PS3 Harddrive

I have not played my PS3 much in a long time because I'm stuck with the crappy 40 gig harddrive. I'm looking to replace my PS3 harddrive but to avoid any problems doing that I was wondering is there a specific model or something harddrive that would be good for my PS3? I know they pretty much use the same kind as a laptop but not sure what would be the best choice. Sooner I replace my harddrive the more I'll be able to start playing my PS3 again.

You can always upgrade your HDD. I seen a 160GB Hard Drive Upgrade Set for $70 on Amazon.com.

Off-Topic: Post #300. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should be looking at the 2.5" HDD range, preferably ones that run at 5400 RPM. Stick with known brands such as Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung.

Looks like the best choice. I may never run out of space! LOL

I have an external can't I just back up everything onto that and transfer it onto the new hard drive? Or is there more to it?

No you can do that. That's what I did when my 80g PS3's Blu-Ray drive died.

you can backup everything else on ur ps3 except Games and PSN content U have to redownload those by going to da ps store and "downloads"

Everyone above is correct so you basically back up all your saves, etc to that external drive. There is actually a Backup feature you can use to do this. Here's the guide:

Then after swapping the drive restore the backup and download anything you are missing from the Store menu.

** Please avoid other brands other than Western Digital if at all possible. After Seagate bought out Maxtor, the company's quality has been seriously lacking. I had 3 Seagate hard drive failures to every 1 Western Digital. (Computer Repair Business) ***

*** In order to use an external hard drive to backup your PS3 you will need to ensure it is formatted in FAT32. How to do this is outlined in the above Backup / Restore tutorial link. ***

*** I recommend NewEgg.com or TigerDirect.com for purchasing computer components. I've used both for years and have not found better resellers.

I hope these links help and please feel free to contact me if you need ANY help during this process, as I have done this for my own PS3.

Sorry Empress but I am no help here. But I do have a question, sometimes Mortal Kombat runs bad on my PS3. I heard some others saying to just put MK9 on your hardrive or something of the sort. Anyone here that can tell me how to do that? Thanks in advance.

I have MK for both 360 and PS3 and I'm quite sure you can't install MK9 onto the PS3. I know you can on 360 but I don't remember there being a option for it on the PS3.

Pretty sure that the game automatically installs itself to the ps3 hdd. I'm not positive, but considering the amount of game save data (nearing 4 gb) it almost has to be an auto install.
