MKAK Reviews Thread

Re: IGN MKAK review

More than generous. I don't know if nrs/ocean reads our posts but at least they will possibly listen to "professional" reviews and do something about this

Re: IGN MKAK review

The reviewer admits his mother wouldn't let him play MK.

His knowledge of the game is probably based on sneaking it on his friends SNES when he would go spend the night. He has probably never even played a coin-op version of any game.

Terrible.

Re: MKAK review and rather opinionated disgust from a hardkore MK fan....

NRS are like the king of letting down their fan base now, it makes no sence!? surly they didnt think we would not see through the sheer lazyness of this product? or do they just think all gamers are just stupid sheep?

Re: MKAK review and rather opinionated disgust from a hardkore MK fan....

Thanks for posting this. Just got done playing online. I played until I got my ranked flawless and I will never play this pile of trash online again. Offline isn't good either. Hell, I'd get more pleasure burning my money in a fireplace than playing this game online. In other words, save your money people.

MKAK review: a fan of MK... just not a fan of the work done in MKAK

Backstory: I haven't played them since the arcades or when I had a dreamcast as a kid and found some emulators. I did own MK3 on PC and despite the controller weirdness it was a decent port for its time. I did get UMK3 on XBLA a couple years ago and it was a pretty serviceable port. The sound works, the controls can be remapped and the online play was fairly stable. I prefer playing people local so I honestly only touch it every 4 or 5 months mainly for nostalgia. Seeing all 3 together on the mainstream weblogs (joystiq) I was SUPER excited to play these and the price seemed too good to be true.

This changed after I read about the PS3 version over the last couple days on this forum. I decided to download the trial about 12 hours ago and spent 30min messing with it. I found a few issues.
-the sound is flaky (i don't know about faithful because i'm not that detailed, but it plays intermittent on some sound effects)
-the controls are flaky (this is playing locally based on how I remember the game to play. This could be partially due to the crappy xbox360 dpad but I compared it to the standalone UMK3. The weird thing is I was able to pull off a few more fatalities on MKAK trial, but the jumping and kicks and basic movement are much less responsive during the battle)
-pause lags control
+the new filters are kinda cool
-no way to adjust the brightness/contrast
-no way to stretch/resize the display (this isn't bad because the old way never maintained aspect ration in standalone UMK3)

Skip ahead 4 or 5 hours... I was playing the demo and I was just doing a few fatalities and playing around, when my roommate came home. My roommate who is not in school (and broke like me) threw 10 bucks at me and said he'd rather watch me try and beat MK1 than just play the first round over and over. I did buy it, and I can now confirm the goro music start-stop issues in addition to my previous issues.

I have yet to touch the online because:
1. it isn't usually my thing
2. the offline gave me an overall indication of what to expect

In summary it is probably worth $5 when it comes out on some XBLA sale in 6 months, just because there is no MK1 or MK2 available on XBLA and I don't have any prior systems in my house. If this is you (a fan, but without MAME or older systems with ports or arcade cabinets) this is definitely worth $5.

The funny thing is... if they were arcade perfect ports, I think many of us on here would pay $10 apiece for them. This money grab vs quality just seems so idiotic. I seriously mean it ($10 for MK1, $10 for MK2 and I already paid $10 for UMK3)... hey I would have even paid $15 for a MK3/UMK3 type of game with settings to play either or and all the options and fun that is in the recent SFIII port with dip settings and such. If the developers are reading this... I hope they realize they just left $25 ($35 for quality vs $10 for this) on the table because they chose a different "plan of attack" for the market. ... and to top it off... we as the community would singing their praises instead of dealing with the buyers remorse.

I'm not personally out any money, but the developers and producers have failed to do 1/2 of the fighting scene of the 1990's justice. As for that other 1/2 I paid $15 for SSFIITHDRemix whenever that came out, and I'm exceedingly happy I purchased it and still play it every few weeks. Further I bought MvC2 and SFII'HF when they came out and, while I don't play them that much, I don't feel ripped off or depressed when I see them in my XBLA listing. I know that won't be the way I feel about MKAK however.

I'll be buying SFIII tomorrow night to have a quality port to enjoy my labor day weekend and so I ensure that quality development is supported. Even if you aren't a SF fan, I suggest you at least do yourself a favor and check the trial out.

I doubt we'll get a patch, because there are just too many issues. If we ever get organized on who to contact, let me know. I'm fine with writing an intelligent well thought out response to the developer if it means getting a proper port.

Re: MKAK review and rather opinionated disgust from a hardkore MK fan....

