Roster Speculation

True, but we have to remember.. it's easier to cling to what we know. It's safer.. and we know what we're getting, we are comfortable with the old roster and as far we know nothing could be better. But do you remember when guy's like Reptile and Noob or Ermac and Mileena were new to Mortal Kombat??.. Remember playing as Kung Lao for the first time? Most people now a days can't think of having an MK game without some of those characters in it as they have become canon and staple characters in the series, but there was a time they were completely new. There was a time they took a risk and created those characters.. we have to have faith that Ed and company will create new characters that we love. Ones that will fit the universe and become staple like so many of the characters we love today that were created from scratch. Yes SF3 is an example of what could go wrong with creating new characters but that is just the worst example and is what people bring up when there nervous or scared at the prospect of a new roster. Lets put a little faith in them to try something new, who knows, maybe we'll have an MK2 rather than an SF3 so to speak.

I agree with you !! I also want them to bring back JOHNNY though lol I was very dissapointed when they took him out of mk3.I think a lot of us want new character but we don't want them to throw away a lot of the old..

Stryker, sheeva,Kabal and noob saibot can be thrown away as far as I'm concerned lol

I'm of the mentality that new characters have to EARN their stripes. Characters such as Meat, Hsu Hao, and Mokap have had a short shelf life for a VERY good reason, just as characters such as Scorpion, Raiden, and Quan Chi have stood the test of time for a good reason.

I like that...they have to earn their stripes..cool.

I think it'd be a good idea if NRS introduced the new characters in a new game as supporting NPC's in the previous game.

I.e. say Kotal Khan helped plan things or whatever in MK9. This way, the new characters get exposure and won't get as much beginning hate as new playable characters (remember the negativity at first).

It's extremely difficult to earn stripes when there is little to no creative process or intent to further stories to eventually become main characters. It's a great concept in theory, but there's no guarantee the three "legacy" characters you mentioned would have made it if they had debuted in Deception. It was just not a good period for the series in terms of story design or execution...or even purpose.

At the end of the day, new characters will only be as important as NRS makes them. To me, Quan Chi is the most recent truly great MK character that has gotten due story and purpose since debuting in Mythologies...and his first appearance in a true MK fighter was seventeen years ago.

I get the need for legacy characters to move units, but the hardcore fan in me is starting to wear thin on seeing the same characters for 20 years. I would have been more than content if this MK had brand new characters across the board with optional legacy DLC packs to satiate those who require familiar faces.

Find me a mass audience who is willing to shell out $60 of their hard-earned money on a roster reminiscent of SF3. Seriously...

Did you even read my post? I acknowledged that much.
I stand by what I said in totality about new characters having to earn their stripes. If they don't pass muster with the people buying the game, they should be 86ed. Simple as that.

I guarantee a Mortal Kombat game delivering a roster similar to SF3 would still sell well. If Mortal Kombat is written on the box and Scorpion is involved in some way - people will eat it up.

SIDE NOTE: Mortal Kombat is the game series I grew up with that still means something to me. I highly expect Kitana and Mileena to return. An alternative trailer of those two fighting would be so far out I'd be all like, "Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?!" Yeah, Kitana will probably be Quan Chi's sex toy until the good guys knock some sense into her zombie ass and return her as rightful Queen of Edenia. (If Kitana and Mileena don't make the cut, there is no hope for humanity. Well, there is no hope for humanity regardless, but I really, really, really want Kitana and Mileena in MK X.) Anyway, here's my guess:

SCORPION
SUB-ZERO
CASSIE CAGE
D'VORAH
FERRA/TORR
KOTAL KAHN
KITANA
MILEENA
REPTILE
RAIN
TANYA
SONYA BLADE
KANO
RAIDEN
NOOB SAIBOT
ERMAC
JADE
CYRAX
SEKTOR
SMOKE
SKARLET
SHEEVA
NITARA
ASHRAH
QUAN CHI
SHINNOK

The rest will be new characters until DLC.

There. Now that's a good suggestion.

4 returning and 15 new (or whatever the number was) is completely unacceptable!

Not if those 4 are Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang and Raiden (the 4 most iconic characters in ALL of MK).
Aside from those 4, NRS has proven countless times that the rest are completely interchangeable.
**Cough*Cassie Cage*Cough**

And before anyone counters with "MK3 Scorpion" or "MK: DA Liu Kang"......

MK3 Scorpion wasn't in because Daniel Pesina (the actor who played him) was fired.
He was quickly rectified 6 months later in UMK3, when John Turk put on the ninja costume, following the Scorpion shit storm.
Liu Kang also was quickly rectified as a zombie in Deception, with his human alt being unlockable, likely also from fans being upset that he was killed off in Deadly Alliance.

No....count me out..only 4 original characters???if that's the rout they go I'm out .

That's trying way to hard to get us into something new .i sure hope that was a guess.im already upset about cage possibly not returning.

This. This is basically what I want. Also, thank you for adding more females to the mix. I'm a bit tired of seeing character lists with a bunch of men and, like, only three females.

Personally, there should be a lot more classic characters than there are new ones.

No, that's not what I meant.
I'm not saying that they would do that.
I'm merely stating that those 4 (especially Sub-Zero and Scorpion) are the must haves for ANY MK game.

Just as an example - Johnny Cage and Mileena weren't in MKvsDC but those 4 were in along with a few other MK characters, and people still got it, which is my point.

You can put those 4 (Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Liu Kang) among a mixed roster of a few other returning MK characters + new faces, and it will sell.

That's why you build around proven characters. That's what sells the game.

Yeaaa I really hope they don't throw all the older characters away..I still want the new guys but damn..I don't care to have 14 new characters..

I wouldn't mind 10 returning faces and 14 new ones (Ed said that the silhouettes are just place holders for now).
Plus, there's also DLC to consider.
You have to remember that SOME things from the MK4 thru MK: D era may happen, but Ed also stated that MK X will have an original story.

I don't think they keep many of the old characters. Some are dead and some others (because of the new storyline) don't have reason to join the kombat (ie Li Mei with deadly alliance never created, Kobra and Kira never been recruited by Kabal,...).

There are some events too...
- There are significantly less characters in activity in the time of armageddon so Orin have no reason to awake Taven and Blaze have no reason to be activated for the final kombat.
- With Shao Kahn not killed by deadly alliance, Reptile never been wandering and sent by Nitara to the Dragon egg. So Onaga never been resurrected.
