Jax. Good or Bad?

Considering one of the most populaur character has four arms and orange skin... While another of his race have tiger markings and the third green skin... Half the skimpy women are tanned skinned or asian looking, only about 15% of the cast is what you can truly call "white" (Outworlders and the likes don't can't because their from another world).
I'll cut a long story short.
Why do you even bother calling people that in a game where 10% of the cast isn't even from America. It doesn't matter if their black or white, if the character sucks, the character SUCKS! And we're all saying Jax SUCKS! Reguardless of race, you can't change that he is dull and no one likes him.
If he was bright blue with pink spots, most people would still hate him (actaully considering he'd looking stupid... Maybe thats not such a good example I guess).

Haha, I'm 90% certain he was joking. Anyway, reading this thread, I don't think that many of us do think he "SUCKS!". That's like saying, you know I like fish, but I like steak better, FISH MUST SUCK.

Great post, all very true. But ya, we dont "hate" Jax, we all just can probably name at least 5 characters we would like to see instead of him.

I'm rooting for Jax. The only problem I'm having with it is that visual reports that he looks like the MK3 version. I was kinda hoping for a Special Forces varient.
I'm glad he's in the game. It's better than having Johnny Cage to be honest with y'all. They aren't racists SWAT, every has an opinion.

I don't know...joking or not, he didn't use any kind of hint or emoticon to "hint" at the joking factor but whateve lol. Plus, just my personal opinion and I agree with Angel totally, that's not something you "joke" about, but that aside that's just a ridiculous concept. Look at GL(John Stewart) he's black yet a lot more popular then Jax is....and like I mentioned earlier, Stryker is a white cop(I guess hating on white cops are ok) yet I didn't see anyone crying over him being not popular?
Just want to say that's the point of emoticons on sites in general. More people should use them otherwise most will assume comments like that are "serious"

I'm pretty okay with it, just a little worried that Johnny Cage will be in.... grrr... i know he will, and then that leaves less spots for Rep and baraka, along with raiden ofcourse.

Amen to that. I don't have anything against Cage (or maybe I do) but like many have said for other characters, those roster slots could be used for better characters like...like Kai! *bricked, nuked, p*ssed on* Ok! OK! Sheesh! He's one of my favs dammit!
But again, go Jax. His metal arms may have a chance against Superman.

Anyway, all this heated discussion about an off-hand comment is kind of ridiculous I think. These kinds of things wouldn't be such a big deal if people wouldn't make them out to be. I know I've said occasionally (Jokingly of course) when I see a black guy prominently placed where you wouldn't expect it (mind you, these are specific circumstances) I'll call the producer/director/writer "racist". It's just an easy way to point out the obvious inconsistency. You can joke about anything. It's the people that read it that make it into something more. So don't make it into something.

There is a fine line between joking/not joking when it comes to racist comments. Me, personally, im bad with stereotyping especially when it comes to racism so i find humor in most racist comments.
This was definitely one of those humorous ones and there was one or two people who took it seriously and too far and made it awkward for the rest of us.
Jax has always been the token black guy and its funny.

right, see just as you said, the sadness is this kind of discussion(especially in all text with no laughter or tone of voice to set the theme) leaves too much room for people to speculate upon the intended meaning. everyone makes a big ass thing and here comes SWAT back to say "hello, i was kidding" lol. sadly we all know there's still racists out there, and that such a thing should be handled with delicacy. but good lord, when are we as humans finally gonna get past this crap?
anyway i voted yes for jax... i don't know why but without any real reason i'm going to assume it'll help the storyline. my personal opinion for jax however is that i've never like him much... he's the token black guy as you said, and therein lies the problem. i recognize that there needs to be one but they really could've made a character with some real dimension, not this big tough "i have no real powers or purpose" Shaft-type guy. know what i mean? how bout lets not treat him as the special minority but rather make a believable and embraceable hero who happens to be black. that's actual brain power, as opposed to just sticking in a blowhard character with the right skin color to avoid a lawsuit or what have you. this is still off topic, but dare i say, it's far more racist to crank out a pile of crap character just to fit certain minority than it is to simply leave that minority out entirely. "here you go, a bland cookie cutter black guy, enjoy" yeah that doesn't sound half baked.....

Well Jax wasn't cookie cutter originally. No more than Sonya was anyway. He basically was a male Sonya Blade. Sonya had the leg grab, Jax had the backbreaker. Sonya had the energy ring toss, Jax had the energy wave toss. You see the similarities in their movesets? They swapped out the token white chick for the token black guy. MK has been stereotyped a lot in the past. Liu Kang is your basic asian kung fu guy. Johnny Cage is a movie star and the foreign concept of an american playboy actor. Even Raiden is a traditional concept of a god personified in flesh. Really only Kano, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion have uniqueness in backstory or powers. And Kano is pushing it, his biggest unique factors are his red eye and cannonball move.
Now in MKII we got a few more unique characters in Kitana, Milleena, Baraka, Kung Lao, and Reptile (who got a proper backstory). So the way I see it, Jax isn't any more racist than many of the original MK cast.
My point is that I see this with some humor and amusement. I don't see the comment "...racists", which I knew was in joking manner only because I talk to SWAT so regularly, and fly off the handle. Because in all seriousness, you could call the Midway blokes racists because of exactly what I've said above. Whether it was an opinion or a joke there was no need to shoot him down so quickly when he might have a valid point.
