But you're right, zoning isn't strictly about projectiles. I forgot about Dhalsim
Marth's sword in SSBM is considered zoning as well.
Spacing can be approach or retreat, while zoning is only the retreat.
If I dash forward and jab to catch you running away, I spaced my jab to hit you on the retreat. you can't say you zoned with your jab in this scenario.
If you back dash to avoid an attack then jab them out of the air, you zoned them out with your jab. basically you're maintaining a specific amount space between you and your opponent, usually out ranging their approach.
Zoning is just the opposite of approaching. Both use Spacing, one's for retreating, ones for closing in. throwing projectiles to stay away is a form of retreating aka zoning.
