Seperate games set in different timelines.

I thought of something and I'm compelled to share it.

So NRS wants MK to evolve with an all new cast of characters, right? Clearly, a lot of longtime fans like my self aren't too keen on that idea, while others will be just fine with it and some actually want this to happen. So why not make two different MK games set in alternative universes and release them at the same time? One where the series mainstays like Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kitana, Nightwolf etc, are still alive and well, while the other game has them in the grave while new faces fight in their stead.

End result: Everybody goes home happy and Mr. Boon buys a new Ferrari.

I mean come on guys, the characters that got killed in mk9 were NO THROWAWAYS, these are iconic characters in the series and there's so many more stories that can be told with them.

I wouldn't say every character in MK9 was an iconic character......
Anyway I rather they invested their time in one game and perfect it rather than releasing 2 separate half assed games.
One thing I will say is that I would prefer that there would be less of a waiting period between games.

Also why is this thread in the MKX section? :/

So you want NRS to split the team, spend double the money and release two separate games? Would they be the same game but with different characters? What is this? Pokemon?

No, this is a very bad idea. The series needs to evolve. Moral Kombat moves faster than most other fighting games. They are on their 10th game while other series like Street Fighter are only on their 5th.

They cant keep releasing games with the same characters over and over again. They need new characters and new stories, the series needs to move forward, not stay in place forever.

One thing I will say is that I would prefer that there would be less of a waiting period between games.

And thats how Armageddon happened. You really want them to start half assing games again cause of a limited release schedule?

Seems like you could be T Trash's friend pathfinder since you guys are uber nostalgic.

Seriously though, the game can't evolve without new characters, since the story would feel too forced, and not have a natural flow.

Old characters in a new game? Sure!

Only old characters in a new game? You can play the old games.

Personally, all your latest posts seem to be rants about the new characters. You haven't even seen the story yet or given them a chance.

Ferra and Torr couls be lackeys, but at least they would be INTERESTING lackeys unlike Sheeva.

D'vorah's concept seems to be pretty cool, a woman who has control over insects.

Kotal Khan? Tell me how he ISN'T cool! Very promising so far!

Cassie Cage seems to be a cool no nonsense military woman although she has a sense of humor.

I bet if the new characters were the originals, you wouldn't be whining.

ALL franchises will have new characters wether you like it or not.

Go play the old games if you want nostalgia, I mean NRS just did a reboot for you oldie fans, and now you're asking them not to move on?

Damn.

/rant

I'm not against introducing new characters, but throwing away half of the more famous characters in the series in favor of an army of JarJars is a horrible idea.

Ferra/Torr and Dvorah both seem pretty JarJar-ish to me.

The second NRS forgets about MK's roots, the second the next MK ceases to be MK, but MK in name only... an empty shell of it's former self.

What if DC killed off Joker, Penguin, Harley Quinn, and Bruce Wayne so the Batman franchise can "evolve"? The fans of the series would be so shrill in rejecting the new iteration of the franchise that DC would slam on the brakes and FIRE every single writer working on the series while plotting an entire slew of retcons to get the series back on track... and I do believe something like that has actually happened with Marvel in recent years.

This ain't Game of Thrones people.

Making us wait 3 years in between games is too long. Releasing a Shaolin Monks style game in between the wait wouldn't cause any harm.

Nice job putting words into peoples mouths tho.

Armageddon came about because Midway had been bleeding cash like crazy since the turn of the millennium, and it eventually got to the point where not even MK's revenue alone could sustain the company for much longer. They legitimately thought that it would be the final MK game ever.

Dude seriously read your comment again...If you have been a fan of the series for a decade+ and you feel this way then you are delusional.
You really don't know how the MK verse works.
I hope you realize how asinine you sound.
None of the characters have been "thrown away," characters in MK die all the time, take a break for a game and then come back again in a following game.

Yea this isn't game of thrones brosef, this is MK and characters come back all the damn time, get over it.

I like when people immediately judge the new characters as "throw aways" when we haven't even gotten a chance to know them yet.

Brilliance, sheer brilliance.

I agree with those who want the team to stay focus on one game rather than splitting the team up in making various games. Sure there is a thing called "multitasking," but you try to work on multiple things with a deadline that comes so quickly, you'll swear just the other day was the beginning of creating the game.

I don't trust Netherrealm Studios to make more than one game at a time (excluding the whole mobile game they're working on now) I'm strictly referring to system games that will get more than just a few couple thousand to buy. After what happened to Armageddon, I feel like that is how the games will end up if there are more games that are to come out at the same time, you'll get half assed stuff.

There were a few games that I bought in the past that were half assed, I don't want to see Mortal Kombat be thrown into that list.

