The best 2D fighting games of all time

I dont play much.. But i was a solid gamer back in the days when you could find alot of cool games in the arcades. I miss the days of the 2D fighting game.

What do you guys think are the best 2D fighting games of all time?

1) Mortal Kombat II
2) Mortal Kombat I
3) Street Fighter 2 champion edition
4) King of Fighters 2000
5) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Turtles in time

Would the original Super Smash Bros game for the N64 and its sequel fit in that category? They both had 2D gameplay although they both were rendered in 3D

As much as like, TMNT: Turtles in Time, I wouldn't count as fighting game along the lines of MK, which have emphasis on direct competition between human players.

Opportunities to play 2D fighting games were limited, I'm afraid. Growing up, MK and SF were the only series I consistently played.

I'm really looking forward to Skullgirls...but it's too soon for me to say anything.
