Sometimes the damage scaling in this game is incomprehensible.

The latest nonsense I've encountered is with Kenshi, who I just downloaded. Went into training with Auto Block on, to test combo on high blocking opponents.

Did jumping punch>Fwd+3>Rising Karma>Fwd+2, 2, X-ray. 35% damage. Cool, but I need to work on that, I tell myself.

Except I tried a simple jump punch into Fwd+3 into Xray, I get... 36%. how does that even make sense? Yes the damage scaling on the X-ray itself should be lessened in combos, but not to the point where a 3 hit combo with moves A, C and F do more damage than a 6 hit combo with moves A, B, C, D, E and F.

Sub-Zero has this combo that does 46%:
B+1,2 - Ice ball - NJP - Dash - B+1,2 - 2,1,4 - X-Ray

when this one does 48%:
2,1,4 - Xray

LOL!

Is just stupid but is how it is.

With Kenshi I like to do this combo (it does 40-something)

F2,2,B1 - 2,1 - Rising Karma - 2 - Xray

^Add JP at the begining to do more damage =)

The simple fact is that an xray combo has to be either simple, or completely ridiculous. For some reason, the moderately complex ones all suck.

I don't remember the exact combo, but one time with Ermac I did the same combo, one ending with normal projectile and the other with enhanced. I somehow lost 2% damage with the enhanced

This is because as the combo proceeds each hit does less and less and less damage, including x-ray's which is why resets are so annoying as the reset the damage decrease as a combo goes.

More hits doesnt always mean more damage in this game. You dont have to do a 12-13 hit combo to get the job done.Besides with the online lag simplier combos thats easier to be done are much better(less chances of being punished because you missed a hit...)

Combo's like Freddy's 8 hit 48% and Kratos 9 to 13 hit 71/77% and Cyrax 9 hit 54% ALL w/o X-ray still put a smile on my face when pulled of though I never use x-ray combo's lol I rely on my enhanced specials.

you are right kinda. Some fighters bars are best used for special and breakers but some have x rays that are worth using. X rays believe it or not are best used by themselfs in stiff situations or to go through projectiles as every x ray has armor so have more armor than others. I use my breaker alot and enhance moves that are nessesay. Reptile has amazing enhanced attacks and xray but sub zero has 2 good enchanced attacks but arent nessessay and his x rays the quickest in the game but doesnt have armor on start up.

The damage scaling caters towards noobs in this game. Skill is NOT rewarded, it's punished.

damn i remember when you were the cheery "hate the player, not the game" type of guy. now its just anger :/

but in a way i think damage scaling just needs to be made more sense.

more hits shouldnt = less damage ever imo

Uhh damage scaling has ALWAYS been like this. The more hits, the more scaling is applied, and since Xray combos scale the hardest, it is best to go with simpler combos as to maximize the damage when the damage scaling isn't going to destroy the xray. And combos using EN specials usually do more damage than xray combos anyway. (Not in every case but in most.)

Take Kabal or Shang Tsung's xray: if you do around a 12 hit combo and end it with xray, the scaling is already so much that it VASTLY reduces the damage. Yet if I do a combo with 3 specials using meter, the scaling won't be as bad.

I'm amazed that people are still obsessed with saving XRay when that bar can be put to use for far better use in a match.

EDIT: Even though some complex 12+ hit combos may only do slightly more damage than a simple 5-10 hit combo, combos also have a psychological impact on the other guy. It forces people to use breakers more. It makes the other guy fear you, as he doesn't want to get caught in a combo like that again, and it also a means of "showing off", like saying "that's how good I am".

Long combos also piss people off :P

Im not aware about the game mechanics of the game much, but I think this may be the reason why sometimes longer combos do lesser damage than shorter ones. It forces the opponent to use breaker more and use two bars. Maybe that could be the trade-off for lower damage as well.
