Mortal Kombat 1 General Discussion Media Thread

I've been playing Wukong for the past week. Game easily shits on 99% of games even with the last chapter which is kinda unfinished.

I thought that "hey, imagine if there was an Shaolin Monks game like this!".... but then I look at NRS resume and know for a fact it's simply impossible for them to match this quality.

Sometimes I spend a good 20 minutes in just photomode alone:

The funny thing / good news is that IF another Shaolin Monks type of game ever gets made again, then it'll likely be someone else making it (just like with Shaolin Monks being made by Paradox LA) instead of NRS since WB recently stated that they want to license out their IPs to other devs.

If that's how it would be done then maaaaaybe there's a chance. As long as the Devs are a bunch of nerds who love what they're doing we'd be golden. The Asian devs are releasing bangers and look.... all nerds.

Man, I've already clocked ~70 hours with Wukong, and that's just on my first playthrough going through all the nooks and crannies. I couldn't even last 70 minutes with MK1.

IDK if making Shaolin Monks a souls like game would garner any more excitement from MK fans IMO. Most of those games are single player focused where Shaolin Monks was known for It's two player fast paced co op arcade style of the late 90's early 2000s. I much prefer a new tightly focused SM to take a TMNT shredders revenge beat em up route over a game that takes 20-70 hours to complete. It would be a breath of fresh air over souls like game 242 or whatever....and that's coming from someone who played the hell outta Stealer blade.

I would prefer something like this too. Could have the different stage Fatalities like Shaolin Monks did as well, and even make other characters unlockable again. Beat it with __________ character and unlock _________ character to play as the next time.
Dunno.

Side scrolling beatemups are almost just as oversaturated now. Just leave SM as a 3d beatemup like the original. People love the original, no reason to change its gameplay just because

Nah I wouldn't say beat em ups are oversaturated especially when you compare them to the soul like games that get released almost daily. I just used Tmnt as a example but if they went with a 3d Tekken force, the Bouncer or Godhand style. I'd be fine with that as well. All they need to do is add the platforming puzzles and thats it. I do like Commander suggestion of unlocking new characters after beating the game. That be a perfect way of getting that fire and ice game that NRS teased years ago but I'm getting ahead of myself.

Yeah, I was just generally thinking kind of like how Shaolin Monks did it.
Beat it with Liu Kang, Unlock Scorpion.
Beat it with Kung Lao, Unlock Sub-Zero.

If it's a Scorpion / Sub-Zero game that also talks about the fall-out between Scorpion (Kuai Liang now) vs Sub-Zero (Bi-Han), then perhaps beating it with Scorpion unlocks Smoke (for example) and beating it with Sub-Zero unlocks Noob Saibot.

Dunno, just brain storming based off what I'm hypothesizing could potentially happen with this whole Khaos Reigns expansion.
Using that as an example.

Didn't mean to make SM souls-like. Wukong isn't even souls-like anyways.

I just wanted to point out that a game that's full of exploration, captivating gameplay, great animations and breathtaking graphics, like Wukong, would do wonders for MK. NRS can keep churning out their shitty 1v1 cutscene Capeshit games, give the license to some Asian dev (Stellar Blade, Wukong, Elder Ring) and watch them kick major ass with it. Hell an SM game with that quality...and Co-Op? Bruh. Who the hell wouldn't want to play that? It's like the perfect casual game, and can make very challenging bosses for E-Sports crowd.

Really don't know what the fuck WBNRS is doing at this point. I already typed my opinion about MK9 Demaster, but fuck me they can't even do a Trilogy remaster like Crapcom is doing to their games. But sure Ed, people are just itching to come home after 9-5, and start playing your little Switcheroo poor man's MarvelDC game. That's why you're begging people to do referrals now, since Free Weekend was such a massive fail.

Yeah, but they would need to have a better writer, than Dominic for that.

The more NRS stays away from it, the better the end product will be. That includes Ed, Dominic, Berran and the rest of the crew.

I'm confident if some Asian dev would be given the license, budget and told to run with it they'd run circles around NRS. Warrior Shrine has the biggest gamemode ever for them to take so long with it. Online Practice and Lobbies? Super AAAA Future Tech right there. The only thing they're consistent at pushing their bloated cutscene game into 200gb territory.

The bar is so low for MK, it's embarrassing.

Yet to see a Western indie to release bangers like Wukong, Stellar Blade, Elder Ring. As far as AAA Western studios go only iD seems to be deadset on releasing kickass games. Cockstar I guess as well. The rest are too busy jerking off.

But I guess it might work for MK because the bar is THAT low.

As long as Dominic isn't writing for a Shaolin Monks type game, I might actually check it out if they do a game like that again.
I mean, the bar has been lowered so much in MK writing that I'd even accept this shit from a 3rd party Shaolin Monks type game over anything that Dominic has written for the last 2 main MK games.

Asking a guy who just got killed by being stabbed through the head if he's is "Okay" :ROFLMAO:

Man. MK1 is peak comedy. I don't remember, when was the last time MK made me laugh this much. A whole year of waiting for Warrior Shrine and it's a fucking leaderboard. Ahahahaha

The plus side that I saw out of that whole thing is that now you'll be able to gain Krystals for weekly challenges, so maybe I'll grind a bit and save up to get that Deception Quan Chi skin after all.

14Gb update for tomorrow's latest MK1 expansion.

At the very least, for me, the 4 new stages and 5 stage variants at least look cool as fuck, and I'm gonna try out all sorts of Animalities.
Who knows, maybe I'll go into the Towers of Time and try out Noob Cyrax and Sektor for free and see if any of them change my mind.
If so, then I may pick them up on October 15th.
Invasion mode skins for next Season looks whatever, but the new / revised Towers of Time (similar to the MK11 version) will be kinda neat to have back.
Gotta remember to put my Series S into sleep mode tonight so that I don't have to sit and wait while that bullshit updates.
