Catherine

I enjoyed the demo.

After I played it, I thought maybe I'll buy it, let me see if it's 800 points or 1200.

Then I realized this isn't an XBLA demo, it's a regular demo.

So I thought it was fun, but it's hard to justify $60 for a game that is just moving blocks and climbing towers. At least, that's all it seems to be. Maybe there's more to it?

Anyway, it seems like you all are really enjoying it, so maybe there is much more to the game than I was able to figure from the demo. If nothing else, it's at least a breath of fresh air.

It's a puzzle game wrapped within RPG elements. The story is a main selling point, in which your actions determine the outcome, so it does have replay value. The gameplay has replay value as well, with 2 player battle and a separate challenge tower with online leaderboards n stuff. So yes, I do believe it has enough content way over the initial 16-18 hours it'll take to beat.

However, I do find it harder and harder to justify spending $60 on ANY game right now.

I am almost through with it, really looking forward to the true ending, and alternatives!

What is Persona?

Dude, Persona has become a favorite RPG franchise. It started back on the PS1 days, and deals heavily with the occult and social interaction. Starting with Persona 3, it really turned up the social elements into a full blown social simulator, where you choose how you spend your time (studying, doing extracurricular activities in school, hanging with friends/making connections, leveling up in the dungeon). Most of what you see in Catherine is all inspired by this system, only more adult and of course much less varied. I highly recommend playing Persona 4, as it pretty much perfected this formula.

Can anyone comment on the 'fear factor' of the game? Would it scare me?

This is coming from a guy who was freaked out by Kingdom Hearts II

There is really nothing scary at all in this game. The "horror" aspects really just amount to a few freaky bosses and some gruesome death scenes. The overall tone of the game is kinda dark in an adult way though, revolving around death, psychological trauma, and the subconscious.....come to think of it, if a Disney game freaked you out, it might be a bit creepy to you :)

Just beat it. I got the true lovers ending. Overall I didn't think the game was too overly difficult, but I haven't played it on hard. Only on medium. It was frustrating at times and some where challenging. A lot of my death came from me being careless. The level I hated the most was the 8 level, for the same reason I don't like RE5. The story's twists didn't really surprise me, I kinda had a hunch after the first 2 levels of what was going on. I did like the bar parts of the game. I liked talking to everyone, and getting random drink knowledge. I thought that was one of the best parts of the game. Overall I enjoyed it but prolly won't play through it again, I'll watch the other endings on youtube, and glad I didn't buy it.

As far as it being scary, I can't really say it was. There is something that could be kinda horror movie scary in the bar, but it's not that bad. And that wasn't really that scary. Now a different kind of scary is the bosses. Not so much how they look, it just they are chasing you. That can be scary I guess. I could definately get your heart racing.

Second to last puzzle is tripping me out now.

Dah, thought that was the second to last puzzle. Finally beat it and got the True Lovers ending. What a memorable experience. I think I might have learned something about myself playing this game? One of the best games I have played in a long, long time.

About Boss...
Spoiler:
Did Notice his last name is Mutton?

That is why I loved this game, such underlying themes of symbolism.

Catherine (ATLUS & CriWare)

Anyone else played this absolutely bonkers platformer? It's got a lot of depth, and even on normal mode is pretty difficult (They had to make a patch to add a Super Easy mode because the game's so hard), and it's amazingly funny. I'm liking it a lot so far.

The basic premise is that you are Vincent, a 32-year old guy who's been seeing his childhood friend Katherine for a long time now, but has commitment issues. When she brings up the idea of marriage, he starts having bizarre nightmares which you play through with him as giant platformer puzzles. In the 'real world', he's also being seduced/manipulated by a girl named Catherine, set to a backdrop of a murder mystery. It's got multiple endings, good and bad, and a lot of references to other game series (Persona, for instance). Very deep game, imo. Not something you see every day.

Re: Catherine (ATLUS & CriWare)

This game is awesome. I loved it and I hate puzzles so everytime he went to sleep and I had to do the puzzles it really did feel like hell . The characters are awesome as well. I highly enjoyed this game.

Re: Catherine (ATLUS & CriWare)

I forgot to mention also that the voice work is excellent. I'm a fan of several of the voice actors involved with it, and have met one of them in person before.

Re: Catherine (ATLUS & CriWare)

I have that game, great one, never finished it tho, stuck on the 6th level I think and I was playing this on easy lol. The baby is my favorite boss.

Re: Catherine (ATLUS & CriWare)

Yeah, I'm only on the final floor of the 2nd level (Prison of Despair?), with the giant (Katherine's?) hand...so far, so hard. I know this game is going to gnaw the shit out of me.

Re: Catherine (ATLUS & CriWare)

Was planning on picking it up @ release but my money fell elsewhere. Definitely on my wishlist though.

Re: Catherine (ATLUS & CriWare)

Out of curiousity, why don't you like anime? I think that's kind of a silly reason to discount a game as good as Catherine.

Re: Catherine (ATLUS & CriWare)

That's a shame. It's just an art style, really. There are so many different genres of it that I can't help but feel you're missing out.

Speaking of anime, this game uses anime cutscenes for important story moments mixed with in-game graphics that are remarkably similar to the cutscenes. All in all, very smooth transitions between gameplay and the storytelling element. My only criticisms thus far are the sound (the cutscenes are VERY loud compared to the rest of the game) and the difficulty.

Success! Re-challenged the first stage on Normal and got a perfect score. :) I am VICTORIOUS! You hear that? Victorious!

Bumping this thread.

I was watching a P4 clip and saw on in the related videos a part in the Persona 3 PSP that Vincent makes an appearance at a certain part. Its pretty cool. They don't show his name, I think its cause Catherine wasn't out yet at the time of P3P came out.
Stil pretty cool nonetheless. Off topic but I saw P3P at gamestop today for $35. Jesus christ that more than the PS2 FES edition of P3.
