Word is buzzing around the rumor mill that Midway's relentless schedule of one new Mortal Kombat each year is keeping the Mortal Kombat series from transitioning to the next generation consoles, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3. While the MK team has been somewhat distracted by the completion of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, work has been ramping up on the next Mortal Kombat fighting game. During the transition from the current generation to the next, games will still be developed for both generations at the same time, as with previous generation transitions. The next Mortal Kombat will most likely build upon the existing fighting engine from Deception/Deadly Alliance and also expand Deception's Konquest mode. While this information is still mostly rumors, the prospects of the next Mortal Kombat fighting game to stay on current generation consoles is a very likely scenario.

As long as its playable on the 360 thats fine with me. I know the 360 will only be able to play the best selling Xbox one games but surely from now on they will make every game backwards compatible.

Hopefully its a MK trilogy type game...and there is no breaker system.

thats good to hear....i really want a new deception type game hopefully with older characters instead of stupid new ones like cobra and hotaru. I loved Konquest, so i hope that is as good as deceptions.

I guess I'm the only one here who doesn't like the sound of that, then. I was hoping the next game would have a new engine and everything, which most likely wouldn't be the case if they keep it on current-gen consoles. Damn, I was really looking forward to seeing MK optimized for this new technology coming out.

I do agree with you, it would be most beneficial to see MK take advantage of the next-gen hardware. I had this vision of a near photo-realistic MK game, imagine MK2 looks but 3D and way improved. It would take a lot of work, and that doesn't fit into the gameplan for a MK game every year. So hopefully with this game getting completed sometime next year, they'll have the development time of MKSM2 to work on a Next-Gen MK game, we'll just have to wait. This could also be beneficial because of the advancement of the next-gen consoles to the point where the programming/development tricks are more well known so maybe it wont take as long. Time will tell to see what Midway has up their sleeves.

amen to that mate!!! its always good to have new c haracters, but not so many at one time that they overshadow the classic characters.

I agree with DeathCore and Patrick. I really wanted to see a highly-detailed engine. Oh well, maybe there just following the cycle (Mortal Kombat 1 or Mortal Kombat 2 never counts in the cycle)

MK3 - Engine 1
UMK3 - Engine 1
MKT - Engine 1
MK4 - Engine 2
MKG - Engine 2
MKDA - Engine 3
MKD - Engine 3
MKA - Engine 3

AAABBCCC is the mortal kombat cycle. Maybe its going to be 3 games with the same engine, then 2, and then three, like 323232323.

I'm just bored. Anyway, on topic, yeah, I agree with Patrick. As much as I like the Deadly Alliance/Deception Engine, I wanted to see some new dimensions introduced.

You know how Midway and Epic have a deal, i heard that the next MK will have the Unreal 3 engine. It would kick so much ass if that did happen.

Also if you played Unreal Championship 2 and played on Raidens ladder, MAYBE we could see Sazlor (the person Raiden picked to come with him to kombat in Earthrealm) in that game.
