MKX: The MK8 that we never got?

The remake was never gonna be MK8. The remake was just an idea that they sent to Midway which was shot down.

Yes. MK8 was originally intended to be what MK9 ended up being (a reboot), but with a dark and grittier tone like MK X, but NRS shot it down and we got MKvsDC instead.

"The basis for the idea was a re-imagining of the Mortal Kombat franchise from the original premise."

MK vs DCU shouldn't even count as MK8, because it's a non-canon crossover (and crossovers by their very nature are non-canon).

I don't give a shit what Boon says! Crossovers are NOT true sequels; they never have been, they never WILL be!

Yup.

And I just wonder, will anyone from the previous timeline who survived return.

What if the big bad boss is Shao Kahn from the previous timeline (which I hope won't be the case because Shao Kahn needs to have a break)? Imagine how over powered he'd be.

I agree but unfortunately, Boon calls that MK9 and calls MKvsDCU MK8.

Yup, and this new game is titles Mortal Kombat X ("ecks"), which also can stand for 10.
MKvsDC was the 8th game that Midway made.
Despite it being a cross-over, it's still the 8th game.

Nope.
Street Fighter III is Street Fighter 3.

Mortal Kombat stopped using the numbering system after MK4.

MK has also other games: Mythologies, Specials Forces and Shaolin Monks... and they were all made by the same company.

Those weren't fighting games, though.

MK1, MKII, MK3, UMK3, MK Trilogy, MK4, MK: DA (aka MK5), MK: D (aka MK6), MK: A (aka MK7), MKvsDCU (aka MK8 ) and MK 2011 (aka MK9) were ALL fighting games.

For example, Street Fighter 1 has literally almost NOTHING to do with Street Fighter 2 in many ways, but I guess you'd consider it a fighting game too.. They actually wanted Final Fight to be the sequel of Street Fighter 1 and Final Fight belongs to the Beat Them Up genre. I don't consider MKvsDC "MK8" per se, I merely use MK9 because it's more practical...

I agree and I don't call it MK8 either, but it IS the 8th MK game, hence why so many people call Mortal Kombat (2011) MK9, rather than calling it Mortal Kombat (which it's actually titled) or MK2011.
MK9 is the 9th MK fighting game made, just as MKvsDC is the 8th fighting game made.

I agree that the MKvsDC isn't canon, but that has nothing to do with my point.

Well you kinda have to call it MK8 as the latest addition to the series is Mortal Kombat X. It's kind of official at this point. Like it or not.

When i first saw ''Mortal Kombat X'' i thought it could be like in math that X can be an unespecific number because of this discussion on the numbering.Ed never said anything about this meaning to X,probably never thought about it.
In the end,the devs call their games what they want to.The GTA series is a famous case of problems in the logic of the numbering.

In hindsight, If they made MK8 after Armageddon with all new characters etc. etc. then we would've had ALL THE OLD CHARACTERS BACK by now since many fans (and their money) would've walked away from the franchise if that happened. Remember what the REAL reason MKD and MKA tanked? I do.

Ed said that they called the game MK 10 pre announcement and now call it MK X as well.

Seems to be the case... Would have liked to have seen what MK8 would have been, though I hate the design concept for MK8 Sonya. Did they really need to her to wear even less clothes? Seriously?

Uhhh..

Deception didn't tank and is one of the most highly rated and well received MK titles to date as well as the best 3D MK Game. You're thinking about MK4, Deadly Alliance and Armageddon.

Even MK vs DCU wasn't all that bad all things considered and it isn't the reason Midway tanked as Midway was on the way to tanking long before MK vs DCU became a thing through no fault at all of the MK team.
