Midway's Coming Bankruptcy

Yep, Midway has 50 days to pay it's outstanding debts (in excess of $150 million) or it goes bankrupt. My question is, how does this affect the next Mortal Kombat game? Do you think it will be bought out by somebody? Of course, if that happens MK might fall out of the hands of Ed Boon and company...and as much as I'm pained to say this. That might be a good thing for the franchise. They might put some emphasis on gameplay for once. As it stands we're not even sure MK will change hands, nor if Midway will be able to survive. But I just wonder what everyone's thoughts are on the matter.

Yeah, it'll be bought up by another game publisher. I doubt Boon will lose creative control, though. If the MK team wants to continue working on the franchise, the new publisher will let them.

It's sort of the opposite of what's happened with Itagaki and Team Ninja over at Tecmo. Tecmo claims they'll continue developing DoA and Ninja Gaiden games, but I doubt the games will be received well by fans since Tecmo deep-sixed Itagaki.

I also believe that the MK team will remain intact, regardless of whether or not another publisher picks them up. MK is, despite whatever fluctuations in popularity we may perceive, a sure thing on the financial side of the arena (considering Special Forces was really the only release you could call a flop), so I can't imagine someone else stepping in and telling them how things need to be done.

I could be wrong, but looking at the staying power of the series over such an incredibly long period of time, that doesn't really seem to me like it allows for someone coming in to **** it up. Whichever publisher snatches them up would no doubt be considered lucky to have them.

I also believe Ed boon and most of the MK Team will remain working on the future MK games. And I hope John Tobias will be back as well.

I personally would like Sony to buy the Mortal Kombat IP. Not that I think Sony is better than everything else, but b/c Sony has lots of money and with there blu-ray ability they would be able to make some really high end, Indepthed MK games. Like Gods of War 3 thats comming out, since its exclusive to the PS3 will be be full 1080p and about 3 or 4 times longer than if it was a multi platform release. So with Mortal Kombat being an exclusive they would be able to capitalize on that as well.

Give MKvsDC for example, if it was PS3 exclusive it could of had better graphics and full 1080p and have not only alot more characters and arenas but maybe a full size adventure mode to go along with the story mode and arcade mode.

Another kool thing to see is Mortal Kombat go back to the Arcades. Not that I think it would happen but it would be kool. Id just buy the arcade and invite everyone to come to my house and play it for FREE. HAHA

How in the world would making the game a PS3 exclusive deliver any of those things?

Following your logic, they should simply develop exclusively for the 360, because the architecture is more accessible.

There's no chance in hell that Sony would purchase MK anyway.

Also going Bankrupt doesn't mean going out of business, it just means they file for bankruptcy to eliminate debts and restructure to get on the right foot. I'll be an interesting few months, but I'm sure we'll see the core teams there remain.

TRZA, put aside your biases for a moment, what in the hell do you have against Sony anyways?

Biases? I've got nothing against Sony. The guy above seems to think that Sony is the Messiah, however.

Developing exclusively for Sony would effectively alienate more than half of the MK fan base. Take a look at the sales numbers for this last game. I'm saying that'd be a poor move on MK's part, and Sony would never purchase the IP.

Considering its been developing for both consoles...

Don't you think going for a one-only console relase is a bit baised on both your heads?

I can't imagine the MK team being kicked off the project if the franchise is bought out. Ed and his boys are the driving force behind the game, and have been since the beginning, so I can't imagine us fans taking too kindly to their leaving. Having said that though, Boon did say in a recent interview that he would like to see how somebody else handled the MK franchise.

Giving somebody else control over it could really screw it up. I could imagine a new creator wanting to do away with most of the special moves (obviously keeping one or two per character, so that the can still milk Scorpion and his spear for advertising purposes) and transforming the game into another typical modern day fighter.

Yeah I've read quite a lot about all this on Gamespot. There are those like myself who hope Midway will pull through and then there are idiots who spit that Midway should be dead in the ground.

I'd like Ed and the Team to stick with Midway. EA doesn't need to be buying out the series, they've already got enough backing them in their quest for global domination!

However, I also think that maybe Midway should have done that merger deal with Eidos a few months back. The two companies would probably do great together, Midway with the MK franchise and Eidos with Hitman.

Eidos with HITMAN? You think that's their biggest seller? I mean, I know Hitman is violent and MK is violent, but when I think Eidos I don't think Hitman. When I think Midway, I think MK.

Indeed, it's moronic to even think such. I ventured that remark about developing for the 360 out of sarcasm.

Few publishers can afford to develop exclusively these days. His ideas about making the game a PS3 exclusive were simply ludicrous.

OK, I will take back the PS3 exclusive.....how about make 2 versions of the game...Simple version for the xbox 360 that can only hold what a DVD can hold, and the PS3 version that maxes out the blu-ray capacity. And then maybe when the new xbox comes out it will use blu-ray discs as well, so the games came be equal. I dont think Sony is superior, its just that there using the blu-ray that holds more data. Maybe xbox 360 and PS3 could share the same game, just the xbox 360 version could have the arcade game on one disc, the story mode on another and the adventure on the 3rd disc. But for some reason they dont seem to want to do that.

The whole point of all of this is....The PS3 version of MKvsDC and every other MK game that comes out for the PS3 will be held back, the games wont be very big and will only fill 1/4 of the blu-ray disc....only b/c they want the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to be as close to each other as possible.....

Atleast I get Gods of War 3 i guess....

I want to add something b/c I dont want any flamming crap.

The xbox 360 is also being held back as well to make these MK games equal.

The xbox 360 has 512 meg shared between data and graphics- so can be used however necessary, which gives better graphics during in-game. The PS3 has lower textures b/c it only has 256meg video memory but these lower textures are at better res b/c of the 1080p. And like I said stored data on the blu-ray disc is 4 times more. So really both systems are held back, but in different ways. You know what I say to it all...MK needs to come back to arcades...and could run on a super PC where there is no limits and have a HD 1080p monitor....kinda like Street Fighter 4 arcade...but better...hehehe

Well I wont jump on the DVD not enough room train, look at games like GTAIV and Fallout 3, you really can cram a LOT on the disc. Blu-ray just gives a developer with too much space to work with, great games have been made with little to no space. So I think going to Blu-ray just removes their creativity in some cases. It doesn't provide better graphics, just more storage space.

If you are implying that I was flaming you, you're wrong.

I was just pointing out (pointedly) that making any MK game an exclusive would be detrimental to sales. And the idea of making it specifically a PS3 exclusive would not do anything to immediately deliver on any of the things you proposed.

Characters? The number of characters was scaled back because of the DC license and for balancing reasons, most likely. Adding additional characters isn't gonna strain the storage space of the dvd format.

Arenas? It has a comparable amount of arenas to most other fighting games. Again, the storage capacity of the format has nothing to do with this.

An expansive adventure mode? That would've taken considerable planning and programming aside from hammering out the deals with DC and tweaking the fighting mechanics. A time constraint, not a constraint of the platform or the medium.

And I haven't made the HD plunge, but the original Xbox 360 hardware is capable of 1080p output with a software upgrade, and I'm pretty sure it's native on the elite units.

At any rate, in no way would making this game an exclusive add anything to the overall experience. It'd simply rob those with only one console the opportunity to play the game.
