Mortal Kombat 9?

So the upcoming mortal Kombat is Mortal Kombat 9 but how did they get that number? As I can recall every MK game is as follows:

MK
MK2
MK3
UMK3
MK:Trilogy
MK4
MKgold
MK:Deadly Alliance
MK:Deception
MK:Armegedon
MKvsDC
MK:Mythologies
MK: Shaolin monks
And the various versions of these games ported to Handhelds.

So how do they get 9 UMK 3 and Trilogy are just MK3 with more characters same with MK gold, Shaolin monks and Mythologies are action adventure games featuring MK characters and mythos, and MK vs DC is a crossover game. so if we just go by the basic numbered MK's we have 7

MK1
MK2
MK3
MK4
MK5:DA
MK6:Deception
MK7: Armegedon

So what is the other game?
 
MK 1
MK 2
MK 3 (UMK 3 and Trilogy are updates to MK 3)
MK 4 (MK: Gold is an update to MK 4)
MK 5 (Deadly Alliance)
MK 6 (Deception)
MK 7 (Armageddon)
MK 8 (MK vs DC. Although it's really not canon to the MK storyline)
MK 9 (MK 1 thru U MK 3. Post-Armageddon time-travel storyline)
 
its kinda annoying how the official name is just mortal kombat, because when you search it, all your gonna get is things from MK1, so its pretty much pointless because now you have to either search mortal kombat 9 or mortal kombat (2011)
 
Mortal kombat 2011 is the 9th addition to da mortal kombat saga thats why its called mk9
thats da name of this project at NRS But it is really a reboot of Mortal kombat so on da cover of the Game it will say "Mortal kombat"
 
I still don't get why MK vs DC is considered "Mortal Kombat 8". That title has nothing to do with the previous installments.

Mortal Kombat Rebirth is also fine, although "The MK" is slightly better.
 
Pretty sure Trilogy would be standalone. Before Midway started on MKvsDCU, they codename the next game "MK9'" already and were already working on it before DC walked onto their doorsteps.

Well, I could've sworn they did.
 
I think the only reason the website is themortalkombat.com is because mortalkombat.com isalready a website.
 
why "the mortal kombat" ? that doesn't really sound right. come on say ot with me THE MORTAL KOMBAT leaves a weird taste in your mouth. kind like onions an peanut butter sandwiches with anchovy paste and crushed doritos. personally I like the title mortal kombat. I always hoped they would bring it back to the beginning again.

It's been stated on several occasions by the team that the game's official name is just Mortal Kombat.
