According to
IGN, no console is safe for the
Mortal Kombat franchise as
Midway let out the secret that it plans on publishing a version of
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for the
Nintendo DS. From the developers of
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for
Xbox Live Arcade, the
Nintendo DS version will feature
WiFi for
Internet and Local Play and also feature
Mortal Kombat: Deception's mini-game,
Puzzle Kombat.
Ed Boon spoke with
IGN in
an interview with the series co-creator.
IGN: Why the arcade game and not the MK: Armageddon design?
Ed Boon: We've been fortunate enough to have some great success bringing back the "old-school" MK games to some of the newer consoles. We've had great online playing versions of MK2 and MK3 on the Xbox 360 and the PS3. The DS has never had an MK game before so we thought it was a perfect fit. Since UMK3 has already come out for the home, we wanted to also offer something that the previous versions didn't have so we are including Puzzle Kombat. I'm not entirely sure we would be able to fit all of MK Armageddon on a DS cartridge.
In addition, the
MK Team is highly involved in the creative input for
Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the
Nintendo DS. They are still working on ideas on how to fully utilize the handheld's dual screens and perhaps incorporate the touch-sensitive input. Until then, we all wait with extreme anticipation until the title's release in
November 2007. Stay tuned as there will more than likely be more information coming out of the
E3 Media & Business summit in almost two weeks.
