New characters could also just mean completely new.
I think Boon will show Scorpion, Sub-Zero, 1 or 2 post-MK3 characters and 2 new characters.
 
they have to do new characters....They havent made a new one since mkd....they cant just keep re-booting the series... they just cant
 
Taven and Daegon in Armageddon. The last two new characters they made.

Also they have plenty of characters to go through before they need to start that.

They started a story that picked up at Armageddon. It went back to day 1 of the first game. How would they explain a new character if they haven't even gotten back to real time yet? They can finish up this game with characters from MK4, Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon.

Then if they make another they can start bringing out new characters.

Ed Boon even said on Twitter that the MK X story would be a mix of a continuation from MK9 as well as an original story, which heavily implies new characters.

Gosh, knowing Boon that could mean 1000 things. Don't get me wrong, I would love some new characters. I won't get my hopes too high though.
 
Yeah he can tell you a millions things in 1 word some times. It's crazy. He also hides things well in his words so then later it's like "see I told you all this already but no one was paying attention!"

That sounds pretty black and white that there will be 2 completely new characters at E3, to me.
 
He's not wrong but he answers your yes and no question without saying yes or no which means everything is still a secret.

"Are we going to see new characters?"

That was the question, but no one knows if they'll be playable or just in the story or background. We only know that we will see them.

What's the reasoning for telling people that new characters will be revealed at E3, only for them to be in the background?
Non-playable boss character(s)? Sure, I could see that.
Unplayable new background characters, though? Makes NO sense.
