do the backgrounds suck?

for some reason to me the wall on the right side of out world market place arena sends like it's the Kahn's Kolisium

That marketplace seems awfully out of place.
I want MK to feel like it's judgement day, pretty much everyone is dead, and the tournament is (yeah, I know MK is no longer a tournament, screw that) is deciding the fate of the whole universe.
Crowds in the background doing their own thing makes the fight feel awfully irrelevant and trivial, like Chun Li's stage in Street Fighter II.

I'm not agree with you.

In Street Fighter II, it was stupid that crowd did their shopping while Ken threw fireballs beside them.
But in Mortal Kombat, it has more sense because the Outworld is a world of violence. This stage shows that inhabitants of Outworld is accustomed to see fights everyday.

I agree with most of the people in here, MKX's backgrounds are great, every one of them. I'm kinda sick of the MK9's enviroments, because we have seen them since MK Deception, it's freakin' three games in a row.
I'm glad to see that MKX it's tryin' to find their own style, instead of tryin' to be MK2 again, 'cause I'm already sick of MK2.
And I'm surprised to see that the creator of this topic criticised Outworld Marketplace for being "all too bright colours", and aclaiming MK9's stages. MK9 was the most brighter MK of all! that's what makes the people think that is cartoony.

the arenas look awesome to me. and i see where u are coming from urker. i do agree with caines take on it.

It's Outworld dude

How many times do you think those people watch others get slaughtered and beaten?
That tiger in the middle probably snatches up 4 kids a week.

I know you're going to come back with "Stop using real life logic for a video game", but you're taking the game's lore out of context. It's completely normal for them. Some cultures are just used to seeing funked up shit. Like that video that surfaced a few years back of that Chinese girl getting ran over by a van. And it took like 2 minutes of people just walking past her before anybody checked to see if she was even alive?

That said though, I think the stage has horrible music. I think most of MK9 had garbage music and I think MKX will too. Dan Forden is just sucking all of the dick with these lame ass "EPIC ORCHESTRAL BLOCKBUSTER SUMMER MOVIE!" tracks. They all sound unoriginal and never stand out.

Remember how whacky and catchy MK3's street music was?

Before it lost all of it's personality and got turned into this, that you could find in any action B movie?

We usually don't agree on many things, but I'm 100% with you on this.

I'm pretty sure that Outworld is a pretty crazy place, and if we're going to start nit-picking what's real and what's not in MK, then people can't really rip each other's heads off their shoulders with their bare hands, much less slice someone in half, vertically, with a hat.
With some of this stuff NRS (and Midway) has always asked us to suspend some belief, in regards to MK.

Actually, what made me feel that MK9 was too cartoony was not in the brightness or whatever... But the character animations and designs. That comes down to error on the design team. I mean, look at Liu Kang... His body was ridiculous looking. Didn't come across as realistic in the slightest.

You know I did hear that MK X was gonna be darker and I did hear that a lot of people thought that MK9 was cartoony but for gods sake people let the darkness ease into the lore instead of shoving how gritty the games is down our throat, I mean seriously it sounds like you people want the first scene of the game have Johnny in a gravely voice shouting "WHERES THE TRIGGER". Also dark in tone doesn't mean everything is gonna be dark and black hell look at Black Lagoon that show had slavery, crime, and villian protaginsts but that show had dark comedy, bright backgrounds, and over the top action. I'm just saying let the darkness be subtitle instead of hitting us with a train

No offense but they both sound pretty meh, sure the newest one sounds like a B movie but the old one sounds like some half assed hip hop song from the 90s that they put into cartoons to make them more hip

Yeah, some proportions and textures in MK9 sadly sucked. Some of the textures up close (when zoomed in on by the camera in Story Mode) looked like from the 90s.

Exactly, but the classic one is recognizable.
I would never be able to pick the new one out of a set of similar tracks.

The classic one is recognizable because MK3 (the game) itself is "classic," and therefore the soundtrack by default is recognizable.

MK9's soundtrack was completely forgettable. The orchestral music just didn't stand out. I couldn't put a tune to the name of most stages in MK9's soundtrack.

It's recognizable because it's unique. It has that dirty beat and the sweet ass "Aww!" "Yeah!" vocals.

A BIG part of what makes it recognizable is that the game itself is a "classic."
MK1, II and 4 soundtracks are just as recognizable because those are classic games which people love.
The music itself doesn't have anything special to it, IMO, by today's standards, but I like it because it reminds me of the games and of that MK era.

What I tried to say about the outworld thing is that it doesn't have a "deciding the fate of the universe" vibe, in which everyone that's still alive should know what's going on, and there should be nothing more relevant than it.

About the tunes, yes, definitely in MK3 the music stopped being memorable.
The newer stuff doesn't have that "catchiness", that is, identifiable elements that stand out and stay with you in your head.

But why would people in Outworld be worried about that? No one is invading them. If it was in Earthrealm then you should have worried folks. But those people in Outworld arent in any danger.

Meh, you kinda have a point, but I always thought of it as deciding the fate of the whole universe, not just earthrealm.

You don't know if that's in the story or not, though.
For all we know, Quan Chi and Shinnok may plan to invade Outworld too in MK X.
Just because Outworld doesn't seem to be invaded, at that moment of the stage, doesn't mean that they won't be invaded later by those 2, or an even bigger, badder boss character.

We still don't know the story of MKX, but if Shinnok's plan does work then the Netherrealm should be invading Outworld sometime within the story. Just not at that point it seems.
