Future of MK

I can tell this for sure, they'll never make a game like MK9 ever again. They were overdosed with booze while snorting coke. Some of the most moronic gameplay design choices and atrocious programming, yet the game is still fun.

By far Reptile from 9 is my fav, even with all the weaknesses and strengths. 1 frame recovery on elbow dash, atomic damage with meter (50%+ easily), unique sweep, but horrible normal dash and normals. Such a complex character, so much going for him.

But of course he's Mid tier because NRS were fucking high when adding characters like Smoke, Sonya, Cage, Skarlet, Mileena, Kabal, Cyrax, Kung Lao.... Just yesterday I tried a super long set of Kano vs top tier Mileena, it's impossible to win because Mileena absolutely rapes him, yet just keep going and going.... Can't see myself doing that with X or 11.

I'm having a feeling that MK12 will be a game for the Hoilday season. Tekken 8 probably won't be out until 2024 and SNK's new Fatal Fury game is still in works. MK12 and SF6 will probably be the two big new fighters of 2023. It's the first time we had a new SF and MK game released in the same year since 1997. SF was mostly dead during the PS2 era, and SF4 & SF5 were just getting updates during the release of MK9-11.

Shit, at this point I'll take MKX gameplay again.
Most of the variations were fun as hell to explore (even the no variation mode) and the post-MK3characters like Tremor, Tanya, Kenshi, Quan Chi and Shinnok were pretty fun and so was Takeda, Cassie, Ferra / Torr, D'Vorah and Kotal Kahn.
Meter management felt better (imo) and I liked that Fatalities didn't have the stupid stop-motion crap that MK11 does.
MKX also didn't require you to be "always online" which is a dumb fuck habit that devs have gotten into these days and has killed my hype for some games these days......most recently with Kill the Justice League and Redfall being confirmed to be always online, just like MK11.
Fuck that noise.
Yeah, MKX was mostly brown and grey in terms of colors, but it was more quick paced and fun.

Does everyone think that MK12 will take place in a 3rd timeline that's different than the 1992 original timeline and different than the MK9/MKX/MK11 timeline? Or will MK12 be the 1992 timeline and the MK9/MKX/MK11 timeline combined? Would the MK Onslaught lore be like the MK12 lore?

Well according to Ed, they moved away from variations. Also 'member him salivating over more GaaS always online bullshit.

I dunno what their next game will be, and tbh, don't really care. MK9 was their peak imo. If I had to put a bet, they're just going to make MK11 part 2. Probably the gameplay "innovation" will be something like Scorpion's back back 1 is now back forward back down up 3+4, requires meter and turns into a bomb.

MK11 was such a turd it really killed most of my interest for NuMK. I remember people telling me "YoU MiSsEd sO mUcH CoNtEnT!!!". Hang on, lemme load up this Unlocker.... wait, I didn't miss shit?

I'd be really interested in a new MK game if they'd finally do something new, or just give us that fucking SM2 game already. 1v1 followed by YouTube videos just isn't cutting it anymore. Unfortunately for me, WB is telling NRS what to do, therefore MK11 Part 2 is the most "logical" choice.

Oh well, in that case, hands full with MK9 and Atomic Heart.

I used to think MK11.5 was all we were getting for the longest time but with the bigger time gap in MK11 to MK12. I'm almost certain this is something completely different. Wether it'll be good or not is anyone guess. If they were just going to copy, paste MK11 all over again. We would have seen some gameplay by now IMO.

You might be right, and logically it makes sense. However this is WB with NRS we talking here, the most low effort quick cash grab just seems right up their alley at this point.

Also don't forget that NRS had received ton of shit for abusing contractors, plus Covid. Plus you can tell they had a fatigue. These could easily explain the "time gap".

SF6 and Tekken 8 have both showed plenty of gameplay despite their developers dealing with covid as well. I'm not saying it's not a factor but if other AAA developers can work around it why can't NRS? I do remember there being a big drama alert surrounding NRS employees being overworked during MK11 development. That could be a legitimate reason but unless a huge number of them quit or went on strike I'm not entirely convinced that's the reason they won't update us on that situation ether.

If I'm correct, SF6 and Tekken 8 were in development for far longer than MK. Way before Covid has hit. Yeah a lot of Software Developers have been working remotely, but if they're really abusing onsite contractors "crammed into a tiny room with no windows", that could definitely take its toll. Plus if they're doing an engine change? Yeeeaaahh....

I dunno, I think it'll go sorta like:

"Look at them shiny graphix! Unreal 5! You can see each strand and thread in that fabric and 4k pores on Johnny's schnozz and and....!"
"Cool, what else is new?"
"....You can now press a button to instantly finish AI fights! Also you can jump in Krypt and can buy any skins in store instead of RNG and Scorpion's back back 1 is now back up down left right 1+2, ..."

IGN says MK12 is launching this year just like SF6 If I'm not mistaken, I'll believe it when I see it but that's what they're saying.......I still think NRS has been using a heavily modded version of unreal engine 3. If that is indeed the case and their finally switching to unreal engine 5. Maybe they're having a hard time adjusting to it IDK. Most of the other developers who do use it aren't having this problem but like you said before...This is NRS we're talking about so who knows?

There is also a high chance of delay.

I can tell I am not crazy, when a lot of people (who aren't high on NRS farts) sense as well, that something feels off.
I wouldn't be surprised if they still were to use their UE3 engine. Converting to UE5 requires effort and remaking their tools. It would be easier to just depend on brand recognition.

Though I will laugh if they will try to make MK12 into live service game. Gods. That would fail horribly.

Apparently, Suicide squad kill the justice league is heavily rumoured to be delayed to later this year as well. Many people speculate it's due to the negative feedback the game received during it's latest showing. This might be one of the many reasons NRS are unwilling to show us anything on MK12 yet. It's almost as if people are getting tired of having this games as a service model shoved down their throats.

Oh it is delayed. Was announced couple of days ago.

Oh I think NRS just really doesn't like the idea of Live Service Games.
It is a type of game, you have to constantly update with a tight schedule. And you know how NRS is with consistent updates and communication....

I doubt rocksteady like it ether but WB doesn't care. They're in such a deep hole of debt right now they can literally see hell. It's all about the monies. I don't expect NRS game to be much different in that regard. MK11 was teetering on the live service model. It wouldn't surprise me.

And yet live service games are failing in droves. Just another addition to why Execs suck in Games Industry and shouldn't be the ones making decisions.

If there are no more variations, we should at least be able to customize movesets of characters and a new move unlocked via game currency.

I know this goes without saying but It's been that way ever since video games exsisted. "Execs" see video game IPs as nothing more than a trojan horse to lure customers in to extract as much money as possible. We've seen this fail time and time again but much like gambling in Vegas it doesn't stop big publishers from trying. That's why They're in so much debt now. They're all fighting for the same slice of pie that's getting smaller by the day.
