While the Mortal Kombat universe has been dormant for the last few months, aside from the smattering of news about Ultimate Mortal Kombat for Nintendo DS, we're beginning to see some signs of activity at the house of Mortal Kombat. Lately, we have started to hear a few rumblings around the Chicago-based developer in regards to the next title in the Mortal Kombat franchise, aka Mortal Kombat 8. The MK Team has in the past gone on the record in stating the the next Mortal Kombat game for this generation's consoles will feature a totally reinvented formula than the previous console-specific Mortal Kombat titles. Recently, the direction that Midway is considering on taking their most prized franchise has started to take shape.

A post on the IGN Boards (highlighted by a MK Online user), brought up the prospect that Midway's next Mortal Kombat title will straight up be a Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics fighting game, in the spirit of the Marvel vs. Capcom series of fighting games. While this rumor has been around in various iterations ever since X-Men vs. Street Fighter was released in 1996, it appears that this latest reincarnation seems to carry a bit more weight this time around. As incredulous as this rumor has sounded ever since it first made the rounds more than ten years ago, TRMK has confirmed from our own sources that the next Mortal Kombat game for the current generation of consoles - Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 - will indeed be a "Versus" style game.

While we were unable to confirm the DC Comics angle proposed by the IGN Boards message, we do know that the game will feature another well-known established intellectual property. It seems unlikely that the DC Comics license will appear along side a franchise known for its gruesome fatalities; however, the MK Team did state that they were intent on "reinventing everything from the ground up" in order to "wipe the slate clean". Therefore, the idea that the game will not feature fatalities in the traditional Mortal Kombat style is not as far fetched as it initially sounds.

Early this year, series co-creator, Ed Boon, did go on the record to state that the series will feature a darker and grittier art direction and game presentation, inspired by the hit Xbox 360 title, Gears of War. The DC Comics universe fits within this style with their recent reimaging of their Batman and Superman franchises in the movie theaters. But until we hear definitively who the other partner is in the Mortal Kombat Versus game, we can only speculate as to who we will see Scorpion and Sub-Zero fighting against on our Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in late 2008.

Holy shit...I dont know what to feel....excited? confused? sad? disappointed? Is it gonna be 2-d? Or 2-d and a half (a la MK4)? Oh dear...

I think that the next game should be Mortal Kombat vs. KILLER INSTINCT. Both are great games and I would like to see which game is the better of the two.

I love vs games, but there is no other fighting series that fits with MK, especially as most of them are japanese and MK is western. Amd seeing as EA holds he DC comics rights at the moment, and the MK comics were made by lesser known publishers, I see that being very unlikely. I think we should have a MK vs Midway game, featuring characters like Psi-Ops' Nick Scryer and The Suffering's Torque. We haven't had a decent DC comics fighting game simce Justice League Task Force on the Genesis though, so I'd love that. Any game where I can play as Batman (apart from Dark Tomorrow, I refuse to acknowledge that game exists) is a winner for me. If I can play as Batman and Scorpion as a Tag Team, I'd most likely suffer a gonadular explosion.

are they talking about two different games, or are they saying MK8 will be a MK vs another brand type game? Cos if that was the case i would be extremely dissapointed.

DC should try to make a DC vs Capcom. That kind of game fits so well with the SF series-type of games. No disrespect to Capcom or SF, but thats just the truth.

I wouldnt mind a Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter game, 2D in HD. But as for MK8 i want what was rumored.....new characters with only a few to live past MKA. MK on its own. It dont have to be vs style. I would enjoy a god of war type mortal kombat game that looks like gears with cool levels.

That would slay... but i don't think i'm not as lucky to see such a thing. Personally, i think if MK "cross-overed" with any other property besides KI, i would be disappointed. Come on, do you really think ol' Superman is gonna rip somebody's spine out? Nope.

Yeah but Lobo would be awesome in MK. Even if the next MK is a versus title, it won't be MK8, just as Capcom vs. SNK wasn't Street Fighter 4. We'll still get MK8 as promised. I think Midway just want to cash in on the popularity of the Capcom vs. series. Capcom vs. SNK 2, widely revered as the best 2D beat-em-up ever anyone? Anyone? And before anyone says that MKII was the best ever, I'm going by general opinion of gamers on a whole.

From what we're hearing, this "Versus" game is going to be MK8, not some offshoot like Shaolin Monks or anything like that. The main MK Team is on this game.

None the less, I love crossover games and I'm looking forward to this, and it would come to no surprise if yet again I'm in the minority of so-called MK fans who actually like this when it comes out.

The MK team has collaborated with Epic Games in the past with Unreal Championship 2. Seeing as how Midway is the publisher of Unreal Tournament III and Mortal Kombat 8 is using the Unreal engine, I see this as the most likely candidate from a legal stand-point. The "tournament" in the Unreal universe is also what I would consider "dark and gritty." I just hope they don't try to intertwine the two universes story-wise. Mortal Kombat has always been unclear as to the physical location of the realms and adding more planets/realms into the mix isn't going to clarify the matter.

Hopefully, the game won't be camp, since there is DC characters, and maybe no fatalities! Fatalities were one of my favorite game moments! Now the series will seem camp!!!

What would truly kick ass is a MK vs SC soul calibur is pretty awesome, and its a 3-d fighter like MK. that would be a good match, i'd go buy it the first day just to have shao kahn fight nightmare lol
