Xbox One without Kinect Pros & Cons...

So I'm all in likely gonna buy a Next-Gen console for MKX. I've been a Microsoft/Xbox guy for a while now, so I'm definitely getting the Xbox One.

My question is, now that they dropped integral Kinect support, what are the pros and cons of getting an Xbox One without Kinect? Not just in the gaming aspect, but the overall functionality of the console.

Any help/ideas would be appreciated, fellow TRMKers, thanks!

No Kinect = 10% more resource power for the console. You can't utilize that 10% but developers could make A LOT! of use with that extra 10%. Just all depends how it's utilized. I have XO and I love it personally. Don't know much about PS4 though.. And like you, I've been Xbox since Day 1 Xbox Original/Halo: CE

I bounced back and forth con consoles. I had a psone, ps2, and then went to 360. But now I have a PS4.

Xbone pros: no kinect spycam, same price as ps4. Cool exclusives.
Xbone cons: none, after the removal of kinect.

Kinect is either really awesome, or useless to some people. My friend loves his, and he's a pretty hardcore gamer. He just likes using it for navigation, so I don't believe it's worth the extra $100 unless you have money to blow.

Spy cam? What? --

I literally only use my Kinect feature for Skype calls that I rarely ever make. I'm kind of upset knowing that they now sell the console without it.

Plain and simple... If you don't plan on using it much, please spare yourself the money.

My Kinect has never touched my XB1.

My friend uses his regularly though. It's pretty cool to see him walk into the room and say "Xbox One" and the Xbox will turn his TV on with it. The voice commands work really well most of the time and he can fly through the menus without having to use buttons. Even switch back and forth between channels on his television, then go right into Titanfall without ever touching a button.

Whether or not you should get one depends on how much that impresses you. I couldn't give a shit less, buttons don't bother me so the Kinect is still worthless in my eyes.

Thanks for your help so far guys. So, apart from gaming, will the TV functionality, Apps, etc. be less useful without Kinect?

I've owned both X1 and Ps4 since launch, so i thought i'd chime in.

1st statement, the ps4 IS VERY superior to the xbox one... it just is. better hardware, its faster at everything...yadda yadda yadda.... so what, i play my xbox one more than my ps4.... i only own baseball for my playstation, but i have played several games (assassins creed, need for speed, nba2k15)...

i use my xbox one more because, well, xbox live is and has always been, pure sweetness... there's no flaws in XBL...

as far as the kinect pro's/con's... well i've been a pretty serious gamer for like 20 years (i'm 28 now, still have my original NES).... and i enjoy the handiness of the kinect... it's really slick to just say a command and have it happen, while playing games, while talking to your friends, while doing ANYTHING. turn your system on/off, invite friends, change chat channels, browse the net, apps...etc the list goes on.

that said, i'd still love to save a hundred bucks by not having kinect, but i mean, if money isn't a concern, you might as well get it. lemme point out one thing that makes it all worthwhile.

you know those 25 digit codes for DLC you get, and you type in each little letter and then at the end, like 6 hrs later, its like 'oh hey, you typed that shit in wrong, redo the entire code and figure out if that letter is an I, 1, or L.... lol".... nah, now you just hold a card up for the kinect to see and it instantly adds that to the download queue.

another thing that's neat...depending how techy you are... since kinect recognizes you, as soon as you leave the room, it instantly dims the TV.... like wise, when you enter the room, it brightens the tv...

can't find what you're looking for? "xbox go to "insert app here"... and that's handy because there is no quick guide menu like on xbox 360, where you could just press the guide button on the controller and navigate your xbox.... now you need to go to the main menu(dashboard) and search for the app... if you wanna check download status of a game, you actually need to go into a program that shows you the games on your system... OR, you can just say "xbox go to games and apps"....

i guess i'd recommend the kinect, but that call is yours.. if you play solo, and none of your friends play XBL, a ps4 is prob a better choice.

The only thing I disagree with personally is how you said very superior and then you mention Hardware. Okay well, .. What about software?.. I know hardware is important but what I feel is, for example. When you look at both ps3 and x360 when they first released and see them now. x360 has went through thousands of improvements [features, etc.] ps3 not nearly as many. Still looks the same.. In the long run I think Xbox (once again) will be the better console in it's own way. It's set up to be continuously improved (Microsoft has been on point with the monthly updates). in 10 years it will be the better console just like x360 is to the ps3. And sure you can get into native 1080p (ps4) but the funny thing is lol, not every game for ps4 is in 1080p as promised (the more notable games aren't native). But I personally am not that concerned about graphics, I'm a gameplay, I like a game for what it actually is kinda guy lol. And yes Xbox Live will always be the better online service, especially with the mass amounts of dedicated servers we have. Sorry but Sony has no good exclusive games to offer. X1 on the other hand is looking AWESOME for the next 2-3years when it comes to games. I know what i'm saying sounds a bit one-sided. I don't want to come off as a X1 fanboy (I bought PS3 for one reason. MK9) but at the same time I feel like people forget that Hardware is as only as powerful s the software you make to use that hardware. Not saying Sony's OS is weak, just saying it kinda looks the same (compared to X1). Like I said in 10 years I bet you the X1 dashboard wont look like what we're seeing now. Well, okay maybe since M$ is using the same type of UI across their products (Windows, X1, ...)

