Avatar is a 2009 science fiction film written and directed by the acclaimed director, James Cameron. The story is set in the 22nd century where humans have discovered a precious resource called 'unobtanium' on the lush habitable moon of a gas giant known as Pandora situated in Alpha Centuari star system. However the expansion of mining activities threatens the continued existence of the indigeneous, humanoid alien race called Na'vi and in order to gain their co operation, the humans developed the 'Avatar Program' where genetically engineered Na'vi bodies are controlled by a remotely located human through their minds to interact with the Na'vi. However even after years of deliberating, the Na'vi refuse to move out of their homes and this is where Jake Sully, a wheelchair bound former marine volunteers for the avatar program in place of his twin brother who was killed back on earth in a last ditch effort on the part of the humans for peaceful talks before they use sheer force.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time mainly because of how it stirs up and evokes a lot of emotion and also the rich culture and world of Pandora and its inhabbitants. On seeing the trailer for the first time I was like 'WTH are these blue cat creatures everywhere!?!?' but was completely taken aback on seeing it in the theatres. It is also the best visually stunning movie I have seen as well. It went on to become the highest grossing movie of all time (excluding mechandise sales and not adjusting for inflation) beating out even Titanic.
I think this movie will be a hit and miss for many, mainly because the plot seems generic to some extent, which I do agree with as well. However in movies such as Pocahontas and Dances with the Wolves I never really felt immersed in their worlds or felt for the characters as much as I did in Avatar. Anyways what are your opinions on this movie? Do you like it or hate it and do give reasons for the same.
