Are the reveals lacklustre this time around?

i totally get where your coming from. i think it was a huge mistake for NRS to introduce 3 new characters right off the bat and give zero backstory for them. and the fact they look like re-skinned injustice characters did not help.

so fans are left thinking who are these people and how do they tie into MK? dont need the whole backstory just a little something on each character coz at the minute in my eyes theyre just reskinned injustice models that i dont care for.

i think each character reveal should have some backstory or info on why theyre in the game.

I loved all the MK games up until Trilogy. After that, it wasn't until MK9 that I started to care about the series again. My biggest gripe is just the horrible new characters they come up with. I don't know how to put it in proper words, there was just an 'MK thing' about all the characters up until after Trilogy. There are some characters here and there afterwards that I didn't mind, I guess, but, I don't know if it makes any sense what I am trying to get across here (I know what I mean, anyway, lol), I just don't get the MK vibe from most new characters.

i know exactly what your saying. i believe this is because one artist (john tobias) designed all the characters for all the MK games up to trilogy. all characters since then were designed by other people just 'trying' to create characters with that MK vibe and failing everytime.

so your right in thinking the new characters just dont fit.

i dont like the 3 new reveals for MKX. theyre a little better than the past new characters in previous games but thats not saying much they still dont feel like MK characters to me.
ferra torr is more like a soul calibour character (astroth)
D'vorah more like a comic book character (wasp)
the other dude Kotal looks like something out of a god of war game (kratos)

ive said this before but the only way to get new characters in MK that genuinely feel like they belong in that world is for NRS to re-hire John Tobias. This new MKX game would of been the perfect time to do so and judging by the new character reveals its clear they need him back big style. or at least someone with equal talent in concept art

but for me until they get john tobias back on the team i will always worry about MKs future characters

Reskinned Injustice characters? Huh? I've played Injustice and I fail to see how the new MK characters are just reskinned superheroes/villains.

The characters in Tao Feng looked very generic, what makes you think Tobias still got it?

However, I must admit that D'Vorah reminds me of Raven and Torr kinda moves like Bane and Grundy.

Are we pretending that Stryker, Nightwolf, etc., were all the pinnacles of MK characters?

We hated them when they were first introduced. I think a lot of people were also disappointed that the ninjas were replaced by cyborgs in MK3.

I said it once and I'll say it again I'm glad these new characters don't look like Mortal Kombat, they are more diverse in body types, inspired by cultures other then Asian, and expand the lore with introducing new species also what wrong with the characters looking they come from a comic book because comic books are freakin awesome. Comic books have people who solve crime by eating the evidence, command people with just there voice, turn motorcycles and muscle cars into demonic version of itself, a superhero who fights enemies straight out of John Carpenters The Thing, a rockabilly wizard and a hot chick who kills horror movie killers

Everyone hates newcomers at first in any media (K-Pop, anime, TV shows, etc.). So just give them time and the audience would generally accept them.

are you talking about Hack/Slash?

anyway, I think the characters look like more time and effort were put into them, except Torr. he's too much like Bane. I also think that the reveals are not a lackluster. we got almost a third of the roster already.

I hope in future reveals they don't spoil their x-ray or fatality. or I hope at least one of the two would be left out.

Yes, yes I was got one paperback and I'm planning on finishing it

Why do people keep saying Torr is too much like Bane?
Because they're both big? Give NRS credit for finally putting in characters with different body sizes.

Bane fights like Luchador, Torr fights more like a gorilla. He even has a Kong roll in his Lackey variation lol

THANK YOU!

I really don't get the criticism that these new characters look like Injustice LOL? It's like saying that any sumo character will end up looking like Honda. That's just the generic image of a sumo design. Just because they may have the same height, weight or colour pattern in their clothing, that doesn't make them the same character. I've still actually failed to see where Kotal is similar to Ogre. First, their designs are not very similar at all, apart from the obvious Aztec influences. They don't even have the same skin colour! People should really get over with it by now. I am so glad they're finally doing characters that look like NOTHING in Mortal Kombat universe! Enough of pseudo-ninjas that look NOTHING like a traditional ninja except for the stereotypical image that Americans have of them. I still cringe when people say Scorpion looks like a ninja zzzzz Enough of half-naked chicks that use toilet paper to hide their vulvas and breasts!

My biggest issue with Deception (which was a FANTASTIC game, no matter how crappy Mortal Kombat was in its 3D era) was how bland and generic the new characters were. Apart from Havik, Hotaru, Ashrah, Dairou and - in a way - Shujinko, the rest was pretty much your average Joe and Jane Does, but even those five were not THAT unique. This is why I still liked the Deadly Alliance newcomers more (to whom NRS seem to hold a grudge up till this day), but I am glad they're taking a risk with these new characters and no matter what you might nitpick, they look and play different. 'nough said for me.

You have to face it, people will complain no matter what they get. New characters? Nah, they'll talk about how unoriginal and how they are just copies. Adding back stage interactables? Nah, they'll just forget we had stage interactables before and say NRS is being lazy and copying Injustice.

Yes, you're right, stage interactables were in MK before, how well did those games do? Aren't most fans trying to forget those 3d games ever existed? MK9 plays like a traditional fighter, that's why a lot us like it. Ask any MK9 players what they don't like about Injustice? They'll answer you the stage interactables and the absence of dash cancelling. NRS isn't trying to copy Injustice, they added those things, cause they believed the casual players would like them. Unlike Capcom, they don't want their new games to play like their previous ones, but innovation is not always the right choice, new does not equal good.

yeah but don't you think Tobias had a much easier job back then. they were just copy and paste characters with different colors...all he really had to do was find out what color/name matched what power

Well, news flash to those people: you don't have to use interactables. Its not even like they impact the game a lot. If they want to play seriously, they can play in an arena without interactables like a training room.

Look at Super Smash Bros. In tournaments, people play in Final Destination (a stage without any interactables) with no items. Its been more than 10 years and Smash is still a headliner at popular fighting game tournaments like EVO.
