PC version of Mortal Kombat 9...

Now that you mentioned, every time that definition pops up ( "a super kid friendly game" ), I remember MK vs DC... Total utter idiocy.

MS wants to make money, nothing more, apparently. And they will, cause kids are very easy to manipulate in what they should like or not like, in terms of games. With the proper marketing strategy, the game will probably sell pretty well, despite the fact that it's a digital piece of crap.

When the kids grow up a bit and are allowed to play MK9, they won't be able to help but laugh their ass off to the fact, that they were oblivious enough in the past to play such a lameass game.

Well let's not bury the game just yet as actual gamer impressions were fairly good but to be honest I don't think this game will stand the test of time. Looking at the graphics apart from the nice particle effects KI looks like a current gen game so if the gameplay is good it has a chance to be successful but eventually Street Fighter 5 and Mortal Kombat 10 will arrive and I'm sure what we see today is nothing compared to how those will look.

Baes on the game's current state I think the best option one can do is just firing up MAME and playing the original Killer Instinct there. Oh and listening to the great theme song:

The original KI was more cartoony than MK was in my opinion. CGI Cartoony but cartoony nevertheless. I mean.. the characters never looked like real people like MK did. It was also tamer in its fatalities.. err... I mean no mercies... it was dark for Nintendo though.

Also, the home version of KI1 was dreadful in the graphics department. The SNES could not handle that game.... even less than MK. :P

As for that new KI I don't like the look of Jago and I'm probably never going to play it since I'm never getting an Xbone. That's all I gotta say about it.. no sense me fretting over it otherwise. It did make me feel like firing up MAME and playing the original though. I just wish I could make it widescreen and have stereo sound.... at least for the music. Like replace the music with the music from the CD that came with the home game.

Hehe, just fired up MAME to play KI after at least 10 years and wow I suck. :DD Played for about half an hour, couldn't win a single fight. :D Guess an Xbox controller sucks for this game or I just forgot how to play. Nevermind, I'll get back into it if I keep playing, it's just sooo different than everything else. Also it's just sad to see how low res the game is. :(

As for the style of the game yes it's a bit toned down compared to Mortal Kombat, I never had a problem with that. My problem is that the new version just looks like Street Fighter IV, it really does and even gives back a bit of the same anime feel. That's bad, the original game was very unique because the characters looked just like you were watching a Harryhausen movie with all the stop motion and the general "monster galore" roster of fighters. The new game just left this behind and it's a shame. For example Sabrewulf looked like a werewolf from a horror with his creepy stage and the blood spilling out from his mouth in the second game but now you could even believe he's just a regular wolf who has some human features simply because it's in a cartoon. :D

I'll go with a bit of both. You are a tad out of practice and the 360 controller sucks for that game. I played it today too and I tried both the 360 pad and my old fight stick (the one I used to play fighting games on the SNES with) and I could pull off combos with the fight stick as if I was back in the arcade again.. not so with the pad. I do remember all the moves and all the main combos for each character though. :)

KI has a street fighter'ish layout so it's best to play at least with a 6 button stick.... or a pad with a 6 button on the face layout and a good d-pad if you must.

BTW, the game is low res now in emulation especially if you use no filters but it looked high res on the original 25 inch RGB monitor it ran on! It's because it ran close to that monitors native 512x384 resolution.

KI was always Meh, for me. I don't know why. In a nutshell,I sat down at the arcade when I was a kid, I picked Jago and the announcer was so loud...JAGOOO I nearly pissed myself. The fighting was ok and it was more fun for me to watch people play.
But it was so over the top and good fun :)

You know what is something I didn't like about KI? When it was brand new in the arcades people in my area where so in love with it that they where dissing MKII. It wasn't until MK3 and its dial-a-combos that they started liking MK again. But yeah, MK got a lot of disrespect when KI was new at the arcade I used to go to.

Hi!
I'm a long time reader of this topic but it is my first post here. I'm here every single day to look at your posts and eventually find out if there are some news regarding MK.
I finally decided to register and post this message so you could know that there is one more person in this world that was sharing your feelings in times when the announcment of MK was not sure.(probably noone cares but whatever :D )
Im looking forward to play with you guys :)

Welcome! I am kinda new too.
Can't wait for the game and hoping for some news soon.

I never knew how to play KI so there was not much to forget to be honest. :D I always loved the characters and that's why I played it sometimes at the arcade (and being in an arcade was a rare thing in my country sadly, now they are nonexistent). I always managed to win some fights but I don't really know the special moves and have no clue about the combo system.

Anyway the almost nothing I knew about the mechanics came back and now I'm winning the first three fights but it's very hard without the knowledge of combos in a fighting game that is all about combos. :D

I've got a question. Will the retail version of MK be also a steam version but boxed and with additional physical content? I'm asking because I want to have it physically but I also want to connect it with steam. (steam is more important)

It's exactly how you think.

Thank you for the answer. I had to be sure. :)
I will probably get the retail version because I will not be in my country in july anyway :)

Here's the thing. Each character has one or two large predefined combos but as you get up the ladder the CPU starts breaking them more and more making them more and more useless and making the smaller combos and single hit special moves much more vital. Stuff like charge back, then press forward and hit a button... pres the button diagonal to it (on a 6 button layout) while charging back again then press forward and a different button to finish the combo. But sometimes they don't even let you get that in.

*edit*

Also, when it came to competitive play at the arcade as people got better at breaking combos they also became increasingly useless and smaller less breakable combos where more useful.

Smoke, that's strange, for me it was the opposite. The older audience were all over MK2, the younger ones played KI more.

Interesting, at my arcade at the time the MKII machines where all pretty much deserted and they started converting them to other games. It was the beginning of sad times for those machines.

For some reason, as of right now, when you search for "mortal kombat" on Steam, no results show up at all. The Arcade Kollection and its trailer used to pop up until now, now they are gone too. I tried searching for "Warner" and it listed all their other games, so the script is working.

Perhaps they are editing the database with the new MK listing and that is why the search isn't showing anything right now?

It is showing for me on my phone but in pop-up style. Under the searching box.
But when i click to search it shows "no results for mortal kombat"!

Omg i hope that you are right we are going crazy here lol

Lets play "Guess the price"?
You guys need to post price you think game will cost on Steam.
My guess is 30 or 40 euros. But i think it will be 30e.

Hello everyone!

Decided it's time to say hi here because I've been reading & checking this post every day for months now. I've never played MK9 because I never owned a PS3 / X360 but soon I'll be in able to play my favorite game on PC and I'm very excited for it. I've been Mortal Kombat fan from ever since I can remember. Gonna roll with Rain / Ermac / Noob Saibot as main fighters most likely.

Add me on Steam if you want to. See you online!
