Kratos to star in upcoming mortal kombat

Kratos's rage fits perfectly in the MK universe. He should be a DLC though, or a hidden character.

DLC sounds like the best way to appease both fan types (the ones that want Kratos, and the ones who don't).

As DLC I don't HAVE to download him, unless NR pulls a douche move and bundles Kratos with some DLC Classic Fatalities.

For the record, I don't hate Kratos. I love the God of War games, but keep him outta my fighting game! As Taj has been saying, it's just a ploy to make more money. Keep him as optional DLC and I'll be fine. Otherwise...**** it!

Honestly, the only way for me to be JUST A TINY BIT okay with this, is if they release the game without Kratos and make him DLC. However, when i say make him DLC, i mean for NR studios to WAIT a long period of time to make him available for download, somewhat like how soul calibur made 360 fans wait for Vader and vice versa for PS3 users and Yoda. The reason being is because people can buy the game to play it for its initial purpose FIRST AND FOREMOST, like we were all supposed to. A long period of time after release and all the initial hype starts to die down, then NR studios should release kratos for the people who want extras, and GOW fan boys can buy the game as well, creating more profit for NR Studios. This allows us fans to not be disserviced, and then everyone can have an extra later.

Him being a raging dick doesn't make him fitting for the MK universe. There are A LOT of characters that are filled with rage. This is honestly one of the worst defenses on the pro side.

"He's violent! He's angry! He's crazy!!!" Yeah, well so is Eric Cartman. Should we throw him in there as well?

LOL Thank you!

this game was suppose to be a throwback to the good old days where fighting games could stand on their own without unnecessary crossover characters...

instead we get a lower dosage of the MK vs DC treatment...

Disappointing? Yes...

Deal breaker? No...not yet anyway

But I can't help but feel like I've been misled by NRS...

and none of you have the right to tell me or anyone else to simply get over it...this could very well change the whole dynamic of the game.

true i do genuinely feel for guys who just wanted this to be like the classics with no "interference" from other game characters

Another person who realizes what the point of this game was... Hopefully others now can see more why we are pissed off, and realize its not a small deal to us fans who were bought into this fan service originally made by NR studios. I applaud your post Knives.

Come on guys, seriously, it's not the end of MK. If that were the case, it would have ended after UMK3.

C'mon, laugh, you know it's funny!

Five Stages Of Loss and Grief:

1. Denial and Isolation
2. Anger
3. Bargaining
4. Depression
5. Acceptance

According to this, I'm on stage 5 and have accepted that Kratos will somehow appear in MK.
I just hope, for my sanity, that he's only DLC.

In fact, once I get my Pre-Ordered MK 9, the first one to PM me can get my DLC code.
If no one wants it, because they have their own Kratos DLC code (or don't want it), I'll just throw it away.

This is my perception of the situation. If the unnamed character to be debuted this Saturday were to be announced as a hooded guy with chain swords called Chainswordian Cho you all would have nothing to complain about. As a matter of fact, I am pretty confident those same people damning Kratos in the game would be listing numerous reasons why Chainswordian Cho is NOT a Kratos knock-off. MK is a game that has shown that no rules truly exist and anything can and WILL happen. MK arcade machines falling on opponents’ heads, Characters turning into pink dinosaurs and biting opponents in half, floating forearms, 7 legs on the ground after exploding, and a VERY weak ‘poof’ end of the world because a character dropped 15 grenades on the ground are just a very minor few of the examples of the ridiculous MK has given us. In consideration of this God-knows-what-can-happen approach I see the announcement of a guest character as a VERY MINOR example of this. Those who feel that the ‘classic MK’ feel is gone because of a guest character are not taking the above seriously. ‘Classic MK’ is a no-holds-barred anything goes bloody good fun fighting game and the addition of Kratos will not change that in the slightest.

Those worried about the additional character disqualifying MK9 from tourney-level play are not giving the MK team due credit. If you feel, even in the slightest, that scorpion or sub-zero will be tourney-play worthy, what would make Kratos any different unless the programmers do a poor job of balancing him against the other characters. Basically, at this very point, we have no idea how he plays, if he is balanced or not, or whether he is tourney-worthy.

For those worried that it will attract new players who are not past MK fans, WTF? Seriously, do you not want MK to come back on the scene and spark up old and new fans to make MK respectable again? Though you may have enjoyed Special Forces and the 3D MKs prior to MK9 does not mean that all the original fans felt the same way. Most of the hardcore fans have been waiting for the return to MK’s roots, and now we have it. Do not despair that a guest character may help expand the fan-base. NRS needs as many people to love MK as possible for it to keep pumping out stellar MK games from now on. Whether you like it or not, MK has lost a lot of love and respect in the gaming community over the years and it will take everything in NRS’ power to make sure EVERYONE takes notice. Otherwise the game would, VERY undeservedly, fall into the shadows of MK:A and MK vs. DC. And just be labeled ‘another one of those MK games’.

All of us are on TRMK because we LOVE Mortal Kombat. Please remember that. I, myself, have been a fan since its original debut in the arcades in 1993. I vividly remember waiting outside the local arcade in my home town for those chain gates to open to the shiny new MKII cabinet sitting in the center of the room. I have dumped hundreds of dollars in the arcade playing countless other fans on those beautiful machines. Lining up behind others waiting to be the next to take on that guy that no one can seem to beat while forming my strategy, rubbing my next 2 quarters anxiously together in my pocket. The POINT of MK is nothing if not bloody good fighting with friends. Again, the addition of a guest character is not going to change that one iota.

