Mortal Kombat 1 General Discussion Media Thread

It should have been Rocksteady after that suicide squad garbage but yeah NRS are next if their next game doesn’t deliver.

Another studio gets rekt under WokeBros "leadership".

All I can say is NRS should watch their backs once in a while....
Player First Games deserves it after that F2P bullshit. Fuck that garbage.
The Monolith one hurt a bit especially considering that the Nemesis System sounds cool and they were likely going to implement it into the Wonder Woman game, which piqued my interest.

For now, NRS are safe, though.

"We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises -– Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones."

So, Injustice 3 has a decent chance of happening if that's the case, and then the cycle will likely repeat again with Mortal Kombat 13 / MK2 after that.
If anything, I'm kinda hoping that Rocksteady either does a Shaolin Monks type of game or a Batman game. If it's anyone that could make a decent MK action-adventure game, it's definitely them.

They won't be fine if they'll release another underperforming slop. Remember the game is just part of the MK franchise that WB owns.

The rumor mill has been claiming a stand alone Batman Beyond game is in the works from Rocksteady for a while now. As far as NRS goes I doubt we will hear anything from them after T 1000 until 2027 at the earliest.

Yeeep. Pretty much. I really doubt they will be making any more KP content for MK1. Not after the current performance. MK1 is selling half of what MK11 sold by Year 2. And WB sure as hell don't like seeing that on their graph.

Eh, I have my doubts on content being cut short as I think the more recent Fornite collab and MK2 movie news could have re-ignited some of that fire.
Like, we're getting an additional Madam Bo kameo coming (as she looks fun as hell) on the 18th with T-1000, Season 2 of the Pro Kompetition, and they've been adding more and more palettes for DLC characters and different skins for kameos in the Invasion Seasons. They just had MK11 kameo Cyrax and MK11 kameo Sektor for this Season.

Like, don't get me wrong, I'm not getting my hopes up for additional content, but I DO think that there could be a chance that they add more stuff down the line, especially with the whole bit about them supporting "Harry Potter, DC and Mortal Kombat."
It's seemingly much easier and cost efficient for them to release DLC and additional skins, stages and palettes for the current game than having to do a whole new game from scratch.

I am basing my assumptions on sales data and the fact that James Gunn talked with NRS (and dude is busy rebuilding DC brand, so MK is the least of his interests).

Also competitive scene this year will be the last indicator about the interest in MK1. Cause casuals don't care for MK1. There is nothing for them to do there. Now it is just another fighting game focusing on niche audience. So Pro scene is the only thing that might keep lights on. While pro players like Sonic Fox are screaming about massive interest, we shall see how EVO numbers will do this year.

If it ends up at the bottom again, then it is bah bye.

Madam Bo on other hand is just an afterthought. You have to understand, that the only people who show interest in this stuff is the people that own MK or are MK fans. For your average casual, they couldn't care less. MK1 has nothing to offer to bring in the casual from outside MK circle. NRS fanbase being toxic as hell, doesn't help either. So it can be Floyd or Madam Bo. It is irrelevant. Unless the game starts offering content, worth buying the game for your average player this franchise is going nowhere.

MK1 and KP1 sales went "okay," not as good as MK11 sales, but enough to warrant releasing Khaos Reigns.
NOW, Khaos Reigns on the other hand in where it went horrible in sales.............Be it the guest choices, the gender-swap with Cyrax and Sektor (which was an issue for some people) or the general story writing which not many liked.

This is why I think that IF (key word) there is more DLC post-T1000 that it'll be a small KP (no story) similar to the KP2 with Rain, Mileena and Rambo for MK11.................Essentially, a small pack with 2 more MK recognizable favorites like Jade, Kabal, Nightwolf or Kintaro (for example) and maybe a guest would sell well. Those are some klassic characters that are popular enough to capture the attention of the average player and draw them back.

The problem is that you can put all guest characters in the world, but if the game itself has nothing to offer for the casual player, then they won't even bother with it. Even if it was on sale. MK1 has attracted the maximum amount of people it could. It got all the hardcore fans, it got the casual fans of MK, but it sure as hell not getting your average casual numbers. They checked the news, they saw the content by now and said "Nah, mate. I ain't spending money to sit there and do nothing."

MK11 sold so well, cause people were promised "10.000 different game modes in Towers of Time and endless content in the Krypt" which was bullshit, but still enough to convince plenty of casuals to try the game.