So you want an MK game every 1.5 years? This isnt Call of Duty. 3 years between games is fine. Why cant anyone be patient these days? Why do people want games released so quickly? You seriously want them to release games quickly and not care about quality? You want to pay $60 for tiny updates every year?

I agree with all of this

You act like that they will be dead forever :???:. If they stay dead in MKX then they are always likely to come back in MK11. Deadly Alliance killed off famous MK characters like Liu Kang, Jax, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao and Kitana.

Also they kept mainstays like Scorpion and SZ and Raiden and probably all the original 7 plus shinnok Mileena and Tanya are in so why do you keep on complaining? Who ar the other mainstays? Kitana won't be gone for long for sure, maybe even as DLC, same with KL.

every 2 years is about what it should be. not every year like cod and not 4 year waits. 3 years is kinda long to wait.

and also, its good that the series is moving forward. I don't think we want mortal kombat x, 12, or 25 to have all the exact same characters as mk9.

Or, as Reptil3 mentioned, why can't some of these dead characters stay dead until MK11?

Jax, Sindel, Styrker and Nightwolf are THROWAWAY characters can stay dead, for all I care, and this coming from someone who mained Nightwolf in MK9.
Kitana and Kung Lao can come back as DLC for MKX for all I care, but they have NO relevance to the story in MKX, as far as I'm concerned.
Even in MK9, they were just fodder / filler characters in story mode.
Kabal is another one who doesn't really have much story relevance for MKX and was another fodder / filler character.
Kotal Kahn is the new Nightwolf, IMO, and quite frankly I'm surprised that no one else has mentioned the possibility of Kotal Kahn being a former rival of Nightwolf, given that Apaches and Aztecs were at war with each other in the 1830s thru 1850s, in Mexico.

throwing away half of the more famous characters in the series in favor of an army of JarJars is a horrible idea.

Assuming that the new characters will all be a bunch of JarJars is ignorant and close-minded.
I guess that Quan Chi and Kenshi are JarJars too, huh?
All characters had to have started out somewhere, even MKII and MK3 favorites started off as unknown territory in their prospective debuts.
Just because you don't like 4 of the possible 11+ NEW MK characters, doesn't mean that all the characters are a bunch of garbage.

Since when did MK9 or MKX imply NRS forgetting about MK's roots?
Brutal Fatalities, the fighting game mechanics and all the "roots" of the original MK games seem to be in MKX.
You want to look at forgetting its roots? Look no further than MKvsDC.

MK9 was the reboot game for all the hardcore MK fans, and that's fine, but constantly doing the same shit over and over again and not pushing the franchise forward is also terrible.
Every single character that died isn't needed for MKX, and killing off Joker and Bruce Wayne is a horrible example as NRS isn't likely to kill off its 2 main characters (Scorpion and Sub-Zero) for good.
Also, as long as they have Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden and Liu Kang in, the rest of the roster is pretty much interchangeable as previous games have proven.
I'm a HUGE fan of MK1, MKII, MK3, UMK3 and Trilogy as well, but I also wouldn't want to see NRS being held back (creatively) in going forward with a new story, just because I want a nostalgia trip, and want to be stuck in the 90s.

When did I say I wanted a game every year? And when did I say I wanted to pay "60$ a year for tiny updates".. I said I wanted a spin off game.. Again, nice job at putting words in peoples mouths.

All I'm saying is releasing a spin off game during the three year wait would be nice. It certainly wouldn't cause an Armageddon again.

Why are you so obsessed with having a three year wait? You could get seperate people working on a spin off. Then it wouldn't take anything away from the normal games. What's the problem?

Injustice was also made to fill that void.
I agree, though, and I would also love a spin-off game in-between.

While I agree with you in having a spin-off, I also get where he's coming from.
I would also hate to see MK become an Assassin's Creed type of situation, where a game is pumped out every year, and thus it would be an MK overload.

I never wanted a game every year! Having one game in between the three years is not having a game every year. Maybe they could release the spin off two years after MKX. It could even give them MORE time to work on the actual games. Because people will be preoccupied with the spin off.

And I don't accept injustice as a way to tide us over. I play Mortal Kombat.

This!
no offence to anyone who likes cheesy comics and lame outdated superhero movies but that's just not my thing at all, I'm a manga guy.
I can't stand Injustice for a number of reasons
- I can't stand these cliche, cheesy, outdated, mongoloid cartoonish characters
- Storylines
- Censorship

I would prefer a shorter spin off game similar Mythologies or shaolin monks to tie us over :)

And I don't accept injustice as a way to tide us over. I play Mortal Kombat.

As do I, but I was talking about the fighting game fans, in general.
NRS working on a separate series = them working on something else that allows the previous MK some time to breathe.
I would also like a spin-off, but that's my point.
