How does a character look like an Mk Character/should we leave that idea

This thread is a little late with most of the people who hate the designs left but I wanna here your thoughts on the idea if we should go beyond on what an MK character looks like

Step one: start with sub zero
Step two: replace blue with another color (white)
Step three: replace ice element powers with other element (like light)
Step four: create generic backstory and allow minimal lines for remainder of the series ("nobody knows where Lightbulb came from" "after winning the tournament, Lightbulb disappeared in a flash of light" "Lightbulb belong to a race of glass people from the glass realm" (never show anyone else from said race or realm))

I don't think there is a certain recipe to how an MK character should look like. There are the palette-swaps, but there are also other various designs that are unique to the series.

What most of them have in common is that they are inspired from other popular media. For example, Johnny Cage is Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raiden and Shang Tsung were inspired from the movie "Big trouble in Little China", the MK ninjas are freaking Power Rangers, etc.

So it would be a start to find a source of inspiration and build the character up from there. Putting some ancient Asian themes in there as well would help as well. Take Kenshi, for example - he's very Metal Gear'esque, but at the same time has the "blind samurai" stereotype built into his character as well.

The new character for MK is... this inanimate carbon rod!

Bahaha, thanks for making this thread's existence worthwhile.

I'm reminded of BBBLP's post about Ferra/Torr's backstory (not sure if you were inspired by the same):

Torr/Ferra has no future in Mortal Kombat, their bio pretty much confirms that. Zero thought was put into their story lol
"Maybe they're this, could be that they're that, might be from here, possible they came from there"

Top tier back story.

I've gotta agree, the story of Cryomancers and Saurians is pretty much non existant.

We don't know much about enenras either, I know they are not a race, but we should know something more about what they really are.

All I know is that Reptile needs to be human again. That's literally the only change I would make to any character.

But I like water...

Oooookay. Since I can't seem to make you go away, I guess I'll have to answer legitimately :(

I get that it gives him a unique look, but growing up I always liked how Retpile was THEE third ninja; I stopped playing at MK3 and didn't start again till MK9, and it's suddenly "Oh hey, they took his title literal".

It's just really, really jarring to me.

Well, I'm in the opinion of the MK ninjas should look as far from the palette-swap look as possible. I know it doesn't mean Reptile can't look human, but to me it's still a step away from that. And I like it. ^^
