X-Rays on PS3 has noticeable slow downs, but Xbox doesn't

It's simple.

Content: PS3 version.

Stability: 360 version.

Of the little time I was able to play online with the PS3 version, the online servers seemed a lot slower. The menus and title screen also took a lot longer to load. This, combined with the slow-down during gameplay, makes the 360 version superior in terms of performance. That being said, the PS3 version gets an exclusive character, and I happen to think that the PS3 controller is a little more suited to the game. It's really personal preference.

And here I thought the X-Rays were slowed down because it was supposed to make them look cooler...

I've played the 360 version more due to the PSN situation, and I can say I've experienced several lockups when doing fatalities and online. Also, I found the framerate seemed better in the PS3's story mode cutscenes, especially in the opening part. But as someone stated above there was some artifacting, which I found strange because that would imply the cutscenes are pre-rendered. Both versions need a ton of patches, that's for sure.

The PS3 version has a mandatory installation required: when I first put the game in the system and started it, it gave me an error message because there wasn't enough free disk space for installing. I had to make up some room then try again.

I couldn't say why (technically speaking, because I didn't work on that game) but I also did notice the framerate dropping during some x-rays on my PS3 version of the game. I think it also does it during some fatalities and some characters intros/outros. (Quan Chi's winning outro seems to run at 30fps on PS3... it's slowed down, yes, but also not as smooth as it should be (I blame the portal effect). Maybe someone can try it on 360?

I think they figured it's some decent compromise until they patch it... they probably let it go like that on PS3 because it happens only outside of fights, when players have no control on a character.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the artifacts. I have a theory for what could be going on; I think the game does actually use a mixture of both prerendered and rendered sequences. I'm 99% sure the only reason the loading bar was implemented is because of the stages - they're very highly detailed, there is a lot going on, and there's no way for these things to change on the fly like that for either system. So it's possible the beginning and ending sequences use high quality FMV's to compensate for that, along with a few cutscenes inbetween.

Well, for story mode it goes like this all the way through:

- Cutscene (prerendered, skippable, 30fps):

Fighter 1: "You wanna fight me with your Red Dragon KungFu!!? You kid can't hit on a woman!"
Fighter 2: "You will pay...

Instant cut to:
- Fight intro (in-game cutscene, transitions to the fight, 60fps):

Fighter 2: ... for telling my sister she's fat!"

-- ROUND 1 - Fight! --

Player 1 wins.

- Fight outro (in-game cutscene, 60fps):

Fighter 2: "Now, who looks fat laying on the floor!"

Instant cut to:
- Cutscene (prerendered, skippable, 30fps): the story continues.

The next level / characters are loading during the prerendered cutscenes. You can only skip those once the data is all loaded.

Prerendered cutscenes are barely noticeable here on PS3 because of their high quality, but you can tell it's not as sharp as in-game and with a lower framerate.

I haven't noticed any visual glitch or black screen during the entire story mode. No pause or freeze whatsoever.

Maybe I'm over criticle of Microsoft, but I seem to be the only one who's watched high level play on Xbox. I guess there's some argument that the action was more heavy during these matches, but the topic eludes to the fact that the 360 version does not falter during xrays. This is 100% false.

Not saying my PS3 version has never had problems. It's frozen twice now since launch. Just saying if the 360 version is superior, it's deffinately not due to the framerate.

I'm so proud of everyone for not turning this into a fanboy flame war lol.

THIS.

If I had a nice capture card I'd be happy to make an HD comparison video just to point out each system's benefits. Both versions of the game have their strengths and weaknesses. If only we could find a way to combine them....

Hmmmm....

Hm... I noticed that the sound in Sub Zero's X-ray is out of sync(it was like that since the demo). Now it makes sense. :(
Also, my PS3 slows down a bit when Shang does his morph thingy.

@artofgarduno Your post is way off topic, so I'll agree with bmsirhc.

Now this is for everyone. Keep things civilized and on topic. Thanks.

I have actually noticed the lag well before the game was released (The MK9 Demo, MKvsDCU). Slightly irritating, but I've started to use the power bar more often for enhanced attacks. I rarely use X-ray moves now.

One time I performed the Acid Pool's Fatality, and it slowed the animation time by half. Only happened once though. But then again, I don't play that stage often.

Odd how in the xbox link they're performing xrays against a dummy that's just standing there...If this was supposed to disprove my point maybe you should have links with the same character in training mode on both systems. Or the same character in an actual fight on both systems. Not one fighting a motionless character and the other fighting AI.

Ya know, in the interest of fairness...

yeah, its pretty bothersome to me. Hopefully this will get fixed in a patch. I hate it especially when you fighting Shang Tsung. Online, I am just waiting for PSN to be up and running.

I noticed this too. Though the x-ray slow down doesn't bother me. The only ones that are kind of annoying are shang tsung's intro and quan chi's portal animation when he wins.
