Filling out MKX's Factions

See, I'd be fine with that. I keep saying Sonya and Johnny being in the storyline for background purposes is fine but having them in the game? I'd hate that decision. I know they are legends and I usually go to bat for the old guard because the new characters tend to be super lame. Cassie looks promising, though, so having her overshadowed by her parents would be a bad move, if you ask me. Plus, doesn't she have moves from both of them anyway?

Some of Johnny's.
Cassie doesn't have the Ring Blast, Bicycle Kicks, Leg Grab, Square Wave Punch and Kiss, though, so there's no reason why Sonya can't be in.
As for Johnny, even if Cassie does have the nut punch and Shadow Kick, I'm pretty sure that NRS can still diversify him from Cassie with maybe some more serious / Seido moves, and let Johnny pass the torch to Cassie as the joke / goofy character from here on out.

But why use Johnny's moves?

I think they just weren't sure what to do with her as far as special moves go. You know what would have been cool? Giving Cassie a gun that hasn't been used before. I would have loved to see her with a shotgun or assault rifle. AK-47 for the win!

It's Sonya. We've seen a Cassie portrait and not a single one has shown her wearing a different costume. The only thing that has ever changed was her hair style. And to be honest, I liked the first one more than the one she has now, but it's not a complaint.

This is clearly Sonya in the picture for the Special Forces. The face looks completely different than Cassie's. Not to mention, every picture showing Cassie, she's always got a smug expression. This picture clearly shows a very serious looking woman, aka. Sonya.

It's Sonya

After seeing Kitana wielding Jade's staff in a Variation, I could imagine Sonya being nothing more than an alt for Cassie.

Except that Ed said that that won't be the case for Cassie and Sonya, in an interview with The Kombat Tether......

The Kombat Tether: Many fans are concerned with your talk of character descendants. They fear that their favourite characters will be succeeded by essentially clones with similar move-sets, when they could just have the original character. Is this something the team is being sensitive with?

Ed Boon: Right, yes. It never ceases to amaze me with the speculation that goes on. We love our fans and stuff like that and it's great that they're so into it but it just blows my mind when somebody hears 'Cassie Cage is in the game...' and then they assume that means 'well Sonya is not in the game!' and I don't know where they draw that conclusion and then they go 'Well if Sonya is not in the game that means Cassie is going to be a version of Sonya and she's gonna be skinned'. It's amazing but my advice would be don't speculate on that kind of stuff. *laughs*

Guess that settles that.
edit : it should also be mention that picture is of Sonya is a character select portrait.

I'm hoping that Cassie becomes popular enough for them to phase Sonya out. Again, I love the old guard but Sonya has grown stale. The only thing she's really done is feud with Kano. If they can't give her something new to do to freshen her up, I'd say it is time to hang up the boots. I honestly think that's what they'll do with her in MKX and she'll be possible DLC in future games.

I'll play story mode and arcade mode like arcade machines. I don't care about what is the new modes, also i never played chess kombat, motorkombat, puzzle whatever.. Mortal Kombat is arcade.

So it's confirmed that there are rewards for doing well in Faction MP. I gotta run for now, but I do feel that this busts the conversation wide open for my argument that NRS has a vested interest in keeping the factions balanced (and the best way to do that is via roughly equal character representation).

I agree. I'm almost positive that only the characters that represent each particular faction will be exclusive to that faction. All other characters will most likely be playable regardless of your chosen faction.

Wasn't Cyrax deconfirmed?

With the Comics and the leak that shows a character looking like Frost in her Lin Kuei outfit it's starting to look like that Frost will, like the Original Timeline, be a part of the Lin Kuei faction. Whether she's evil or not like the Original timeline? Who knows.

I don't think there's any reason to believe that any characters will be faction-exclusive. What's a lot more likely is that all five factions will factor heavily into the story, and be roughly equally represented in the game's plot.

As I suspected, this video confirms some of the rewards of doing well in Faction MP to include unlocking alternate costumes for characters. In the other video, Brian Goodman says that NRS is taking a lot of steps to prevent gaming the Faction system. So again, they obviously don't want everyone coming out of the story mode going "wow all the main characters were White Lotus, so I'm gonna play that faction!"

There's no question that the factions will be represented equally in the story. Everybody plays the same version. However, the video doesn't really say anything about character exclusivity in the Factions. It makes less sense to me to see Sub Zero in any faction that isn't the Lin Kuei. Having one or two exclusive characters per faction isn't that big of a game changer. There are plenty of neutral characters that could be used across all of the factions.