Classic MK did not have the elaborate storylines or twisted relationships our beloved MK characters have today. Their backgrounds were short, simple, and to the point. If you stop and think about it, NRS has crafted a story for the MK game rebirth that will give them the freedom to re-write the history of these awesome characters. Have you asked yourself why? Maybe it is because they decided they didn’t like where the past games took them. So I’d like to ask you to stop and consider how awesome it will be to NOT know what to expect out of your favorite characters from this point on.

Trust NRS and Ed Boon that they will be doing everything in their power to deliver the stellar MK experience we’ve ALL been waiting for. Be kind to your fellow MK enthusiasts, it’s because we exist that the game exists. Most of all, laugh and have fun building the excitement until this amazing game’s release. Until then, all hail the return of the Arcade King, Mortal Kombat.

Yes, everybody please stop acting so ridiculously.. I have never played God of War, but I hear it's fantastic!

Sure, maybe Kratos wasn't originally in Mortal Kombat. BUT, he is not in story mode. He is simply another body to choose from the roster and kick some ass with. Stick to the story mode, purists...

Also note that having Kratos in this game may bring enough new players to the series to warrant the production of Mortal Kombat 10, which probably won't happen until the next generation = higher budget necessary.

Freakin FIERCE photo man!

Again im going to say the only way for me to accept this is what i said in my earlier post. Make him DLC and dont release him right away, wait a long time like soul calibur did with Darth Vader on the 360 and Yoda on the PS3. That way fans can buy the game for the purpose of being a fan service to people who loved MK in the glory days, and so it can give new fans a taste of what MK was, back in the glory days. After all the hype of the release dies down and MK becomes the IT game again (hopefully), then release Kratos as a bonus for everyone, that way NR and WB can make more money. It works out totally, it doesnt ruin the overall purpose of the game, and fans get a bonus.

I love you bro,
But if you are, in fact, 18 you would have been 2 to 3 years old during the glory days of Mortal Kombat which peaked with MKII in 1993 and the subsequent console releases in 1994.

I understand and respect you don't like Kratos being in Mortal Kombat, but I can assure you it does not take away from the glory days the new MK is aiming for. I mean, characters clapped their hands and rainbows popped out and characters where turned into crying babies. I don't think it's a fair argument to say Kratos does not fit into the throw-back ideology the new MK is progressing toward.

Also, and ultimately, this is Ed Boon's creation. If he decides Kratos fits, then he fits. I didn't enjoy the barbie-doll like characters, the box-ish fighting mechanics, or the lack of frame counting to ensure balanced fights that he came up with in the past 3D MKs, but I am still thankful for the new MK9. Regardless of whether a fat farting drunken boxer, a skinless character 'creatively' named Meat, a silly man in a motion capture costume, a jiggly-boobed half dressed girl who fights with tamborines named Tamborina, or a blood soaked half-god spartan warrior with chain blades graces the screen I will give MK9 the fighting chance it deserves next year.

Dude, dont get me wrong, i love MK for what it is as well, and I know I am going to love this game as well. And yeah I am 18 lol, the first video game i ever played was MK, so that got me hooked for life ever since I was 4. And I count MK3 and its updates as part of the glory days as well because thats when 2D gameplay stopped. But bro, it does take away from the glory days the new MK is aiming for, my theory was somewhat correct, we currently have another thread talking about what other DLC from other franchises should be included in MK, this is only the beginning, people are going to now put the exclusive characters in front of the original purpose, which was a fan service. Its already started, and I bet a lot of other people can agree with me on that one. I know this is Boon's creation, but still, this was supposed to be straight up MK, like we used to have, and they just included a story there so it can tie in with Armageddon.

just one or two from other franchises wont really harm mk in anyway as long as they dont interfere with its story. if theres more than one guest character whats so bad about fighting as neo (from the matrix) or whoever nrs decides, as long as its not mk vs dc all over again, the guests wont take the spotlight awaw from mk

Taj,

If we start seeing Blinx the Time Sweeping Cat or Sonic the Hedgehog I'm going to toss my MK9 disc in the shredder and throw the shards up in the air so they rain down all over me while I dance a pagan ritual to ensure Boon never creates another game for the rest of his life. However, Smash Bros. Brawl this is not! I believe that the fame and stardom as well as the iconic violent imagery associated with Kratos (I know, everyone feels this isn't enough to warrant his presence) gives him an edge as to why he would be included in the world's most celebrated bloody game and its rebirth. I am guilty of playing with the possibility of another guest character in the future, Ezio Auditore from Assassin's Creed II & Brotherhood, but it was just a passing thought to entertain my mind moreso than an outright desire to truly see his character in the game. The novelty of Kratos' inclusion WILL die down and all things will return focus to the real stars of Mortal Kombat. No ONE in video game history can steal the torch from the likes of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, and Raiden. Let this hoop-la blow over about Kratos, be happy (at the very, very least) that he will bring new fans into the series and be thankful, also, that he's not a truly horrible character that looks so out of place like a disney cartoon in a Saw movie sequel. Trust me, if you don't know already, he will bring the blood just as good as the old-school crew and will fit right in after a time. He's not the star of this game. We, the fans, are. And I, for one, will not forget that.