I admit, the more I play this the more flaws I find, I posted earlier saying that all the games seemed arcade perfect, but theres still alot of small glitches and the online is horrendous, I, like many can't fathom how NRS/Other Ocean cant get a bunch of 15+ year old games to run properly on a PS3, i had the fightstick ordered on Xbox 360, but I got the PSN version now because I wanted MKAK on both syastems anyway, I will now most likely cancel my fightstick as I won't be wanting this on my XBOX360 anymore. I will say the MK1 plays really well and save for a few minor sound glitches it seems faithful to the cabinet version I played back in 92', so thats a plus. Hopefully they release a patch to fix these glitches, then we can end up with what we should have gotten on day 1.

Re: MKAK review and rather opinionated disgust from a hardkore MK fan....

Thank you for spreading awareness of the video. I am the author. My account may be showing up as "new," but I've been visiting this site since 1997 (I even remember the old URL: "mk.hotweird.com"). I was so disappointed playing it (thankfully before I spent $10), I had to just get in front of a microphone and save as many people as I could. I tweeted it directly to Ed Boon as soon as it uploaded. I hope he watched it.

Re: MKAK review and rather opinionated disgust from a hardkore MK fan....

The one thing I don't like is if Steam users like myself don't buy this collection they may look at that and say well they aren't interested in MK so don't bring MK9 to Steam. :\

Re: MKAK review and rather opinionated disgust from a hardkore MK fan....

I'm just really shocked that in 2011, a game with such a huge reputation could be released like this. I design cafeteria/restaurant equipment and god damn do I get ****ed if I release one item with a mistake. But this? A huge selling game with such a huge fan base could be released and actually PUT UP ON THE FREAKING MARKET with all these mistakes.

I hate to say it but I think it's time to do what's needed...give ALL the rights to the making and technical aspects to the Chinese/Japanese and let Ed Boon and a translator instruct them, export it back to america, and sell it. Problem solved.

HeyAnEternalEnigma, Thank you!

I seriously highly doubt even a big patch or two could fix this mess. I concur 100% with those of you saying they should just pull it off psn/xbl completely then re-release a new one from the groundup made by a co. Other than Other Ocean. All they really have to do is take the MK1 from Deception, MK2 that used to be on psn or Midway Arcade Treasures 2, and UMK3 from Armageddon then tweak them a bit adding in GGPO into a re-release compilation. Everyone would be very happy. <All those versions were roughly 98% perfect imho. Really not that hard from a developers standpoint and they really should have done something along those lines in the first place.

On a sidenote here's a little snippet of response from them>

We expected an HD remix like SSF2T HD remix(which was a love letter for every sf fan).We didnt get it.They gave us a bad port instead. Why pay for this???Play it in mame instead which is way better...

Re: MKAK review and rather opinionated disgust from a hardkore MK fan....

I have to say, I am tired of this bull from Warner Bros (at least I can only hope that it was Warner and not the NRS team that would insist to push this half-butted piece of crap)

It's incredibly frustrating that coming off such a strong performance from MK 2011, they couldn't capitalize by releasing something worthy of all the hype again to completely restore the good Mortal Kombat brand. To think that PDP actually released a fight stick for the collection is a bit mind boggling. I had actually bought one for a dear friend for his ps3 and now I feel bad because he can't use it to play it on the UMK3 from 06 for his 360.

The guy in the video nailed it; Why Warners/NRS/Ocean can't treat MK like Capcom does with SF in terms of fan loyalty and remastering everything - music, graphics, freakin online play (!!!). Even the minor details of spectator modes (for some not all of their games), as well as the idea of embracing 21st century technology of uploading videos to the internet (which really should be a staple of ANY online game at this point).

Here's to hoping that they release a properly done HD kollection some day. Until then, I think im just going to stick with MK9

If this was twitter i would end with a #EffingDisappointing

Re: MKAK review and rather opinionated disgust from a hardkore MK fan....

shouldnt they fix MK9 before releasing another broken game? tut tut Warner Bros arnt you like a million doller company or something, stick to making movies i say

Oh hell yes, this. I hope this debacle ignites the HD kollection project somehow. If it's as good as SSF2THDR was to SSF2T... I'd totally pay for it. Even twice.

Re: MKAK review and rather opinionated disgust from a hardkore MK fan....

I would love a well made HD Remix too although I'm not holding my breath. Face it every Mortal Kombat project has some loose end or something left out or not quite up to snuff in it. I mean at least any third party project especially ports of the older games. I was highly dissapointed with most of the ports especially the 16-bit console ports back in the day which none of them matched up to the arcade. Rose tinted glasses memories be damned. Also MKT back in the day despite its popularity was full of unfinished or half assed work.

I can already hear some people say "Oh but I loved my SNES\Genesis copies of MK they where da bomb!" Yes, to you back then they where especially since there weren't any alternatives to play them at home but they just did not match the arcade at all.

Even the more accurate ports had some screw up slipped in there somewhere.

Re: MKAK review and rather opinionated disgust from a hardkore MK fan....

Well, I played MKT on N64 a couple weeks back and had more fun with that than this.