MK1 sold purely on brand recognition. If any other lesser known fighting game did what MK1 did at the launch, they would have been dead on arrival. I really doubt, that MK1 sales warranted Khaos Reigns in WB eyes, but I think it was already in development, so they just allowed it to drop, to see if anything would change. But I could be wrong there.

Khaos Reigns didn't go well with the people. That was essentially nail in the coffin for WB. If my ass could see the that sales weren't going to match MK11 (hell they might not even match MKX at this rate), then their analysts sure as hell could see it too.

Overall, I think James Gunn talking with NRS, has sealed the fate of MK. Boon likes superheroes more anyway. Hell Injustice series gets so much more love, than MK too. NRS just doesn't know nor care what to do with MK. They do it, cause it is popular, not cause they have a story to tell or make something. Injustice on other hand? That shit started a whole trend with evil Superman concept. It has awesome comic book series. It is actually consistent story wise (general plotline) and Injustice 2 smokes MK11 and MK1, content wise when it comes to fighters. Stages were also much better.

It feels that they are just forcing themselves with MK at this point. Maybe theories are true and that's why they half assed MK so much. So they can work on Injustice instead. Wouldn't be surprised.

And now that James Gunn is in charge of DC, Injustice might get a permit to get bloody. James Gunn could treat the game as "Suicide Squad" movies. Maybe that's why he went to talk with them.

Yeaaaah. I am easily betting that if NRS announces anything this year, it will be DC related. Either Injustice 3 or something DC related to Gunn's universe.

Why sell dlc at a lower price when you can sell dlc at 70 plus pretending to be a full new game? Trolling NRS aside, besides some balance fixes I’m not getting my hopes up for a long time. I’m mean we’ve been through this before.

Again, the key word being IF there ends up being any DLC after T-1000.

Misucra had said: "Unless the game starts offering content, worth buying the game for your average player this franchise is going nowhere."

That's the reason why I pointed to characters like MK recognizable favorites like Jade, Kabal, Nightwolf or Kintaro being those characters that could be worth buying and lure casual folks back in.
I'm also not getting my hopes up, and it's better to not expect anything and be surprised IF something does come. Plus, if nothing else comes or is announced after today's Kombat Kast, then expectations are met of not getting anything else. 🤷‍♂️

Well... EVO registration numbers came up. MK1 is dead fucking last. What a surprise.

Yeah. They are toast. WB/NRS were betting hard on Esports scene.

I still don't understand to this day, though. WHY? MK had biggest player base. Could have made money from making adventure games with MK brand. Mini games. Could have sold Puzzle Kombat, Motor Kombat as standalone games. Holy shit. They had it all. They were top dogs of fighting games in general. Now a fucking a joke of FGC, toxic player base and no direction. GG. Retards. All of them.

"As an added treat for gamers, new movie-accurate skins of these characters, including Urban's Johnny, Rudolph's Kitana, and Ford's Shao Kahn, are coming to the Mortal Kombat 1 video game later this year."

It could just be these skins and that's it, but it could also potentially mean perhaps more content down the line.
Dunno.

That's pretty much it. I imagine they will just throw already done content to stretch out until the end of the summer and call it a day. They definitely want people to show some interest during EVO (as minimal it is) and once they milk out every possible penny, they will announce the end of support. The usual tactic.

Yeah, thinking about it more, I was having a similar conversation with a buddy who also loves MK.

I pointed out how (imo) it seems like these skins were meant to go with potential DLC characters that got cancelled..............

- Menagerie skins = 3D era / MKX era skins for Kitana, Mileena and Tanya, which look like they could have gone with JADE (intro voice files removed)

- Outworld Gala = skins that could have gone with just about ANY DLC character.

- MKX Sub-Zero and MKX Scorpion skins = skins that could have come with CASSIE CAGE (intro voice files removed) and kameo KUNG JIN (likely cancelled).

It DOES indeed seem like the end of content for the game. I could easily see them drag it out until the movie comes out and drop those 4 remaining skins. Hell, at this point I could even see them dragging out the announcement of the final version of the game for when Season 8 of Invasion repeats again back to Season 1 (Scorpion) to be like...... "Thank you for playing. Here's MK1: XL/ Ultra / Super/ Komplete/ Finito"
