which characters make Mortal Kombat what it is? Basically, which characters instantly spring to mind? Which ones have made the biggest impact on you?

For me, it would have to be Shao Kahn, Mileena (she was the first character I ever played with), and Kitana.
 
Scorpion and Sub-Zero are the Ryu and Ken of the series.

Raiden has the most memorable catch phrases.

Liu Kang gets all the credit, unless he's dead.

The Original 7 - Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Kano, Sonya and Raiden.
Just about every other character on the roster could be interchangeable for me.

ABSOLUTE MUST haves in any MK game, for me, are:
- HUMAN Sub-Zero
- Scorpion
- Liu Kang
- Raiden

In that order too.
An MK game without HUMAN Sub-Zero or Scorpion would feel to me like a chocolate chip cookie without the chocolate chips.
Sure, at the end of the day it's still a plain old cookie, but the ingredient that makes it what it is would be missing.
I may get the game when it goes down to $20, but I wouldn't pre-order it.
I know it makes me "less of an MK fan" to some people here, but f*** it.
Those 2 are the Ken and Ryu of MK.

I am a hardcore MK fan. I buy no matter the roster because I love all of (most of) the game's mythos.






But if a character could define MK, it is definitely Goro. Every person here remembers the first time they saw the beast. His look, his damage and his story all embody the same thing, over the top. Which is what Mortal Kombat has been about since the day the project began
 
Goro can suck a duck.

If anything, it's Shang Tsung or Shao Kahn, as far as the boss embodiment of MK is concerned.
 
You can't have game without both of these guys. Mk3 tried it, only having sub, and it just didn't feel right.

After thinking about it I would have to agree that Goro is another character. We've always wanted to play as him, which led to the creation on sheeva, and there is always a person like him to fight before the last fight. Well except for I think 4 and deadly alliance. I don't remember if there was another boss fight before the final one in those
 
I wasn't talking about bosses, so you can scurry down to your local pond and fellate a quacker as well

Goro was in 4 and DA had Moloch. Deception is the one that didn't have a real Sub Boss. Just Noob-Smoke

He was talking about Sub-Zero being in MK3 and not Scorpion.
He wasn't talking about Goro, so you can go and fondle a mallard.

All MK 1-Trilogy characters + Frost, Fujin, Reiko, Quan Chi, Scarlet and maybe Moloch who could be pretty great as a sub boss again.
 
Goro was in 4? I remember him being in the console version but not in the arcade version. I was thinking molach was in deception, that gen of mk games kinda blur together for me. Loved them when they came out, but just don't remember one from another now.
 
It's really the people who have an enemy, and strive to defeat them.
Mileena and Kitana.
Raiden and Shao Khan.
Scorpio and Sub-Zero.
Sonya and Kano.
 
shang tsung, liu kang, raiden, sub-zero and my main man scorpion make mk what it is. also, commander and bbblp, either stop rustling each other's feathers or go gag on a gaggle of geese.
