I agree. It's pretty clear Mortal Kombat X is the MK game the team at NetherRealm wanted to make after Armageddon. Or very close to it anyway.
With Midway hemorrhaging money, the rushed quality of Armageddon and MK vs DCU, the MK team hadn't made a high quality Mortal Kombat for years. With the WB acquisition, the team at NetherRealm Studios had a lot to prove!
They had to prove to WB they were worth the money and that Mortal Kombat was still a viable franchise. With the fans they had to prove MK could be a quality gaming experience with high production values and gameplay that is (arguably) the best in the franchise.
The best way to do that was to reboot the franchise and include all the most beloved characters in the series. Creating a game like MKX right out of the gate with WB would've probably been a really bad decision.
A true reboot of MK's 1-3 would've gotten them stuck right back to making a storyline that tread the same path when they picked up the sequel covering MK 4 and onward. Doing a self-aware reboot allowed them to modify the storyline, kill off a chunk of characters and start with a cleaner slate allowing them to make MKX the kind of game they initially wanted to make after Armageddon.
Part of me always wanted Mortal Kombat (2011) to be less ambitious and be a true reboot of MK 1 and 2 but after seeing what they're doing with MKX, I'm really glad they altered the timeline so they could change things up earlier, adding new ideas and characters that look amazing!
