I highly doubt that they would wait 5 to 6 years to produce another MK game.

At the most I can see this being 3 years gaps. but all in all, i'm very impressed by WB.

Yeah, a 2-3 year gap is likely. That's probably their buffer zone. But of course, if the game is a HUGE success, it's going to have a sequel at the top of the pyramid so to speak. That's just smart business. Strike while the iron is hot, waiting 5-6 years is too long, and NRS isn't getting any younger.
