The other characters that I mentioned would sell a lot better as DLC than obscure nobodies, which is my point.
NRS makes games, but at the end of the day they're also a business.
They're not in the business to put obscure nobodies as DLC, and lose money.
Tremor would be a character that I would love to see, but he's not as popular as the other MK characters that I mentioned, and likely wouldn't make NRS that much money.
The point of DLC is to make money, and making money means selling the characters that they think the fans (not just the small hardcore bunch) will buy.
Actually I think Tremor would do very well. Sure, he's an obscure character... But for whatever reason, he became very popular within the MK fan base. People have been begging for Tremor for quite some time. And honestly, I and many others were shocked when he wasn't put out as DLC for MK9. I really don't think NRS is gonna pass on him again. There is high demand for Tremor and he would sell a lot better than Kitana, Jade and Shang Tsung, in my opinion. Shang Tsung especially. Again, he would be a disastrous DLC choice. He really isn't even that popular.
Obscure characters will not make as much money for them as the popular characters.
Hence, why they added Freddy in MK9 and Scorpion in Injustice.
Everyone knows who he is and he's 1 of the most (if not THE most) popular horror icon of all time.
Everyone knows Scorpion from MK, and he's their mascot.
Instant $$$$.
I don't think it was Freddy's popularity that made him successful in MK9. The announcement for Freddy was a bit shocking and confusing. He was an unusual choice for a game like Mortal Kombat. Honestly, I think people flocked to Freddy just out of curiosity before all else.
As for Scorpion, he's the face of Mortal Kombat as well as Ed Boon's all time favorite. He has been since the beginning (even if he wasn't marketed as such in the originals). Of course he got a DLC slot in Injustice. I would have been shocked if he didn't.
And I'm not saying popular characters are a bad choice. That's obviously not true. I just think they should aim for characters who already have a fan following, but haven't been experimented with much either. It makes sense to use the DLC slots in that way.
The main roster would be a better place to let those lesser known MK characters and NEW characters shine in MKX because (A) every game sold is guaranteed to have those characters on the main roster, giving them better exposure to everyone even in the arcade ladder and (B) more popular characters selling as DLC = more $$$.
I disagree. Personally, I would be very turned off by the announcement of Kitana or some other MK9 fallen combatant as DLC. I think a lot of people would... Save for the super die hards who live for these characters. DLC is not a make it or break it situation. The main game is where the big money comes into play. DLC is a chance to introduce new and exciting things... Not sh** that people have seen and played before.
I get that some people are overly comfortable with the familiar... But gamers in general are tired of the same old crap.
If NRS wants to include some of the MK9 characters that didn't make the initial cut, just work them in as secret characters or something. Making us pay extra for characters like Kitana, Jade, Shang Tsung or even Smoke and Kung Lao, is just dirty. These characters are dry as f*** now (save for maybe Smoke).
I think you'll find that fans are more open to new sh** than recycled garbage. MKX has already been hit with a "More of the same" comment. Lets not give them more reason to feel that way.
I just hope NRS is a little more daring this time around with the DLC.
