Mortal Kombat HD Remix with MUGEN

Wow, over 50% of your porfolio is made of unfinished work. It shows different levels of talent, for example the walking animation of the lava monster is cheap. You should really put some effort at least in making a portfolio if you really want to work at this, and I'm telling you this because nobody else seems to be willing to say it. You cannot live out of the possitive comments of MK mugen fans and hope to find a real job after visiting the E3.

Hell, I'm gonna say it because somehow I care about your situation: you really need theraphy first to improve your behaviour, and I mean the attitude of leaving things unfinished (quitter). That seems to be destroying everything around you until the point you hide yourself and your obvious talent in a mugen forum.

If you find this post disgusting, well at least I tried to tell you something I think you need to hear, and I'm being dead serious. You need to organize your life before perceiving any results. Even the portfolio is a mess... Okay, just know I'm being hard critical because I think you could actually do it, if you REALLY try. Good luck...!

Thanks it's a good critique, I see your point. Getting to a finished level when I do everything is a problem though. When I see other artists Portfolios, they tend to focus on one or two things. Nothing is really "finished" to where you can stick it in a game or a movie just like that. They do their part of the job and that's about it.

Modeling, Animation, texturing, lighting, Etc. I have a little bit of everything and could be finished depending on what the job calls for.

I don't want to take every single thing all the way either. I'll practice different things depending on what comes to mind.

That's one problem I have and a reason I jump around a lot, there isn't just one thing I do.

If I got a job, that's what I'd like to do I think, work on different things.

Since I like to do everything, it's a good idea to have more work filling that description. Textured and animated, ready to stick in a game.

Your work is amazing bleed. I'm guessing the only reason you dont have a design job yet is because you're not marketing yourself. You definitely have the talent...you're good at all aspects of design, modeling, animation, texture, etc.

Have you checked out www.3docean.net ?

You can sell premade 3d work, might be the quickest way to earn some extra income.

Okay, a portfolio is not a collection of what you've done in your spare time, it is a demostration of your maximum capacity, so, you should try making some drawings exclusive for that portfolio, and not just one character with an empty background, try making the very best you've ever done, imagine a company requested something like this from you already:

Also, try to adapt yourself to ofice work demands like working under pressure, delivering things over a deadline and being fast. This last thing is pretty important, just pic any character, Zangief if you like and finish all of his moves in one month. Trying to finish a character each month should be a challenge and a way to get pro. The better you become, the harder would be to ignore you.

The deadlines thing is the biggest issue. You've got to be good AND fast. Being good alone is pointless to today's modern day art pipeline. Unfortunately Lighting, Rigging, Texturing, Animation are all considered production jobs. Not necessarily considered creative. With production you are basically judged by how quickly you are able to reach the creative/art director's vision.

As a for instance, if you were strictly an animator then you'd be expected to produce at least 3 animations with Scorpion per day. Those animations would then get put into a review que. Feedback would be given by the end of the day so that you could make tweaks and send them back out until your creative manager was satisfied.

There are alot of talented but slow folks out there. Honestly I don't think speed will be your issue. You created Baraka in zBrush overnight. So your modeling skills are at a very high level. But Scorpion is taking quite a bit more time. Maybe you don't enjoy animation as much?

You should challenge yourself since this is all going to be good for your portfolio. Try to do one Scorpion animation every 2 days. It is great practice.

I disagree with CARZ about your portfolio. Having a portfolio is a huge first step. It doesn't matter that the work is "unfinished". Would it help if it were finished? Absolutely. But I'd grade your portfolio on par with that of a talented student right out of college. You won't start out making alot of money but I KNOW you can get a job in the games industry. It all comes down to marketing yourself. Letting the right people know that you are looking.

I think we talked about this once before but have you actually tried Netherrealm? I can't imagine they'd ignore you at this point.

I did contact NRS yesterday, not looking specifically for an artist position. Since they don't advertise for regular jobs on their site, I asked if there was anything available for someone starting out, and I'm not expecting a reply.

Usually what they look for are people with several years of experience and AAA shipped titles. Starting work as an Artist is near impossible from what I can tell, you have to know someone already in the company, start by doing something random, be crazy good or get lucky.

The work at home mind set is hard to get in to, I am easily distracted, but I understand it's value.
Freelance is not my thing right now, I need that pressure from being around others expecting me to produce something. Without it I relax too much...

Okay, I know what you mean because I am sort of similar in my own stuff... want some pressure? Use self pressure: Commit in public to finish Scorpion in 10 days for example and let people following your progress during that time as if fans were people you own something. Do your very best to deliver in the given time, take 2 days off and set a new commitment with Cage.

If you start playing serious, you'll get a shit load of emotional support from everyone in here, because all of us want you tu succeed.

calactyte : Goro Looks amazing! i can't wait to see him in action.
MrMos3s : Fixes in Goro looks pretty much perfect!
Bleed : About the 3D job you are looking, i recommend you enter to a small place for a year or so, you know sometimes big studios don't want artist without experience in the videogame industry if they are getting old. So youo need to do some experience somewhere.

Ok ok, I'm going to take the advice and break this routine that's taking me no where. I have doubt about my ability to focus but I have to think positive.

I really appreciate the honest feed back, I need to be slapped with the truth from time to time and wake up. If not I get too comfortable where I am.

Okay, now everyone is looking at you. We all want to see that commitment, and when you get your bloody job come back and say hello to us, mortals, or something.

Focus tonight, tomorrow and the day after, fill a daily report of what you're doing and do not come here with like 5 different projects/drawings. Let us know okay? Routine/personality changes are not easy, is like losing a lot of weight or quit smoking. It takes some serious effort and time.

Bleed, I want to see Cage and Scorpion on my desk by tomorrow morning or we're going to have a talk in my office!

Oh snap!

k, well I'm working on Scorpion's animations, and I got another jab done. I'm doing some final tweaks now, and it's already coded.

So all punches are done, right? I think it would be sweet to see mid and high kick, plus roundhouse next. Love MK1 ninjas front rounhouse kicks.

How long would it take you to do all 3 kicks suggested by la_luna? We want them really close to the original and really quick. You can use this as a personal speed/quality test.

Will be interested in seeing the kicks and how quickly/accurately you can create them. I totally understand the losing focus thing. You basically get bored and move to learning new things that interest you. You and I are alot alike in that respect Bleed. But the difference is that my skills are marginal at best. I work in advertising as a creative director for my day job. But someone with your talent to be working retail is
criminal. So if you can break through and work on getting fast you WILL be hired. I have seen folks with far less talent get game jobs.

I got 3 jabs that were missing done tonight, so that's all of them.

Kicks are next

Really nice so far, good work.

Looks like you ran in to the same problem I did with the normal map on the neck.

I think it's better to have all the skin parts on the same sheet to avoid the seam in the first place.

If there is another way, I'd like to know.

the same thing I was goint to ask you bleed... lol, I'm almost handing liu kang, as soon as I feel satisfied with the hair and eyes, I wanted to rigg him but if I rigg him I would like to put muscles and things like that so it looks more realistic.

Nice job on the hair!! Not sure if this is possible but can you apply a turbo smooth to add segments. Up close the hair looks a bit jagged.

As for the seam, I don't think it will be visible in game and can be painted out for the character portrait. I do agree that not having the seam at all is the best bet.