Personally I LOVE Kinect. I walk in the room, it signs me in. Wife done watching TV okay cool "Xbox go to Watch Dogs" oh look no load time i'm still in the middle of my games session where i'm breaking out of a high security place. Aaaah i'm done for a bit lets watch fresh prince "Xbox go to Netflix" BOOM fresh prince LOL I'm still trying to figure out how Kinect sucks or how it's not useful. I personally love Kinect. Can't find controller my daughter hid it on me, no problem still have an app for remote, voice commands & hand gestures to navigate.

Just my actual $0.02

PS I love how people refer to the Kinect as a "spycam" ...cuz you know, it's not like our laptops, computers, cell phoness, tablets, and telecommunications can't be tapped right LOL get over yourselves with that non-sense. If the gov or whoever is "spying" on us they've been doing it well before X1 lol #factsonly

Guys I said pros and cons of XB1 with or without Kinect, as I am 150% getting a XB1. I never said compare it to PS4. Please don't make this into one of those threads, the last thing we need is a fan girl sissy fight.

I have a X1, but the PS4 will likely have more 3rd party controllers for fighting games (fightpads, arcade sticks). Good luck using that awful d-pad on the X1 controller, I had to resort to paying a modder to build me a custom converter.

I actually think the kinect as a means of switching around apps and games is pretty awesome. However if you are one of the tinfoil hat guys who think the government is using it to watch you, you can still get around without it just fine.

Its always awesome though, me playing Killer Instinct, when someone pops in the room and wants to watch something "Xbox go to netflix"
Then we watch netflix for like an hour, they go off somewhere else, "Xbox go to killer instinct" and its still where I left it off!
To me thats pretty sweet

Can you still switch back and forth between games and apps without Kinect? And if so, will you pick up right where you left off, like Killer Ryno said?

I've also heard some rumblings about watching TV through your XB1 degrades the picture/quality a bit. Is that true?

Kinect has nothing to do with you being able to switch between games/apps. Yes, you will start exactly where you left off.

I have yet to watch TV through X1 though.

One of the X1's best features is the TV aspect. You're providers TV guide is integrated with the One. So while watching TV you hit the Xbox or say "Xbox OneGuide" and then you get an organized layout TV guide of your stations. You can fav certain stations then just use the favourite tab to find a TV channel you want to watch. We will be able to use our X1 as a DVR to save movies/TV shows (but you have Netflix so if it's not a new episode why would you lol?) the TV quality is NOT degraded at all. HD channels are still HD. regular channels are the same quality they've always been. If you lose your TV remote you can use voice commands or the One app on your phone to navigate the X1/switch channels.

Kinect IMO just makes life easier. saying xbox off/on turns everything on so if you have some kind of entertainment set up, you're good.

Didn't mean to get into comparisons. Lol..

Sounds as though you've made your mind up already about getting XboxOne. I'm all about my Kinect personally. As everyone mentioned before, you can turn it on and off with your voice. Even switch channels by saying "Xbox watch NBC" or whatever. You can navigate Amazon Prime Instant Video if you've got that as well. "Go to my watch list', and "Watch <movie title name>". Cool feature that no one really mentioned is that if you forget and leave your TV on before bed, then you can go to sleep and if Kinect doesn't see you for a certain period of time (default is 2 hours I think) it'll shut everything down so as not to waste power. I mean everything btw, even if you have Xbox setup through a theater receiver, it recognizes your TV model and Receiver model and shuts them both down.

I love my PS4 but it sucks that I can't turn it on and off with my voice. If you are into fitness, Xbox fitness uses Kinect (you get a 1 year subscription to XboxFitness, still need to pay for live though) and the Kinect tracks and grades how well you do in fitness routines like Insanity and P90X. It makes me wish you could get the entire series through Kinect which may happen eventually. I won't try to convince you to get a PS4, but that system is mind bogglingly powerful in the graphics department. See Uncharted 4,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1Rx-Bbht5E which is completely rendered in engine. XONE is the weaker system graphically even with the extra 10% of power released from the Kinect but, a large portion of the gaming community can care less, unless they are fanboys/girls.

If you like Halo, Gears of War, Crack Down 3, Quantum Break, Ori and the Quiet Forest and or Forza + Titan Fall 1 (2 will be on PS4 I'm sure). Then get an XboxOne. If you don't love any of those exclusives then get a PS4 since multiplats will almost universally play better on it. You know COD's, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs so and so forth.

you can only have one game "'active" at a time. if you leave killer instinct and go to titanfall, then return to killer instinct, its gonna restart the game. but like they said above you can go to netflix or any other app and then return to where you were in your game.

if your even a little interested in it id recommend finding a bundle. i got the titanfall bundle so it came with the kinect and titanfall game. that's like getting the kinect for 40 bucks
