When I heard Killer Instinct was making a long over-due return, I nearly soiled myself from excitement! I played the KI games in the arcade (along with MK, of course) and enjoyed them immensely.
My excitement quickly dissipated once I saw videos of the reboot. I haven't played it, obviously, but it just seems like a rushed, cash-cow to promote the XBO, game. It simply looks like a reskinned version of SF4 at least graphically and to an extent, gameplay.
Naturally, Microsoft is involved, which if recent history is any indication, can never be a good thing. After Windows 8, Surface, Windows Phone, the botched-yet-quickly-revised-plans on how XBO was going to be launched, I really should have not expected much with KI and sadly, I don't.
I wanted to believe, hold fast to hope that KI would be returned to glory with the love, the respect, and attention to detail that it rightfully deserves and be part of the KI history I knew and loved years ago.
This is where NRS excels. The MK reboot was arguably the best MK game ever. You could see the love and respect NRS has for MK, as well as the fanbase, and they proudly put it all on display in MK9. After 20 years of following the franchise, MK9 quite possibly will always be the best game to me.
Hell, even Injustice, despite all its glaring flaws, was shown the same level of respect by NRS for the DC universe/lore. The in-game graphics, the audio, the assortment of content, all the little details in how characters move, etc shows that NRS, like with MK, respects their work and has pride in their projects.
I'm not getting that feeling from DH and KI. What I am getting is a sense of contrived overcompensation with a heavy dose of "get this thing out asap and milk, milk, milk it for all we can; then some and a little bit more" all while riding the coattails of SF.
They still have not revealed much in way of the character roster and here it is pretty much September; game launches in November. The new female character looks like a cross between Ermac, Scorpion, and Raven with a gloss of Spiderman-inspired moves. I'm also not overly excited about how Jago, Saberwulf, Glacius, and Thunder look. I'm worried as to how Orchid, the one character I think everyone is waiting to see (Fulgore probably a close second), will look and play.
Unlike MK and Injustice, I am stepping back and waiting to see what actually becomes of KI at launch and post-launch, which I fear is not going to be a whole lot.
I hope I am wrong. KI deserves much better.
