James Wan to Produce new MK movie

https://youtu.be/F8TFVkaMXAI

At 7:40 mark James Wan talks about the mortal kombat movie, he mentions the script is not done yet and they still not sure the tone they will approach for the movie.

Good find. Sucks it isn't further along, but at least it sounds like they're taking their time with the script and finding the right tone is really important like he said. I hope he's somewhat of a fan and gets what makes the series great, but it is in better hands than Kevin Tancheron at least. Looks like the script he had ready was completely scrapped all together.

On another note, that web series was supposed to come out "early 2016". It's getting into the second quarter of 2016 now and still nothing on it. I wonder if WB hated it enough to pull it from release.

Essentially, no movie, no web series, no season 3. Is it really that hard to make a live action Mortal Kombat? I hope it's not gonna be a CGI fest because they could easily take a combined route of the First MK Movie, Legacy Season 1, and MK Conquest in terms of practicality and CGI usage. Now they say the budget for the movie will be S40-50 Million Dollars, so if that's true they might as well can the movie because Fant4stic Flop had a $120 Million Dollar Budget and look how that turned out.

The first one is said to be the best video game to movie adaptation. Its not bad as a movie on its own.

That sequel was gold though. It was like power rangers. Oscar worthy.

MK will always look terrible in live action. The costumes translate poorly to the real world. It's why MK Rebirth was such a great idea. Bring us all of the characters we love, but reinvent them to actually be believable. That way they don't look like Power Ranger monsters.

Rebirth is a glorified Uwe Boll adaptation.

MK Rebirth trailer was better than MK Legacy as a whole. Except for that Hydro fight, that shit was pimp

Rebirth isn't even Mortal Kombat at all. It's more unfaithful to the Source Material than a counterfeit blowdryer.

After the success of mkx and an R rated movie like deadpool, I think WB is taking a mk movie franchise seriously and trying to plan it out. Just from firing Kevin Tancheron and bringing in a big name like James Wan to produce shows this. The 40-50 million budget was the original plan, but that may have changed. Even with a lower budget like that, it could still work. I believe deadpool was in that area of a budget and so was the second raid movie. Hopefully they can figure out that script soon. Also, the new fantastic four wasn't bad because of the budget, but everything that could go wrong with that movie, did. The main actor and director even came close to fighting on set.

Why can't they have a faithful MK movie series without reinventing. The reinvention rebirth did was annoying. There's no need for that. Just do it right for Pete's sake. They might as well just call it something else if they go the Rebirth route.

Appearance wise, I could understand if they reimage characters that way. But story is something they shouldn't fvck with.

I chalk it up as MK being great movie potential that has been poorly executed so far. I don't know why its so hard for them to do it right.

Hire John Tobias and John Vogel to be the only scriptwriters. Problem solved.

If you want people to take the story seriously, then you can't have the cast running around looking like morons.
Ninjas look stupid enough in cinema. Color coded ninjas, like I said, are god damned Power Ranger rejects.

Rebirth took a much more grounded approach and gave us a brief chance to see the MK crew in a way that wouldn't make us facepalm.

I still can't see why they couldn't make it work without totally screwing the characters.

Baraka turns in to a human contortionist. You're saying they really couldn't make a convincing Tarkatan monster (or any other character) work today without going power rangers? I find it hard to believe.

After watching the avengers, guardians of the Galaxy (which has a talking raccoon), deadpool, batman movies and the daredevil series, I completely disagree. They can make it work. It's about finding the right story and tone. The costumes can be updated to fit live action, but still be faithful to what they are. I mean Captain America has a lame name and is dressed as an American Flag, yet winter soldier was an awesome movie and was obviously successful. If they can make a character like that cool onscreen, they can make a blue ninja who freezes people awesome.

Rebirth was utterly disrespectful to the established canon. Fans expect faithfulness to the source material. There's a reason why damn near every film adaptation of video games is a Box Office Bust, and there's a reason the 95 MK movie once held the all-time Box Office record for such movies.

Exactly.

Not that MK should be the same tone of a Marvel movie. I think it should be dark and obviously violent.
When I think of the perfect MK movie, I think of the first three game's soundtrack, close my eyes and imagine what could be.
