For those complaining about this game being a re-hash

Well, I don't care if that many of old characters coming back, since it is more about gameplay for me in fighting games. It's confusing since for some of the users new characters seem to be bigger deal than the variations and their balance, competitiveness of the game or online netcode for instance.

E3 was the first proper place to reveal MKX last year, therefore it's pretty safe to show some new characters and the most iconic couple (Scorpion & Sub-Zero of course) as well. It's wise because E3 trailers are usually stuff where people starts to wonder "wait, there's nothing new?". New characters shown, interactables, variations etc. got all revealed and the most casual MK players got satisfied. E3 trailer could also be the only one people see before launch trailer is released.

Then, there's a time where it's safe to reveal old favorites, since older fans of the series, as well as the ones that jumped in with MK9, are concerned if the character they loved to play, will return. After these reveals are got, it's pretty safe to assume that if not next, the one after will be entirely new character.

Finally, there's talked story mode and full roster. Boon himself has said he was surprised how big MK9 eventually got and how well it sold, so I think Netherrealm had to re-think killed characters again, since series and characters got more popularity with MK9. Kitana, Quan Chi, Kung Lao, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Scorpion and Kano are all pretty well known and have shared popularity so it just makes sense to include them than characters like Stryker, Nightwolf, Sindel or Jarek (lol), that haven't had that much to offer. Also, I wouldn't want to use this sentence since I absolutely hate it, but let's face it, majority (even though MK9 got it nice and people enjoyed it more than the usual story mode in fighting games), don't care a about it. My friend for instance who have played MK9 tons of hours with me, have never finished it.

And since there's been instance that has warned about game not selling well because of a roster, there's Street Fighter III: New generation, 2nd Impact and 3rd strike, that partly got failed because loved characters like Zangief, Guile and Bison got all replaced by terrible shit like Remy, Twelve and Necro.

Really? I thought SF3 didn't sell well because arcades were dying and the parry system was too complicated for some.

It was also ported to a console that flopped so badly that it made Sega a 3rd party company within 2 years.

But the roster was no doubt a factor in its failure. And I find it appalling that we have fans who want to copy the SF3 roster approach, thus ignoring the results.

Bringing in new characters is one thing. Bringing in past characters *who died in the canon story* after a promise of new characters is a slap in the face.

Jesus, I just spent about 35 minutes skimming this thread and there are way too many people getting so butt-hurt over things in this game. Returning characters, story, and even statements NRS made probably several years ago.

We're talking about Mortal Kombat, a cheesy tournament fighter that prides itself on NOT TAKING ITSELF TOO SERIOUSLY. But there's about 5-7 people in this thread who seem to be taking it very seriously. I was almost in tears reading some of this stuff, laughing so hard.

"Oh, well NRS said this and this about killing off characters in MK9." Yeah, but I guarantee you those statements were made before they had a slightest idea of where they wanted to go with the story for this game. Probably in 2011-2012. I also guarantee that the story has gone through several iterations and changes over the past few years of development as well.

Calm the hell down and stop throwing a fit over the story of a game because it's not going the way you want it to.

Agreed. Except for that last bit. They made those statements when they revealed Mkx

The comment about killing off much of the cast to make way for new characters was made last year near the start of the promotional campaign. They already knew where they were going with this game.

Okay, my bad. I only check these forums about once a month or so, so I don't keep up with all of the statements and everything since this game isn't one of my assignments for work.

Everyone better play nice, seen some REALLY questionable posts and actions about this thread, consider this the final warning.

all I gotta say is that this is a game where there's magic, wizards and dragons and sh!t.so if a mothaf#ckr dies then gotdammit all that needs to be done is call one of them wizards over so he can cast a magic spell n sh!t and (whallaaaa) that f#cker is back kicking a$$ better then ever! so, im sorry to burst ya bubbles but surprise!!!!! nobody ever!!!!!! dies in MK, as a matter of fact I heard the next mk game is gonna be called Immortal Kombat! so ya mothaf#ckas can get the picture.

I could not have put it better myself.

When MK9 was made, it very much a make or break for the franchise, and so that is probably why they went all out with the overly revealing females, nostalgia and reboot to bring back fan favourites. The MK team would NEVER risk the games success over the authenticity of the storyline.

I don't cling to the words of each developer either, but anyone who was paying attention during the game's first reveals would have most likely heard it. lol

Yeah, I was working on stuff for other titles during E3, so I didn't watch the reveal.

But my statement still stands, people are taking a lot of these things way too seriously when MK itself is basically the Jerry Springer of fighters in terms of seriousness. Fun to play, great with friends, but over-the-top and self-aware of it's craziness.

Babalities, anyone?

For those who want a complete new roster and new characters just go and play a new game. You will find a lot of new characters there. Mk is famous for its characters. Now imagine for example we don't get reptile because there is a new shitty character that nobody knows about to replace reptile. I think 8-9 new characters is more than enough

Well it does seem pretty much every pre-MK3 will make a comeback maybe except Shang Tsung & Baraka so it might end up feel like a rehash after MK9 and will not offer as much new stuff as Ed Boon originally promised...

You see, that would be swell. But MK is like the only fighter of it's kind. I absolutely loathe the way SF, Tekken and DoA feels. It's not as fast or as fluid as MK. If there are other fighters out there that feels like MK, please... Point me in their direction. And no, Super Smash Brothers is not an option. I want a good fighting game, not a seizure inducing nightmare.

^I swear to god some of you are this entirely! If you don't like MK the way it is and you nag and complain excessively ON AN INTERNET FORUM in hopes that somehow someway NRS will miraculously hear you out and mold the series to your liking the Please get a f***ing life. Don't play MK, Don't buy MK, and Don't talk about MK. Leave the rest of us the f*** alone.
